Top Congressional Republicans took to Twitter Friday to grumble about May's 'lackluster' job numbers, holding Democratic President Joe Biden's policies responsible.
Both House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Minority Whip Steve Scalise pointed a finger at the $300-a-week unemployment benefit that conservatives believe have motivated Americans to stay home. 'Washington needs to stop paying people NOT to work,' McCarthy said, while Scalise's tweet offered, 'This is what happens when you pay people not to work.'

Yes, my favorite Friday night restaurant used to close at 10. Now they have to close at 7 due to staffing shortages. They are struggling to stay open at all, and I hear the same from several other places, and am seeing new faces in many restaurants, and new cashiers learning the registers. Several times I have heard, 'Sorry, I'm slow, I'm on my second day, and still getting used to the register' At least SOME people are working.

Illinois is insanely bad right now. There are help wanted signs everywhere, and when you talk to the business owners they all tell the same tale. No one wants to work because they are being paid not to.
Personally, I believe this was all by design. Universal Basic Income has always been the hobby horse of the far left and these COVID payments were a way to back door into UBI without actually calling it that. UBI has been an unqualified failure everywhere it has been tried, but so has socialism and that still doesn't keep these clowns from shoving it down our throats.

They are intentionally in a de-growth of the economy mode and creating dependency on government. Mission accomplished.

One thing not being discussed is it's a new hire's market. A lot of people are waiting around for the best offer. A guy in TX was offered a job for a company in CA, making CA wages, while working from home, not having to move while basically doing what he's doing at the TX company. He got a major bump in pay without moving.

Some employers are now paying the price for treating employees badly, and that includes some really big stores.

@5, While partially true, smaller companies are really pinched in the meantime. In IL as someone referenced above, I placed 12 calls to the somewhat qualified applicants for open positions I have available. 3 of the 12 have no voicemail set up, 5 have not returned calls. Of the 4 interviews I had set for today, only 1 showed up and has felony background. When people are paid to not work, they don't. In IL, they have to show they've attempted to contact , and I use that term extremely loosely, 6 employers in order to qualify for extended benefits. I waste my time on people who had no intent to show up for an interview in the first place. The fraud division says I need social security numbers and that they turned down a job in order to report them. The Dems have set up a failure system for us and meanwhile I'm working as many hours as I am old every week (60+) because people are dis-incentivized by government handouts cloaked behind the COVID baloney.

President Trump was warning about this last year. He warned about everything that is happening.
Imagine if he were in office now, how a physically healthy public would be back to work, brining the economic back to strength.

The Bible actually speaks about this subject in II Thessalonians 3:10: “ For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.”
The government now is a corrupt system that rewards those who look to it for their very existence. Democrats do not want a country filled with people who believe in the American dream and are willing to work to attain it. They want submissive Americans who see themselves beholden to the government in every aspect of their lives. They want complete control and are willing to pay people to stay home in order to achieve it. As the old song goes, you sell your soul to the company store.

The continuing unemployment benefits are a back door way of creating the $15/hour minimum wage.

Some people keep claiming that it is not an employment problem, its a wage problem. The problem with this is that is that the wages offered were just fine pre Covid. Now that they have to compete with the government free money, they aren't. The earlier $600 federal benefit plus the state benefits gave many people free income greater than they ever made in their life. Now ut is reduced to $300 federal plus state benefits which in many cases equals their working wages. The best part is the first $10,800 is tax free! Who can compete with that? Free wages, no taxes, no work. Plus not working you probably also get food stamps and government paid health insurance. Why work?

Time to stop whining... it is what it is... do the best you can... till WE can take charge again...now that obama has 4 trillion to play with... his library in chicago is being built... wonder who paid for that...now the trick is... how will he get the workmen to build it?... since the facility is smack in the middle of gang territory... what workmen will be willing to put their lives on the line for obama?...what "toll" will obama have to pay to get his trucks through the streets?... interesting concept....

In Maryland, our Governor Hogan(R sometimes) will end the $300 per week extra unemployment benefits beginning July. He wants people back to work. Of course, the plethora of commies in our state are having a fit over it. Maryland is the 24th state to opt out.

In western Colorado, it's the same story. Help Wanted signs everywhere. Biden the cheater's stay at home welfare state at work. While I would question how even a minimum wage earner could be ok with being an at-home slug, they are in fact doing just that.

And when they return to work they'll need to earn a wheelbarrow full of Biden Bucks to buy a quart of milk.

It's actually not just the high unemployment rate ... it's the other freebies too! here in NY there is literally a rent moratorium and the renter cannot be evicted!
At my small 501(c)3 we had a worker ask to be laid off --- actually begged! --- so he could collect a high unemployment check and stay home and help his wife with the kids ... while she went to work off the books for cash at another place!

I went to our local bank the other day, went through the drive-up, bad mistake. I use to get a home loan processed quicker than a simple with-draw from my savings account today.

"If you want more of something, subsidize it; we're subsidizing people not working." - Stephen Moore.
The corollary is, "if you want less of something, tax it." Like a booming economy. The dems have never learned basic economics - or they want to destroy the U.S.

One of our local family owned eateries has posted, netx to their "WE'RE HIRING!" poster, the following "We will be closed until further notice due to a lack of employee." Yep, free money beats working every time!

Let us be balanced. For all the common sense economics that Donald J implemented; for all his common sense Foreign Policy; his Achilles heel was Public Health. Donald J shut down the economy.
Democrats have been trying to do that since the '70s. Cloward/Piven. ACORN.
In opposition, Democrats were frustrated. They tried and tried, but American Exceptionalism thwarted them.
Then, inside the tent, Donald J shut down the economy at the advice of far left Science! experts. I saw my fellow citizens strap handkerchiefs to their faces, because they could not be trusted to cover their mouth when they coughed, or sneezed. They became herd animals. I saw the herd furiously wiping down grocery carts with sanitizer, to protect themselves from their apparently diseased neighbors, as they were taught to do by the Democrat News Media.
Reminder: There was an Ebola panic in 2014. The News Media was ablaze with it. Remember? The Obama Admin appointed a high placed Democrat Lawyer as 'Ebola Czar'. What? A lawyer?
It was clever. That high placed Democrat Lawyer told the Democrat News Media to stop reporting about Ebola. They did. They shut up about it. And the panic was over.
The Cares Act gave the unemployed $600 @ week over unemployment. There was never a reason to shut anything down. It was a flu. Granted, this engineered flu was easily transmitted. Hospitals were paid extra to jam tubes down peoples throats, torturing them until they died. They got extra money for doing that. Ventilators! We need more primitive technology, like Ventilators.
One more thing. Donald J told the Pharmaceutical Industry to rush through a 'vaccine', Warp Speed. Bypass the FDA! BioNTech and Moderna who had never brought any vaccine to market looked at each other, and thought, Holy Shiite. The world is our guinea pigs! We've been experimenting with gene editing, but the FDA would never approve this. Donald J just said, Warp Speed. It was his Achilles Heel, and ours.
