A U.S. student who was studying in Russia was found dead early Saturday morning, according to Russia's Investigative Committee, NPR reported. Catherine Serou, 34, was a master’s student at Lobachevsky University in Nizhny Novgorod studying law. She was reported missing Tuesday... I hope I'm not being abducted." These messages were the last her mother heard from her.

Studying law in Russia? That's like studying law at Harvard, Yale, Columbia or UCLA.

So, she disobeys a rule taught to every five year old (or should be), and winds up dead. WTH?

I wonder how many times her mother warned her about strangers? My guess is hundreds! Sad that she didn't listen. In my early 20's, I was still doing stupid things. 34 and in a strange country? She should have known better. Sympathies to her family!

Sad for the family, but as #2 says, the young woman made that one stupid decision and it cost them all. And, #1, you nailed it. This leads us to the existential question, WHY?

I've spent some time in Nizhny, wasn't impressed much, although it was an OK place, I guess. Life is all about choices. Choosing to be a student of law in Russia is ......inexplicable, unless one is a Marxist and wants to become a better Marxist. IME in Russia, the law is even less important than it is here.

It is common in Russia to do a sort of "wild west" version of Uber. Stand at the curb, hold up an arm and when a random driver stops, you negotiate a deal on driving you to your destination. Sometimes your destination is too inconvenient for the driver (often just on an errand, and looking for a bit of extra cash, not any kind of 'official ' driver) or the price is unreasonable, he leaves and you try again. I did it many, many times, always with another American man who spoke perfect Russian. A single woman....seems pretty stupid.

Sixty Catholic Democrats in Congress have written an open “Statement of Principles” explaining why the Catholic Church should not deny Holy Communion to professed Catholics who promote abortion. The open letter was published online on June 18 to coincide with the June meeting of the U.S. bishops, who discussed, among other things, the question of “Eucharistic coherence” and conditions under which a Catholic should not present himself to receive Holy Communion.“As legislators in the U.S. House of Representatives, we work every day to advance respect for life and the dignity of every human being,” the letter states.

Newsmax released an article this week that gives voice to further distrust of America’s once-premiere law enforcement agency. The column was based on a series of questions and concerns presented by Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) regarding the still murky details around the January 6th storming of the Capitol building. Two questions lobbed at the FBI are both haunting and disheartening: “What did the FBI know? And when did they know it?” The fact that the agency responsible for investigating the lawlessness of that date is itself under scrutiny is alarming.

An ammunition shortage that began during the coronavirus pandemic and the heated 2020 election reportedly continues to plague manufacturers as Americans remain committed to stockpiling as many guns and as much ammo as possible.“It’s widely known the ammunition shortages continue. There is still a lot of interest in firearms,” Smith & Wesson CEO Mark Smith said this week to Fox Business Network. The data backs his statement. A survey conducted by the market research firm Southwick Associates in April found that, out of 1,800 ammo customers surveyed, 75 percent had already experienced out-of-stock issues this year, down by only 5 percent from the record high recorded in 2020.

When FBI agents asked for permission to rip hundreds of safe deposit boxes from the walls of a Beverly Hills business and haul them away, U.S. Magistrate Steve Kim set some strict limits on the raid. The business, U.S. Private Vaults, had been charged in a sealed indictment with conspiring to sell drugs and launder money. Its customers had not. So the FBI could seize the boxes themselves, Kim decided, but had to return what was inside to the owners.
Abbott defunds the entire Texas state legislature 23 replies

Governor Abbott threatened to defund the Texas Legislature after Texas Democrats walked out of the legislative session rather than take a vote on election reform laws. When they broke quorum and shut down the session, Abbott said that if legislators weren’t going to do their jobs, they shouldn’t be paid. Friday Abbott made good on that threat. The elections bill was a top priority for the governor during this year’s session. Texas Democrats decided to cut and run, breaking quorum, instead of voting on Senate Bill 7. They knew that the Republicans had the votes to pass the legislation – both the Texas House and the Texas Senate hold Republican majorities.
