Public” schools have been a catastrophe for the United States. This certainly isn’t an original assertion, but as we watch thousands of authoritarian brats tearing down the legacies of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, it’s more apparent than ever. State-run schools have undercut two fundamental conditions of a healthy tolerant society. First, they’ve created millions of civic illiterates who are disconnected from long-held communal values and national identity. Second, they’ve exacerbated the very inequalities that trigger the tearing apart of fissures.

The mainstream media doesn't want you to know what happened in New Orleans after Katrina. They rebuilt the schools, fired all the teachers, banned teachers unions and made it easy to fire newly hired teachers if they couldn't teach.
So what happened? Student test scores went up dramatically. When you protect students instead of the teachers' jobs, this is no surprise.

I was in the public education system 1950-1962. I got an excellent education. But I don't think my teachers belonged to a union.

Here's another article about public unions. Privatize it all.

"Public education" should be a safety net at best, not the primary purveyor of education. The Federal government, of course, is there to "help". Like virtually everything anymore, the system is rigged politically for the benefit of special interests. It's not just teachers unions, either. From your local Democrat/teachers union school boards right up to the UNIPARTY Congress and Dept of Education, there's too much power, money and the ability to control the "memory hole" through curricula to keep it honest. Private schools are the answer...and where are the entrepreneurs to start them? Certainly the capital is out there...

All for privatizing, but don't fall for the trap of contract private schools. They are simply agents of the same state system. The administrators and teachers will still have to toe the line in terms of diversity, credentialing, etc. otherwise the company will lose the contract. Schools need to be completely divorced from the state system.

#1, Thanks for sharing that bit of info on New Orleans public schools. I was intrigued so looked it up. Amazing - and yet - nary a peep about it in MSM to highlight this major success accomplished WITHOUT the help of a union. I'm sure they are working feverishly for a return to 'normal'.

Harsanyi is partly right. Education was not the Leftist driven institution that it is at the moment until the Hippie generation got its hands on it. I would say that when all the teachers that my generation had retired, all brakes came off regarding the slide to Leftist dogma. I had a pretty decent education in my youth, but if I had to do it over again, I would home school my two kids. I still consider that I did my part to help educate them, providing computer games that taught as well as entertained. Like the Carmen San Diego games. Teach kids how to study and think and find out information in order to play the game. They did not get Xbox or Nintendo at all.
Get rid of tenure and the unions that hide their rot behind that tenure. Let the parents clean out their school districts and we might see a massive sea change. I had hopes for DeVos as Education Secretary, but she has been worse than useless and contributed to the continuing harm of our children.

Government schools are nothing more than taxpayer-funded daycare centers and indoctrination centers for socialist/communist claptrap. They would be the envy of the former German Democratic Republic.

How many times have I posted on this forum - - that no government entity should be allowed to own, operate, or subsidize a school? Well finally - - I have an ally in David Harsanyi. Our movement has doubled in size overnight. Anyone else care to join us?
