Science and math will always be safe from the ideologues. That’s what some people thought. They were fools. Look: March for Science @MarchForScience This Wednesday, June 10th we will join the call to #ShutDownSTEM! We urge all scientists and STEM workers to stop business as usual for a day to focus on actionable plans that work towards ending anti-Black racism.#Strike4BlackLives #BlackLivesMatter #ShutDownAcademia

Comments:

No one else is writing about this, which is why this writer, and this article, is so important. Dreher provides a window into what is happening to the scientific community and academia. This is very dangerous and did not happen overnight. It happened, as Hemingway noted about going broke, gradually, then suddenly.

There is pro-black affirmative action racism, and anti-white racism all over the place. Show me some actual anti-black racism. I don't see any.

Anyone who reads science journals know that scientists are all leftists because most of their money comes as grants from governments vis their university departments.. Somehow, and someone please explain this to me, science has become a democrat endeavor with a political agenda. Until recently every article had a global warming hook. Now it's China coronavirus which they obfuscate with the name Covid-19. Scientists who spend their life in academia necessarily spend it in the socialist Frankfurt School bubble. And they are mostly dumb and are not independent thinkers. Probably a lot of them knelt down to Antifa and really believed in their culpable privilege. Like I said, dopes, and dupes.

Jesuslover54, please read the article and don't just react to the headline. There are many scientists who are afraid of what is happening in academia and the demands that are made that are anti-science. Check out shutdownstem.com or the change.org petition that is referenced in the article. These are truly frightening and no, not everyone in academia agrees that this is a good thing - but they acknowledge they must be silent or have their career destroyed by woke administrators.

This is true, Boni (poster #3) -- this is immense political pressure. I work at a major university, partially closed down because of COVID-19, but I'm in the office today, we're open. Academia is definitely part of the problem, and much like Republicans in Hollywood, normals and conservatives keep their heads down in academia .... geez, I can't believe I just compared academia to Hollywood!!!!!!

There is a devil behind this movement and it has nothing to do with justice, equality, nor right. The only thing any sane people can do is to band together and fight it no matter the cost, because the alternative is intolerable! Yield and become slaves or fight to be free!

Some 54 scientists have resigned or been fired as a result of an ongoing investigation by the National Institutes of Health into the failure of NIH grantees to disclose financial ties to foreign governments. For 93% of the 189 scientists whom NIH has investigated to date, China was the source of their undisclosed support. The new numbers come from Michael Lauer, NIH’s head of extramural research. Lauer had previously provided some information on the scope of NIH’s investigation, which had targeted 189 scientists at 87 institutions.

Gary Garrels, the longtime senior curator of painting and sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, has resigned after coming under fire for saying the museum will still collect work from white artists. Artnet.com first reported on the controversy, which stemmed from Garrels reportedly saying, "Don’t worry, we will definitely still continue to collect white artists" at the end of a meeting centered around new acquisitions from artists of color in the wake of the death of George Floyd and a renewed reckoning over race in America.

Some conservatives have begun speculating the unrest in American cities—even as late as Monday night in Washington, DC, as “protestors” unsuccessfully worked to tear down a statue of Andrew Jackson and set up an autonomous zone across the street from the White House—may in part be an attempt to affect the upcoming presidential election, with the chaos and violence intended to make it as difficult as possible for Donald Trump to win a second term. Lending credence to this idea is the fact that at least one board member of Thousand Currents...

Ross Douthat’s column today centers on the decadence that has befallen the American system of government. Excerpts: It might surprise contemporary Americans that for most of our history, what we call “culture war” debates — arguments about rights, social justice, the moral organization of society — were often settled through democratic deliberation, rather than the kind of ruling the Supreme Court just delivered on gay and transgender civil rights. Congress debated and passed laws. State legislatures did the same. Constitutional amendments were proposed, passed, ratified — and when necessary, repealed.

For decades, the Navy's leading supplier of high-strength steel for submarines provided subpar metal because one of the company's longtime employees falsified lab results — putting sailors at greater risk in the event of collisions or other impacts, federal prosecutors said in court filings Monday. The supplier, Kansas City-based Bradken Inc., paid $10.9 million as part of a deferred prosecution agreement, the Justice Department said.     Corrections*

As I have watched Confederate monuments being removed by state and local governments, and sometimes by the forceful will of the American people, the fact that 10 U.S. Army installations are named for Confederate officers has weighed on me. That number includes the Army’s largest base, one very special to many in uniform: Fort Bragg, in North Carolina.

Sometimes big political developments arrive in the country like Sandburg’s fog, on little cat feet, silent and unnoticed until they envelop the nation. The emergence of Donald Trump four years ago is an example. Though a loud and clamorous candidate, he seemed to many like a kind of political clown destined for defeat. Establishment politicians believed almost to a person that the “blue wall” of Democratic electoral dominance would hold against this guy. The Midwest would stay solid, and Hillary Clinton would win the presidency.

In composing my new book, Unmasking Obama: The Fight to Tell the True Story of a Failed Presidency, I thought hard about whether I should address the question of Barack Obama's sexuality. Two considerations persuaded me to pursue the issue. One was the no-holds-barred media treatment of the sex life, real and imagined, of Donald Trump and Brett Kavanaugh. The second was the fact that despite Obama's early feint to the center, his presidency was something of a golden age for gay America. A May 2012 Newsweek cover story, in fact, dubbed Obama "the first gay president."

Cindy McCain is going to bat for Joe Biden, lending her voice to a video set to air during Tuesday night’s Democratic National Convention programming focused on Biden’s close friendship with her late husband, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona. She’s just the latest Republican to join in the convention, after a number of notable GOP former elected officials — including former Ohio Gov. John Kasich — endorsed the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee on Monday night. It’s a continuation of a major theme that Democrats have pushed through the first night of the convention — an effort to broaden the party’s appeal to occasional Republicans and disaffected Trump voters.

Portland police declared yet another riot Tuesday night on the 83rd consecutive day of protests after a 200-strong mob of protesters torched the city's famous Multnomah Building. The group had marched to the county seat of government for the first time, smashing windows and sparking a blaze by pushing lit newspapers through the windows. One image shows the protesters had marked a window to the building with the graffiti: 'Aim here.' Demonstrations that often turn violent have racked Oregon's biggest city for more than two months following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

In a recent OpEd from The Guardian, author Larry Elliot opines on the frequency of obesity among low-income households in the U.K., and points out that the problem “in the U.S. mirrors that of the U.K.” Elliot goes on to proclaim, that, “there will be less obesity when people can afford to eat better.” The premise is that poor folks are victims of one injustice or another; in Elliot’s case, he claims they are unable to afford healthy food. This notion has been floating around for several years now, particularly as it relates to children, and is one that is frequently parroted by the left in America.
