A project to preserve endangered Tasmanian devils on a small island has backfired after the predators killed seabirds in large numbers, a conservation group says. A small number of devils were shipped to Maria Island east of Tasmania, Australia, in 2012. The move aimed to protect the mammals from a deadly facial cancer that had driven them towards extinction. The devils have recovered since, but the island project has come at a cost. The introduction of the devils to the island has had "a catastrophic impact on one or more bird species", according to BirdLife Tasmania, a local conservation organisation.

But Science! What could go wrong? At least the article didn't include the usual "due to climate change" throwaway phrase that is pasted into virtually every document in the US/

It happens like that with people as well. Cultures, not race, matter.

Hmm. Let's take a couple of minutes to do a brief thought experiment.
You put a voracious predator, so violent that it has been named a 'devil', onto an island teeming with flightless birds and other sea birds. What might the predators do? Perhaps eat ALL of the flightless, slow waddling penguins and disrupt nesting seabirds in large numbers? Is that a decent thought experiment?
And a couple of moments of thought would have clearly shown that this was ENTIRELY predictable, but only by those with an open mind and an IQ beyond 85. I wonder who actually missed these devils?
Much like re-introducing wolves to the lower 48. Our forefathers spent huge effort and much money and time eradicating these vicious predators to protect wildlife, livestock, pets and people. And yet the geniuses who live in cities and only see these animals in zoos or on propaganda TV shows decided that we needed to reintroduce wolves.
The 4 out of 5 elk in Yellowstone Park and the surrounding Teton National Forest have been eaten. And huge numbers of moose and mule deer are being wiped out, too. The elk that survive have been driven out of the mountains into the open lands. Outside of the park, they now cause lots of crop damage, not seen in a century. And livestock predation is getting to be a serious problem, and we are back to spending much time and effort trapping and shooting these damned killing machines to try to limit their harm when we had them ELIMINATED before.
Sorry, some predators being eliminated are "a good job, well done" in country where mankind has to live and use the land for livestock, agriculture and hunting. I know less about these devils, but they are just another eating machine.

Time to issue hunting licenses out there. Give them an injection of high velocity steel jacketed lead. Put a bounty on them and before you know it problem solved. Plus get a creative chef to come up with tasty recipes and boom you have a new meat market commodity.

A Tasmanian government spokesperson said the programme would "continue to evolve in line with new knowledge in science and emerging priorities".
That's bureaucrat speak for, "Okay, we screwed up, but we'll never admit it."

Even Bugs Bunny knows, "Beware of the Tasmanian Devil, a vicious, ravenous brute with powerful jaws like a steel trap. Eats aardvarks, ants, bears, boars, cats, bats, dogs, hogs, elephants, antelopes, pheasants, ferrets, giraffes, gazelles..."

Just substitute people for birds because that's what the elite does.

FTA: "They can live for more than five years in the wild, if they avoid catching cancer" How, to you catch cancer? After the little devils have eaten everything else on the island they will eat each other. Then Maria Island might be a decent tourist attraction.

Similar thing happened in NZ. An early settler arrived with rabbits and other livestock, the rabbits did what they are known for and soon both islands were being destroyed by them. So some genius brought in brush tail possums from Australia to kill the rabbits. They did and then they started killing the endangered Kiwis (which are flightless birds who nest on the ground) and also trees. Now NZ is trying desperately to rid the country of possums.

According to an old country song one could get rid of possums by painting a yellow stripe down the middle of a road…

Same thing Hawaii did importing Mongooses to deal with rats in the sugar cane fields. The problem was that the Mongoose is a daytime hunter and rats were nocturnal. Now the Mongooses feed on seabirds and their nests plus sea turtle nests and anything else they can catch during the day. Actually saw a wild one while I was playing golf on Oahu.
