For the past three months, New Zealanders have enjoyed a ‘COVID-free’ country, with citizens hugging one another, children returning to classrooms and sport fans filling stadiums. But this changed on Tuesday, when a family of four from Auckland, the country’s biggest city, tested positive for the virus, breaking a 102 day streak without any new COVID-19 cases. As of today, 29 people have tested positive for the virus, all of which remain linked to the original four cases. Although the government says the latest outbreak appears to currently be limited to one cluster, it is taking tough actions to prohibit

They were COVID free, until they weren't. No logical explanation for the new outbreak. Good thing they don't mind a new lockdown - it was last forever.

They're learning what we learned: a lockdown merely delays the pandemic.

People (such as New Yorkers and New Jerseyites) see these COVID-free areas and flock to them, bringing the virus with them. I would guess that the dense area is around the airports.

Anyone who thinks they can create a “COVID-free” world is kidding themselves. Just let it run it’s course.

Hmmm. Yet another Western country sees a "resurgence" after having pretty much flattened if not eliminated the virus. Am I the only one who sees this pattern as just a little more than curious? By contrast, let's take a look at what is happening (or not) in the original source of this virus... China. Nothing. Zilch. Zip. Most curious indeed, even if you acknowledge that reporting from there is always suspect. Crowded. Terrible health care. Unsanitary practices galore. How the heck are they avoiding all the resurgences we are seeing now? Unless maybe they are actively re-seeding the infections globally? Like a cheap and very effective destruction of your enemies' economies? With zero retaliation probability? Food for thought. I'm not saying it's a fact. But somebody better be checking this out. China cannot be trusted.

I'm convinced people are going around and purposely spreading this virus. I can count four times someone purposely sneezed or coughed, in a public place, with customers all around. One guy was sitting in the greeter chair at Walmart and made the most ungodly sounds coughing - what I call juicy coughs. A man passing by him at the time yelled at him to stop that. I was purposely coughed on, too, and a few days later got sick. Ha, I fooled him, I lived. I've seen people strolling down store aisles sneezing into their hands or not covering at all.

Shocking video shows a bison dragging and thrashing a woman in a South Dakota state park after she reportedly got too close to a calf, as thousands have traveled to the state for an annual motorcycle rally, according to multiple reports. Footage of the Wednesday attack, captured by witness Jo Reed, shows the bison taking hold of the woman and dragging her across the street into the grass. The animal continues to violently shake and spin the woman as other bikers look on in horror, the video shows. The animal ripped off her pants before running off as onlookers describe

A protest was held outside of a New York bakery Thursday over a MAGA hat cake. Coccadotts Cake Shop in Albany put a picture on its social media of a cake baked into the shape of a red “Make American Great Again” hat. The cake was a custom-order. The cake set off a wave of backlash when it was posted in late July. Though it was quickly deleted after the negative response, protestors from the Black Lives Matter movement and those supporting the MAGA cake faced off in front of the bakery on Aug. 13. According to video footage from

It has become almost conventional wisdom that if Joseph Biden is elected President this November he will only serve one term and not seek reelection in 2024. Given Biden's age, this makes intuitive sense. At 77, he is already the oldest person ever to be a major party candidate for President. Although his doctor says he's in good health for a man his age, there is no guarantee that he will remain so for another four years, let alone eight. This reality framed Biden's decision about choosing a running mate. Because of his age, Biden needed to choose somebody who

California electrical providers instituted rolling blackouts Friday night – the first since 2001–as an intense and prolonged heat wave settled over much of the Western U.S. Hundreds of thousands of people are believed to have experienced brief power outages through the evening, after the body that manages most of the state's electrical utilities declared a Stage 3 emergency to help reduce stress on the larger grid. Electrical demand surged through the day as temperatures topped the triple digits in many parts of the state and people cranked up fans and air conditioning units to try and stay cool. The emergency order

A Georgia state representative lost his committee chairmanship after he denigrated the late John Lewis on a radio show, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Tommy Benton, 70, incorrectly said that Lewis hadn’t done anything since he was beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965. “I have never read of a significant piece of legislation that was passed with his name on it,” Benton said, according to the AJC. “John Lewis, his only claim to fame was he got conked on the head at the Pettus Bridge. And he has milked that for 50 years.” Georgia’s house speaker, fellow Republican David

California has become the first state in the nation to surpass 600,000 confirmed coronavirus cases. As of Friday morning, there were more than 603,000 recorded cases. The state also has now reported over 11,000 deaths. Yet despite the grim numbers, there is growing evidence that the surge in infections and fatalities that began when California reopened its economy in May is beginning to slow. In Los Angeles County, the effective transmission rate of the coronavirus is now about 0.86 — meaning that every one infected person passes the virus to an average of 0.86 other people. Last week, the rate was

On Monday, all of America reeled at the sight of Chicago's Magnificent Mile being pillaged by roaming bands of thieves, who seemed to move with abandon through the city's downtown. Just one week prior, news networks spread similar images of a shootout in front of high-end boutiques on Oak Street. To downtown residents like Gary Hebding, it was no surprise. Hebding said he has seen continued crime downtown in recent months. "This is never something I've seen before in the four years that I've lived here," he said. Hoping to vacation in Hawaii in September? You might have to rethink those plans. Given the state's rapidly rising COVID-19 case counts, officials are "looking at'' delaying the start of a much-anticipated program that would allow out-of-state visitors to vacation there without quarantining for 14 days by presenting a negative COVID-19 test, Hawaii Gov. David Ige said during a news conference late Thursday. The program, announced in June, is set to begin September 1. It was already delayed once, a month ago, due to rising cases on the mainland and in Hawaii. "If things do not get better we will

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris are calling for a three-month nationwide mask mandate to limit the spread of coronavirus. During a briefing by public health experts in Wilmington, Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, told reporters that all the nation's governors should require this. "Every single American should be wearing a mask when they're outside for the next three months, at a minimum. Every governor should mandate mandatory mask-wearing," Biden said, suggesting that widespread mask use could save 40,000 lives over the next three months. "Let's institute a mask mandate nationwide starting immediately, and we will

There were 55,910 reported new cases and 1,499 deaths, on Wednesday alone - the highest number of fatalities since May. “For your country right now and for the war that we’re in against COVID, I’m asking you to do four simple things: wear a mask, social distance, wash

Bill Gates this week added more flame to the fire in the ongoing debate over the usage of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19, claiming that using the drug to treat the coronavirus carries with it the risk of "severe side effects" and arguing that medical officials should instead pursue the numerous "good therapeutic drugs" currently in development. Yet there is at present little evidence that "severe side effects" are common in COVID-19 patients who take hydroxychloroquine, with the majority of reported adverse events being relatively mild and only a small fraction of reported effects so far being dangerous and/or fatal.

It is no secret but public knowledge that Kamala Harris slept her way up into California political life by being a very public escort and mattress for California Democrat Kingmaker Willie Brown. Willie Brown is 30 years older than Harris and was very married at the time. It was public. It was an embarrassment. With Joe Biden’s photo metaphorically the definition of the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, voters will decide in November whether they want Harris to be their president some time in the next four years. Of almost equally significant concern is what Harris represents to hard-working women across the country who devote years to their careers

President Trump continues to be his own worst enemy: On Thursday, he stooped to calling presumptive vice-presidential nominee Kamala Harris a “mad woman.” That doesn’t promote his agenda. It doesn’t help him with women. It doesn’t shore up his image as worthy of the nation’s highest office. It’s just, as Trump would say, mean and nasty. Sure, Harris isn’t the first target of Trump’s ad hominem attacks or over-the-top language. But making everything personal is unbecoming. It turns off voters who like his policies but dislike his rhetoric.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) broke with President Trump on Friday by saying there is no debate over whether Sen. In a pair of tweets, Graham, a frequent defender of Trump, said he disagreed with Harris on “plenty of issues,” calling her “one of the most liberal members of the U.S. Senate.” But he said there should be no debate over her citizenship status.
