A vehicle mileage tax could be on the table in talks about how to finance the White House’s expected multi-trillion-dollar infrastructure proposal, according to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Buttigieg, who spoke with CNBC’s Kayla Tausche on Friday, also contended that President Joe Biden’s forthcoming plans to rebuild the nation’s roads, bridges and waterways would lead to a net gain for the U.S. taxpayer and not a net outlay. “When you think about infrastructure, it’s a classic example of the kind of investment that has a return on that investment,” he said.(Snip) “I’m hearing a lot of appetite to make sure
And of course, the mileage tax will lots of special exemptions which will mean that we cannot possibly implement it by reading your odometer every so often.

Yes of course! All kinds of taxes except those for the rich party donors and politicians are on the table for the tax and spend party.

It's going to be a very long 4 years!
Of course, it could be longer if they manage to steal more elections which is their plan.
Someday we'll be sitting around a fire with our grandchildren telling them what it was like to live in a free country and they will think we are crazy as they adjust their mask. :(

As a basic idea, this is not necessarily a bad one. But the Devil will be in the details.

This will be required for all electric and hybrid vehicles that don’t use petroleum based fuels at all or very little. They have to make up for loss of that revenue somehow. There will also be a carbon tax on utilities for generating the extra electricity that will be required for charging those all electric vehicles. The taxing will never stop when you have know-nothings in charge.

As long as it is reasonable AND they get rid of the current fuel tax, then maybe. Some combination of vehicle weight and miles, ONLY. But we all know that the middle class will get screwed somehow.

Didn't President Trump want to do an infrastructure project, but the democrats weren't interested since they wanted to be the group who doled out the $$$ to their favored contractors?
And they didn't want to give President Trump a "win".

The current gas tax is now rolled into general revenues, I believe. A usage tax is interesting but it is a bigger burden to low income earners. How do they propose to deal with that little detail? Oh wait, I think I know, it will be another “tax credit” on the tax form. Grrrrrr....

If you drive you already pay a road tax......it's called tolls. And you pay to register your car, to have it inspected, gasoline taxes. This would allow the govt to know how far you drive, it's none of the business.

They never saw a tax they didn't like. BTW, I remember when the tax forms had a mileage table to calculate a deduction for your estimated federal tax on fuel. So now the Democrats are going full circle to turn a former deduction into a tax.

Earlier discussions had this all tracked via transponders in each car, the beauty of that being that this information would be "shared" with insurance companies, which can hike your rates according to your driving habits (minor speeding, fast starts and stops, you name it) as they see fit. Profitable, so it's good for the America Corporation. Data also can be shared with police to give you automatic tickets, and to the social credit agencies to see if you attend forbidden rallies, and to municipalities if they want to charge extra for driving at certain times of day (as when workers commute).

The law would be so complex as to be unworkable. What about Rental cars ? Scrapped cars ? Cars sold ? Cars traded in ? Leased cars ? Trucks ? Vans ? Mobile homes ? etc. and WHO will verify the mileages ? Anyone notice that the law should be named " The milage fraud law ". i can see a lot of drivers just destroying the odometer and saying it malfunctioned.

When I was 16 years old, living in Erie County, Pa, my father owned a 1954 Dodge D10 pick up truck, our only vehicle. (an odd choice, given the fact he had a wife and three children, and traded in a 1950 Buick Special on the truck.)
I was allowed to drive to the local village, but as soon as I got there, one mile from our home, I disconnected the speedometer, and drove 15 miles to Erie, rode around, drove around the big city, then drove back to the village, bought a gallon of gas, 25cents, reconnected the speedometer, drove home, Dad would check the mileage, and I was OK.
I realize modern cars record miles traveled, probably in the black box computer, but bring on the mileage tax, and gadgets will be available to cheat the government.

Didn't obama already spend many billions of our dollars to fix infrastructure? Where did all that money go? They give it all away to their friends in leftist groups, and then tell us again after a few years that we desperately need to fix our infrastructure and spend a lot more money. It won't get fixed this time, either.

I'd tell Gay Pete where to shove his transponder, but he'd probably get off on it. How about doing this only on cars with Harris-Biden or other communist bumper stickers? (Of which I saw remarkably few, given what we're to believe was a landslide victory for Boy Joey.)
