A liberal arts college in Massachusetts has warned its students and faculty against using 'violent language'—even banning the phrase 'trigger warning' for its association with guns. Brandeis University in Waltham has created an anti-violence resource called the Prevention, Advocacy & Resource Center which provides information and advice to students and staff.(Snip) The college claims that 'picnic is often associated with lynchings of black people in the United States, during which white spectators were said to have watched while eating, referring to them as picnics or other terms involving racial slurs against black people.'
Picnic is derived from the French 'pique-nique,'

Oh, perish the use of the four-letter words
Whose meanings are never obscure;
Those Angles and Saxons, those bawdy old birds,
Were vulgar, obscene and impure
But cherish the use of the weaseling phrase
That never says quite what you mean;
You had better be known for your hypocrite ways
Than vulgar, impure and obscene.,

Picnic? Are the "triggered" by ants? This is an "education" institution? More like insane asylum.

"Rule of thumb" had nothing to do with a man beating his wife with a stick no wider than his thumb. No such law ever existed. That is just folk etymology. Old measurements by manual laborers used the width of a thumb as a guide.

Between the fear of using banned trigger words and the proper PC correct gender pronouns in order to not offend anyone, we will all be reduced to only being able to text each other using government approved emojis so as not to trigger, offend, or make anyone feel bad about themselves. All conversation or questions will be banned as that may also be triggering, and possibly even racist.

They do have a point about picnic. It is dangerous in Democratic run city’s to have a picnic with over two or three people. It is likely to be a gun battle if too many break bread together .

The graduates of liberal arts colleges have NO SKILLS other than spewing nonsense and whining.
What PRACTICAL things can they do ? Just look at many politicians, media types, etc. Most are worthless.

And they're response to our objections will be the question, "Why do you even care?" We care because you are out of your minds, and we're not going to let you hijack our langauge.

I've asked myself the same question as in #1. But, in reading alumni magazines, I find the occasional letter to the editor expressing concern/outrage over a previously-published SJW article...probably included in the letters as "proof" that all voices are heard, or maybe as a laugh.
Unless the mega-donor alums band together and pull their funding of stadiums, dorm, chairs, and other such tangibles, it won't matter what the small donors say or do. As with everything else these days, it's a rigged game. The universities don't need to concern themselves with the $50 here and there. They know the government has their back in more creative schemes than we can imagine.
It's sick.

These young know-everythings who know nothing must think the word "picnic" has something to do with the old term pickaninnies. As far as I know, picnics are lovely outdoor gatherings, intimate or large, where food is served and are enjoyed by people of all colors and cultures. These idiots look so foolish in their desperation to be offended.

I happen to know a retired prominent journalist who's an alumnus and used to be on the Board of Trustees for Brandeis. Unfortunately, he would probably be on board with all of this.

I couldn't find niggardly anywhere in the article. I guess it's now okay to use. Maybe at the picnic. Pass the lemonade please, don't be niggardly with the devilled eggs.

The article says that 'picnic' is associated with lynchings cuz people brought their picnic lunches. I never ever ever heard of that association. But by that logic, beer was surely sold at lynchings so beer should be banned too. Such a shame....I like beer.

There's no end to the wonderment of cultural Marxism. One could argue in favor of having people arrested who spread this nonsense, not unlike what Russia does with people who promote deviant sexual practices to children. Meanwhile, violent picnics are commonplace within The Community, so maybe this reflects cultural appropriation as well.
