A British university is drawing fire for its plans to erect a life-sized statue of 18-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg on its Hampshire campus, according to a report. Winchester University plans to unveil the likeness of the spunky environmental activist on March 30—but has some questioning why. “What a total waste of money,” local resident Simon Dixon told the Hampshire Chronicle. “Total waste of money. I wonder whose bright idea that was.” University student Henry Osbourne wondered why he and others at the school “weren’t given a vote over who to have a statue of?”

Boris Johnson has suggested that some pubs might require customers to produce vaccine certificates, an idea that he had previously deemed unlikely. Almost 29 million people have received their first vaccine dose in Britain already in the fastest rollout in Europe, and there have been calls to open up the economy faster because of the success of the vaccination programme. Appearing before a committee of senior lawmakers, Johnson said the 'basic concept of a vaccine certification should not be totally alien to us', citing how surgeons were required to have a Hepatitis B shot. Asked whether ordinary citizens going to the pub might need one,

Author Meena Harris, the niece of Vice President Kamala Harris, walked back a tweet Monday that assumed the alleged shooter in Colorado was a White man. “The Atlanta shooting was not even a week ago. Violent white men are the greatest terrorist threat to our country,” Ms. Harris wrote. She later deleted the tweet but stopped short of apologizing, writing, “Insecure men getting defensive about this my god y’all are so f—-ing fragile.” “I deleted a previous tweet about the suspect in the Boulder shooting,” she added. “I made an assumption based on his being taken into custody alive and the fact that the majority

The MTA will continue splashing out for its $300 million-per-year subway cleaning effort into the future—even as the COVID-19 crisis that spurred the practice winds down, officials said Tuesday. Gov. Andrew Cuomo and transit officials instituted the “24/7” subway cleaning effort in the spring as ridership cratered in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic—at a cost of $250 million, MTA budget director David Keller told city council members during budget hearing. “We anticipate to spend about $300 million dollars more on an annual basis going forward,” he testified. Officials will ask FEMA to reimburse the costs,

Fully vaccinated Americans can gather with unvaccinated family members and friends without any restrictions who live under one roof, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Monday. In a clarification of its guidelines for those who have received one of the three approved vaccines, the agency said that visits should be kept to one unvaccinated household at a time amid fears of large gatherings, CNN reported.
Officials also reiterated the unvaccinated people must be at low risk for severe illness or death from COVID-19.
More and more research suggests those who are fully vaccinated are less likely to be asymptomatic and spread

Former President Barack Obama on Tuesday released a statement on the Boulder shooting saying recent killings are being driven by “disaffection, racism and misogyny”—despite Colorado officials identifying the gunman who slaughtered 10 inside a grocery store as a Syrian-born immigrant. Authorities have not alleged a motive for suspect Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, 21, but his brother told the Daily Beast he was “very anti-social” and suffered from paranoia and possible mental illness.(Snip) “It will take time to root out the disaffection, racism and misogyny that fuels so many of these senseless acts of violence. We politely pretend to live in a nation where all are held equally responsible under the law, and at the same time criminals guilty of blatant high treason are allowed to go free while also fabricating crimes against the innocent, to which they must answer. How cool is that?
