A former Georgia State Patrol officer has been charged in the murder of a 60-year-old driver who was shot dead during a traffic stop over a busted tail light last Friday. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Jacob G. Thompson, 27, on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault in connection to the incident in Screven County. Thompson has been booked into the Screven County Jail and was fired from the Department of Public Safety, Georgia State Patrol, according to a release from the GBI. On August 7, Thompson attempted to stop a Nissan Sentra that Julian Lewis had been driving on Stoney Pond Road at around 9.20pm.

I'll make he same comment I did at the first stories about George Floyd.
I doubt that the facts are actually as told, and I will reserve judgement until more facts are available, and from more reliable sources than this one.

How hard would it have been to stop the car in a normal fashion, apologize to the officer, promise to have the light fixed, sign your ticket, go home and pay it. That's how civilized people play the game.
Blacks are now convinced that they can give the cops attitude over any little dumb thing and then attempt to hurt them because they did their job.

It must have been some high speed chase if a PIT maneuver was determined to be necessary. Car full of drugs? As OP says, this will be all about a broken taillight. Floyd was all about “just a (counterfeit) $20 bill” (federal crime - and I’d bet $20 bills are the most common.

The trooper has served faithfully for 7 years. Why on earth did a man with a small violation run from the traffic stop? Did he have an outstanding warrant or two? Most of us would just apologize to the officer, sign the ticket, pay the fine, and be done with it!! Who needs the drama? To risk being shot at is stupid and reckless; pay the stupid fine, learn from it, and live another day! BTW, in observing his arrest photo, the former officer looks quite competent!!

I think I'll wait too. While we would all like to believe its a railroad job, the old "broken taillight" thing is as old as it gets. Its right up there with crossing the solid yellow line on a back country road. Its what you make up when you want to stop someone but have no probable cause.
This guy is young, and young cops are often dangerous.

Books sometimes CAN be judged by their looks. Julian looks like he's had some meth over time. The teeth and skin tell the story.

I arbitrated a police officer case where the officer fired through the back window o0f a man's car, and it was undisputed that the driver fled the officer, led the officer on a high speed chase into another state, and when stuck at the end of a dead end street, backed up at a high speed.
The officer testified that he believed the driver was trying to run him over. He didn't hit the driver, but came close.
The officer was terminated, and I reinstated him with full back pay.
The driver? He was readmitted to the psychiatric hospital where he had just been discharged. He told the officer that he fled because pixies were flying around his head. (I don't understand the pixie part, but Old Jo Biden might.)
I suggest that you people might want to wait to get all of the facts before you reach a conclusion. Drivers who flee at a traffic stop usually have a reason to do so.

So we are going to fire and jail police for the crime of avoiding being killed?
What a country!
The police flag you. You stop. End of problem.
As a policeman told me many years ago: "if he runs, you got him."
Who would want to be a policeman unable to defend himself?

This story is coming from the foreign U.K. Daily Mail a very liberal to socialist newspaper. One of their favorite story lines has historically been a White Cop shooting a Black person in the USA so you have to take any Daily Mail report like that with a grain of salt. Beyond that you have to ask why the Black man did not stop his vehicle when the police officer requested that he do so? Chances are it was probably because the Black man was under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs, or a combination of both. You also have to ask why an experienced traffic oriented police officer would put himself in a position where a non compliant suspect could run him down with a motor vehicle? As other posters have said, it is best to allow this story to shake itself out in the criminal justice system.

I couldn’t disagree more. A mature police lieutenant, a former motorcycle officer and Marine veteran, told me (after the Rodney King high speed chase) that the public doesn’t understand how dangerous chases like that can be for the officer. Usually someone on something - alcohol or drugs or both - and most often wth something to hide, a reason to make a run for it.
I have known a couple nasty cops, but most in our area seem to be good people, trying to serve and protect.

You see the blue lights behind you. You pull over find out the reason for being stopped. Say you'll get your tail light fixed and go home. But no, its not that simple with blacks. There has to be a chase. Either on foot or by car. It never ends well. This guy should be alive today if he only stops the freakin car. So the cop is up on murder charges and a life is lost. Shameful.

I agree that some bored cops will pull someone over for a failed light that mysteriously come back on when you go to look. Wifey was coming home late from work and was pulled over because she was driving 'erratically' on a back road.
The big diff however, is that we STOPPED. How far do you think this guy would have gotten had he not been PITted? More cops would shortly appear to stop him or take him down
Running can be suicide..

A few interesting bits from another article: Lewis was shot in the face. That tells us that he was driving toward Officer Thompson.
The Lewis family attorney made an odd remark: ““He was not a perfect member of the Lewis family," he said, "but as his wife said, `He was too good to die the way he did.”
Code for “he had issues”?

Another interesting car chase in Atlanta:
A high-speed chase in Atlanta ended with a man in handcuffs and ounces of cocaine and heroin being seized, authorities said.
The incident began shortly before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when troopers attempted to stop a driver who was following another vehicle too closely on I-20, the Georgia State Patrol said. Instead, the vehicle’s driver is accused of speeding away onto I-285.
A pursuit ensued southbound on the interstate and ended near Cascade Road, when a trooper performed a PIT maneuver, GSP said. In footage from NewsChopper 2, a sedan was seen facing the wrong direction on the interstate next to a trooper’s patrol car.

PIT maneuver tends to spin around the car that is being chased. Anyone see what appears to be a fairly common thread re car chases? People who make a run for it? Potential for drugs? Any media mention of a trooper running a plate for owner info, warrants, etc., when they see a hinky driver?
Much we do not know….

The last paragraph of this article is pure b.s. Where is the proof? Just saying so in an article proves nothing. Things could have happened just as the officer stated, but in TodayWorld, any black person shot and killed by the police is an immediate suspect. I think we should all wait for a final resolution from local and federal investigations. Things are not always as they seem.

The narrative will be that Lewis was shot over a failed tail light. Running from the cops is just a cultural thing and the trooper didn't respect that.
