Hennepin County Library users will no longer be paying fines for overdue books, movies and music. The Hennepin County Board is eliminating the fees to make libraries more accessible to low-income populations, the kind of users who might stay away as fines pile up.(Snip) Hennepin is the latest in a growing number of counties and cities across the country that have stopped charging late fees. Uh, point of order. All you have to do is return the material on time or renew the material and you don't have to pay any fee. The fee is the same for everyone. You don't have to be Einstein to comprehend this. Just because you are low income doesn't mean you are stupid. So why do the do-gooders always assume you are?

The bigger problem is getting people to read a book. I can't go without one. Yet some of my friends just watch TV or youtube, et.al.
McLuhan called radio a hot medium and television a cold medium; in a nutshell because radio initiates/requires active imagination. TV doesn't.

When I lived in Gainesville, FL, there was no return date. You check it out, keep it til you finish it, then return it, no matter when.

The bane of our child-rearing days -- overdue library books. The school system carts your grade schooler into the library each week and makes your kid take out books that they're not equipped to care for.

John56 (#3) you NAILED it!
If the Leftists have their way, this will soon apply to groceries, restaurant meals, everyday store items, gasoline, cigarettes, and eventually new cars and trucks, and then houses.
If you are a 'favored' minority, and you want it, TAKE it! Don't bother to return a borrowed item, don't bother to pay for a 'taken' item.
No consequences either way.
..... as long as it's not something that belongs to the Mayor or a City Council member!

Spot the racist.
These people are not capable of borrowing, caring for and returning a book they borrowed.
Soft racism of low expectations.

How tough is it to bring back a borrowed book? It's not. This is the libs portraying a certain people as incompetent.

The cost of the Library SWAT team's ammunition for training session was more than the cost of books. God knows the librarians did their best to keep their pensions.

I once turned in an overdue book...they asked me for the fee and I said, I'm charging you rent for the space it took up, you never contracted me to return it...of course the fee and rent were equal...I walked out.

Just make all crime legal and be done with it. Empty all the prisons, convert them to housing for the homeless, reduce police forces and lay off prison security guards and all local judges for good measure. Lawyers won't like that, but ... .

People of Color can't be bothered to return library materials on time, so racist late fees are eliminated and taxes will rise accordingly.
