Much of Western Washington had reason to rejoice Thursday when Gov. Jay Inslee modified his COVID-19 restrictions and allowed seven counties, including Pierce, to move to Phase 2 in his revised reopening plan. (snip) Washingtonians shouldn’t lose sight of the extraordinary power that remains entrenched in the executive branch. The Legislature now has a chance to balance the scales, at least somewhat. For the next three months, Washington’s 49 senators and 98 representatives can reassert their status as a co-equal branch of government, no longer sidelined by a governor who wouldn’t call a special session as the public-health crisis dragged on last year.

Joe Biden has been president for barely two weeks and has already signed over 40 executive orders.Back in October, he said that he couldn’t govern that way because doing that would make someone a dictator. Now he is fine with it. Media analyst Joe Concha just called Biden out for this.He writes at The Hill: By his own definition, Biden is already governing like a dictator “I have this strange notion, we are a democracy … if you can’t get the votes … you can’t [legislate] by executive order unless you’re a dictator. We’re a democracy. We need consensus.”

On Tuesday, House impeachment managers released a new brief that claims former President Trump is “singularly responsible” for the mostly peaceful protests on January 6th in DC.The 80-page brief made their case against Trump, but it is filled with the usual hyperbole and mass hysteria that Democrats are so accustomed to.“President Trump endangered the very constitutional system that protects all other rights, including freedom of expression,” the brief begins. “It would be perverse to suggest that our shared commitment to free speech requires the Senate to ignore the obvious: that President Trump is singularly responsible for the violence and destruction that unfolded in our seat of government on January 6.”

A new, eyebrow-raising report suggests the White House communications team has attempted to screen questions for press secretary Jen Psaki in advance of daily briefings, as media watchdogs caution that the Biden team will have to walk a fine line given the way reporters treated President Trump's spokespeople. Spectator USA editor Amber Athey, who used to be a White House correspondent for The Daily Caller, never experienced anything resembling what Biden’s communications staff has been accused of. "The Trump administration certainly never asked me for questions in advance and I suspect there would have been universal outrage from reporters if they had done so," Athey told Fox News.

If you peruse the various polls that purported to measure voter priorities during the run-up to the recent election, you will find no mention of “structural democracy reform.” Nonetheless, that nebulous yet unnerving abstraction is the stated objective of the flagship legislation offered by the Democratic House majority in January. HR 1, the “For the People Act of 2021,” was introduced by Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) ostensibly as a response to the “rampant voter suppression” experienced by Americans in 2020. If this seems an odd claim to make about an election that produced the highest turnout since 1900, it isn’t the only problematic feature of this 800-page bill.
