ROME — Pope Francis does not mince words. In his new book, “Let Us Dream: The Path to a Better Future,” to be released Dec. 1, the head of the 1.3 billion–member Roman Catholic Church lambastes those who protest the health measures aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19: “Some groups protested, refusing to keep their distance, marching against travel restrictions — as if measures that governments must impose for the good of their people constitute some kind of political assault on autonomy or personal freedom,” he writes. He goes further, and contrasts those who dig in against health measures

Newark residents were asked to stay home for 10 days citywide, beginning the day before Thanksgiving, in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus in New Jersey’s largest city. Though not enforced or mandated by executive order, Mayor Ras Baraka strongly encouraged the move due to skyrocketing cases of the virus in Newark. “We are, from Wednesday before Thanksgiving to Dec. 4, going to lock the city down,” Baraka previously said in a radio appearance on WBGO 88.3FM. “We want people to shelter in place. We only want folks to come out for essential purposes. Do not go

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued a stinging rebuke of her conservative colleagues, calling out what she perceived as hypocrisy and false equivalencies in Wednesday’s ruling against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s COVID-19 restrictions. In a 5-4 decision, the court’s conservative block of justices granted a temporary injunction requested by a Catholic Diocese and two Orthodox Jewish synagogues. By so doing, the court narrowly held that Cuomo’s regulations limiting attendance at religious services likely violated the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. It was the court’s first major decision since the staunchly conservative Justice Amy Coney Barret joined

Police received multiple reports after 1 a.m. that a group of people, all dressed in black clothing, were walking down Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard and breaking windows as they went. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is blaming the new conservative majority on the Supreme Court for a decision late Wednesday against his state's COVID-19 restrictions on churches and places of worship. In remarks to reporters on Thursday, Cuomo said he thinks the ruling “was really just an opportunity for the court to express its philosophy and politics" and that it was making a "statement" with the vote. The court's five conservatives, including Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who was confirmed just before the Nov. 3 presidential election and replaced liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, ruled against the New York measures.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown called on the state’s residents to “uninvite” people from their Thanksgiving gatherings. “This is hard, but making difficult sacrifices now will save lives,” Brown said on Twitter. “This Thanksgiving, keep it small. Uninvite them.” (Tweet) A video attached to the tweet scrolls through a list of people to “uninvite” from a Thanksgiving gathering, including “your new boyfriend,” “drunken uncle,” “argumentative aunt,” “favorite aunt,” “bragging brother,” “best friend,” “half-sister,” and “vegan niece." “This holiday, keep your gathering small,” it continued. “Limit groups. Save lives.” Brown ordered a two-week restriction limiting indoor and outdoor gatherings to six people

Sasha and Malia Obama were among the thousands of people who took to the streets this summer to protest police brutality, according to their father. Former President Barack Obama said his daughters felt "the need to participate" in the Black Lives Matter protests after the death of George Floyd this summer, in an interview with People published Tuesday about his presidential memoir, "A Promised Land." Obama said Sasha, 19, and Malia, 22, didn't join in the protests for the attention, but rather "they were very much in organizer mode" and did it of their own volition. "I didn't have to

The mayor of Denver has been branded a 'hypocrite' for jetting out of the city for Thanksgiving, just 30 minutes after he posted a message urging residents to stay home for the holiday. A spokesperson for Democrat Mayor Michael Hancock admitted Wednesday that the politician was flying to Mississippi to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter's house. 'As he has shared, the Mayor is not hosting his traditional large family dinner this year, but instead traveling alone to join his wife and daughter where the three of them will celebrate Thanksgiving at her residence instead of having them travel back to

The NFL thought it made the right move by postponing Thursday’s Pittsburgh Steelers-Baltimore Ravens game, but not everyone agreed with the league’s decision. A number of Steelers players expressed rage and frustration on Twitter on Wednesday, with one player calling the move “bulls—-.” That would be tight end Eric Ebron, who sent out his tweet before news of the game being postponed went public. Quarterback Devlin Hodges echoed Ebron’s statement. (Tweet) Ebron also noted that the Steelers were looking forward to having a long week off due to playing on Thursday, but that will no longer be the case. The

Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar underperformed in the 2020 vote compared to President-elect Joe Biden by the largest percentage in the country, according to election analysis newsletter The Cook Political Report. Omar received 64% of the vote in Minnesota's 5th District while Biden received 80% -- the largest gap in election performance between a Democratic representative and the Democratic presidential nominee in the U.S., according to Cook Political Report editor Dave Wasserman. "In fact, I'm not aware of anywhere near this severe an underperformance for any other House *candidate* in the county, let alone an incumbent," Wasserman wrote in a Wednesday tweet.

LONGMONT, Colo. — The mayor of Longmont said he wants hospitals to refuse treatment to COVID-19 patients from places not enforcing the state’s restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus. In a letter sent Tuesday, Mayor Brian Bagley directed the city manager and city attorney to prepare an ordinance that would make it illegal for any hospital or health care provider to treat a resident of a county or municipality where officials have refused to comply with Gov. Jared Polis’ emergency orders. “Longmont must protect its hospitals so as to guarantee that they will be able to provide

Meghan Markle is sharing the "grief" and "pain" she felt after having a miscarriage this year. The 39-year-old duchess of Sussex went public in an op-ed for the New York Times published Wednesday about having a miscarriage in July while pregnant with her second child with her husband, Prince Harry. In the op-ed, titled "The Losses We Share," Markle said she had a miscarriage during an ordinary morning in July. Markle was with Archie, her now-18-month-old son with Harry, when she realized something was wrong.
