Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg was ridiculed on social media on Friday for expressing openness to a policy that would pay for President Joe Biden’s massive infrastructure budget by taxing motorists for each mile they drive. “So, I think that shows a lot promise,” Buttigieg said regarding a mileage-based tax during an interview with CNBC. “If we believe in that so-called ‘user-pays principle,’ the idea that part of how we pay for roads is you pay based on how much you drive. The gas tax used to be the obvious way to do that; it’s not anymore.”

Mayor Pete’s ought to stick with his instincts and go back to his plan of refurbishing the rest area men’s rooms on our interstate highway system.

Why not eliminate property tax/income tax funding of public schools and go to a strict user fee?

Destroy our energy supply. Gas and everything goes up. Add more gas taxes and mileage tax. Everything goes up even higher. Not only do they want your guns they want your mode of transportation. They are idiots and I DID NOT vote for any of them but I will be screwed everyday as long as they are in office. America will be screwed. God help us somehow.

I would love taxing cars by the number of miles they have been driven if they got rid of the gas tax as it now is managed. I drive a huge SUV that gets 18 mpg, so I would probably come out ahead or break even at best. All the greenies that drive Teslas, Priuses, and the like can start paying THEIR FAIR SHARE as the Demonrats keep preaching about.

He made a mess of South Bend. This, in Commucrat eyes, is a great recommendation for a Cabinet post. This whole 'administration' is beyond a travesty.

First of all, it's not an "infrastructure bill", it's another pork bill wrapped up in being called infrastructure. Besides, gasoline and diesel is already taxed to the hilt. I'm surprised this moron isn't advocating for coin operated toilets to save water for his "woke" climate change bill.

He is right in one sense. Electric vehicles ought to be taxed for the highways they use comparable to the gasoline and diesel taxes that other motorists pay.

Pete Buttigieg would create a needlessly complex super bookkeeper make-work project that would accomplish nothing more than create a huge bureaucracy that would be less fair than exists now.
NOW: Bulk fuel distributors pay the government for the fuel they distribute to suppliers, then add the tax to the price they charge the gas stations. One 600,000 bulk delivery is covered by one payment to the government.
PROPOSED: If each car got 10 gallons, this would service 60,000 cars. If each car got 20 MPG with a distance of 10 miles, it would be 20 trips to be tracked per car or 1,200,000 trips for all of them.
If you implemented a mileage fee you would need to install infrastructure to track and collect this data. Then you would have to process, bill and verify payment of this mileage tax. Assuming the example above for the 60,000 cars is for one month, in one year this would require do this for 14,400,000 trips. Scale this up to what would be needed for all the vehicles in this country and you end up with ridiculous overhead to maintenance and salaries.
This makes as much sense as doing a usage inventory on all the paper clips the government consumes in a years time.
