At this time four years ago, the "Never Trump" movement was alive and well. Birthed in earnest by National Review in its infamous "Against Trump" issue in February 2016, Never Trump consisted of conservatives and Republicans who vowed, even if he were to become the GOP presidential standard-bearer for the general election, to never, ever support Donald Trump. (snip) . . . four years more mature and with the benefit of knowing what we now know about how Trump has governed, I will gladly fall on my sword: I was mistaken.

FTA: “ A case can be made that Trump, notwithstanding his sundry accomplishments and notwithstanding the ascendant threat from the leftist mobs now setting the nation aflame, is still unworthy of conservative support.”
You’re kidding. Right?
Can’t quite get all the way on the bus and buckle in, can you Josh.
Moron.

How much of this is, "Wow! I thought we could get rid of 'Orange Man Bad', but he's winning despite everything! May...be... it might be smart to pretend to support him, or we might get caught in the backlash.

A lot of people can't get beyond Trumps manner. Go by what he does, not what he says. What he does is really good.

Some folks just can't accept their side won.
The continuing #NeverTrump crowd isn't Republican or Democrat, it's not conservative or liberal...it's the UNIPARTY and it is all about the "green" and how best to spread it around among themselves, their families and friends, and any others who support them. The ideology is merely pretense to keep people roiled, demanding something be done, engaged in that fight so as not to recognize the larger game.
Trump is perhaps the final hurdle...after Clilnton, Bush and Obama. The path is pretty clear. Who picks up the Trump mantle in 2024?

Poster #2, the author's very next sentence after what you quoted belies your take on the meaning of that sentence "It is a markedly unpersuasive case,..."
The main point he is making there, and throughout the article, is that those loudly declared Never Trump in 2016 owe it everyone to declare where they stand in 2020.

Don't these talking heads realize we really don't care what their talking head friends think? A list of editors and opinion journalists do not impress us anymore. Our opinions are MORE important than YOURS.

A little late, Josh (and for full disclosure, I don't know who you are, never heard of you) but welcome to the right party now. I don't care who you are, you saw the right/light!
The thing that stand between the rest of the Never-Trumpers becoming Ever-Trumpers is their pride. They actually think their public opinions matter. Bill Kristol? What has he done to be famous except to be wrong. Same with the rest of them. Only CNN cares what they think--but then who cares what CNN thinks?!
MAGA!!! KAG!!! Trumps 2020 and beyond!!! Welcome to the light side, Josh and friends! You're gonna love winning!

Yes, what #6 said. Let’s not selectively quote to change the author’s meaning. Leave that to CNN, they’re the experts.

I am a forgiving person and can understand with all the lies flying around not being sure in 2016 , but it is quite clear now that You ain't conservative if you don't back President Donald Trump.

IMO, the difference between the NeverTrumpers who now have apologized and gotten on the Trump train and the insane howlers like Bill Kristol, Steve Schmidt and George Conway is that the permanent haters are either heavily invested in the Deep State corrupt swamp of thieves for their livelihood, or are too dim witted or too childish to recognize that Trump is the best President since at least Reagan, and probably will be a more effective President than Reagan was able to be. Not blaming Reagan, he had grand and wonderful ideas and plans, but he was shackled by a Demonrat Congress and a VP who was, I am now pretty certain, continuously working against him behind the scenes. Kristol and Schmidt are examples of Swamp creatures, I think Conway is just a dim, small, childish little man who cannot bear to admit his error, too stupid to even recognize that his wife is twice as smart as he is. Hard to tell which category George Will falls into, but perhaps both.
I hope a lot of intelligent folks who didn't trust the President 2016, like the author, will be now proudly voting for Trump this cycle. That should bring millions of added votes.

I am not buying it. They spent 4 years undermining the President and his attempts to do his work, and keep his promises to us. NR and all their minions have never forgiven us in 2000, or 2016 for not listening to them and voting the way they wanted. Sorry NeverTrumpers, too little too late.

PDT has snatched the pretense of being Conservative away from Never Trumpers. They will never really forgive him for exposing their intellectual dishonesty. So be it...

Re #s 6 and 9.
1) I did not want to be “selective” in choosing the phrase I did. However, there is an emphasis in the article on the word “can” (“A case CAN be made...”) I took the author at his word: he CAN make a case that Trump is unworthy of conservative support, even as he admits it is an unpersuasive argument. For the record, I would like to see him make that case.
2) To me, “anti-Trump conservatives” is an oxymoron. Specifically, how are PDJT’s policies anti-conservative?
3) The author follows other thinkers and writers who can’t seem to praise the President without a caveat (he is boorish, rude, loud etc). I am weary of the qualifiers. He is the best President in my lifetime, including Reagan. And when his term is over, America will not be the same.

#NeverTrumpers were willing to hand the country over to Hillary Clinton because they, for the most part, feared that Donald Trump was unelectable and wanted to curry favor with Hillary Clinton. They came out against him in the hopes that they would be able to feather their own nests under another Clinton Administration, knowing full well what an evil and vile Marxist Hillary Clinton was. I consider them self-serving traitors to conservatism to turn their backs at such a critical point, dooming Conservatism here forever for their personal benefit and self-aggrandizement if they'd been successful. To hell with the lot of them.

The Never Trumpers caveat that he's boorish, rude and loud doesn't hold water...that dingy sunk. The Brits said the same things about Churchill.
If Trump wasn't as vociferous and as animated who would attend hid rallies, who would the media write about and criticize nonstop. They should thank him. Besides knowing how to get the job done, President Trump is a one man show who kept his promises and the people love him. Also, he's a role model for others to follow. We have some exciting young congressmen and women and a few Senators on the horizon. the key is to increase that number this year.
Let's face it, the NT's are green with envy. Along with bringing Fake News out in the open, something else Trump has done is bring the sore losers into the foreground. It's is like a magnet. Kasich, Romney, Bolton, Kelly, Kerry, and Hillary and many other losers who can't seem to help themselves for being a loser and for being a NT. It's quite a wondrous spectacle to behold.
