Airbnb will cancel and block all reservations in the Washington metro area during inauguration week after finding Airbnb accounts for “numerous individuals who are either associated with known hate groups or otherwise involved in the criminal activity at the Capitol Building,” the platform announced Wednesday morning. The announcement cited Tuesday reports “regarding armed militias and known hate groups that are attempting to travel and disrupt the Inauguration” and warnings by the region’s leaders that visitors should refrain from traveling to the District over the next week. The company said it will refund guests and reimburse hosts for canceled bookings. Airbnb

With the coronavirus spreading rapidly and pushing hospitals to a crisis point, Los Angeles County officials are recommending further safety measures — going so far as to urge some residents to wear masks inside their homes. The concern, L.A. County's top health official says, is the danger posed to vulnerable residents when those they live with work outside the home or go out to shop or perform other essential tasks. Barbara Ferrer, the county's public health director, on Monday pleaded with the public to stay at home as much as possible. When leaving home to access essential services, she said, people

Parents whose 25-year-old daughter died from Covid-19 after her family contracted it days before they were due to be vaccinated have issued a dire warning over the 'very real threat' of the virus. Lauren Jones, from Llwynypia in the Rhondda, had complex regional pain syndrome in her foot which meant she walked with crutches, but this would not have made her more susceptible to becoming very ill with coronavirus. However, she did have high blood pressure and patients with the condition face twice the risk of dying from the disease, according to a study of 2,900 patients in China.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., wants a song about faith and resilience long revered in the Black community to become the national hymn and help toward uniting the country after centuries of racial turmoil. Clyburn, the House majority whip, plans to introduce a measure as early as this week that would make “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” known as the Black national anthem, the national hymn and give it a special place alongside the country’s anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." “To make it a national hymn, I think, would be an act of bringing the country together. It would

LOS ANGELES - As many as eight gorillas at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are presumed to have contracted COVID-19 from a human handler after one of the animals tested positive, marking the first known transmission of the virus to apes, zoo officials said on Monday. Three among the band of critically endangered western lowland gorillas at the sprawling wildlife park have shown symptoms of the respiratory virus, such as coughing, though none appears severely ill, and all are expected to fully recover, the zoo said in online statements. Laboratory analysis of a fecal sample collected last Wednesday from one

President-elect Joe Biden has grown frustrated with the team in charge of plotting his coronavirus response, amid rising concerns that his administration will fall short of its promise of 100 million vaccinations in the first 100 days, according to people familiar with the conversations. Biden has expressed criticism on multiple occasions to groups of transition officials — including one confrontation where Biden conveyed to Covid coordinator Jeff Zients and his deputy, Natalie Quillian, that their team was underperforming. The tensions have surfaced as Biden's advisers plan a dramatic scale-up of vaccinations starting Jan. 20, when the incoming team inherits a troubled

Across New York State, medical providers in recent weeks had the same story: They had been forced to throw out precious vaccine doses because of difficulties finding patients who matched precisely with the state’s strict vaccination guidelines — and the steep penalties they would face had they made a mistake. On Saturday, state health officials responded to the outcry over discarded vaccines by again abruptly loosening guidelines as coronavirus cases continued to rise. Now, medical providers can administer the vaccine to any of their employees who interact with the public if there are extra doses in a vial and no

A vandal struck a much-anticipated tiny home village for homeless people in North Portland, damaging nearly every sleeping pod in the outdoor shelter space and delaying its opening, police and county officials say. The person entered the St. Johns Village on Dec. 19 and broke out windows in 15 of the shelter’s 19 newly purchased tiny homes, causing about $8,000 damage, said Officer Melissa Newhard, a Portland Police Bureau spokeswoman. The single-occupancy pods, which are each 8-by-12 feet and feature electricity, heat systems and a built-in bed, had been placed at the North Richmond Avenue site only two days before

Several lawmakers who went into lockdown during rioting by pro-Trump demonstrators at the Capitol last week were hunkered down with a person who tested positive for the coronavirus, the House Office of the Attending Physician said Sunday. “On Wednesday January 6, many members of the House community were in protective isolation in room located in a large committee hearing space,” Brian Monahan, Congress's attending physician, said in an email to lawmakers, according to The Washington Post. “The time in this room was several hours for some and briefer for others. During this time, individuals may have been exposed to another

Benin held its annual voodoo festival Sunday without the usual grand processions after authorities of the West African country banned large gatherings because of the coronavirus pandemic. Voodoo, more often called "vodun" in the region, originated in the Kingdom of Dahomey, now Benin and neighbouring Togo. With a hierarchy of deities and tribal spirits of nature, the ancestral religion uses fetishes, magical practices and healing remedies, believed to be divine, and revered ancestors are believed to live alongside the living. The traditional processions staged in villages and cities across the country normally attract large crowds of believers as well as

President-elect Joe Biden plans to release nearly every available dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines when he takes office later this month rather than holding back millions of second doses, his transition team said Friday. The decision is meant to "ensure the Americans who need it most get it as soon as possible." (Snip) Outside of the White House, Dr. Leana Wen of George Washington University, was also apprehensive, noting that there is "an ethical consideration" since those who volunteered for the initial dose were reasonably expecting to receive the second in the proper amount of time. A historic snowstorm that blanketed most of Spain overnight and into the morning has killed at least five people, leaving thousands stranded in cars, airports and train stations. According to the Spanish newspaper El País, storm Filomena paralyzed the country’s capital Madrid, one of the worst affected areas, as an unexpectedly heavy snowfall impacted emergency services to circulate. The BBC reported that further south, the storm caused rivers to burst their banks. Road, rail and air travel were disrupted across the country. Interior Minister Fernando Grande- Marlaska, called Filomena “the most intense storm in the last 50 years.”

Her death is a tragedy but rare for her age group. A pie chart later in the story shows fewer than 100 deaths in her age group out of 17,000. Her mobility issues, high blood pressure, and apparent weight issues probably contributed to her demise.
