At about 8:30 a.m. EST on Tuesday a suspect, identified as a Navy hospital corpsman assigned to Fort Detrick Army Garrison in Maryland, shot and injured two people at a local business before he drove onto the base and was shot and killed by military personnel. Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando identified the suspect as Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet, 38, who was an active-duty U.S. Navy E4 (Petty Officer Third Class). Lando said Woldesenbet used a rifle during the shooting, but he did not identify the type of rifle or caliber used.

I retired from a Navy base a year ago. This shooting surprises me because nobody other than the MPs were allowed to carry firearms on a military base. This guy was definitely violating the rules.

Fantahun and Girma are Ethiopian names and Woldesenbet is an Iranian/Persian surname. I hope his troubled soul finds peace in the world to which he has gone.

Lando said Woldesenbet used a rifle during the shooting, but he did not identify the type of rifle or caliber used. Why is that important? Because there's still a chance that it might be...an "assault" rifle(!).

It remains unclear how many specific actions Biden is expected to take on guns, but reporting indicates the president will also seek to close the “Charleston Loophole,” which allows licensed dealers to transfer firearms to buyers before a background check is completed.
