With each day that passes, with each new grim death toll, we learn a little bit more about the nature of this ghastly virus.
This week in particular, statistics have come to light showing that obesity is emerging as one of the biggest risk factors for Covid-19.
According to data released by the NHS, being overweight raises the chances of dying in hospital from the illness by 40 per cent.(Snip) This is a very tricky piece of information for the Government to handle. Obesity is a highly politicised issue: ‘fat-shaming’ is one of the more heinous crimes against political correctness.

We see far too many obese people around - older, younger and the very young. It is a sensitive subject, and fat-shaming is mean, but it is time for personal responsibility to be employed. The younger ones roll out of Jamba Juice thinking that gazillion calorie fruity beverage is “healthy”. Then the next time they go next door to Starbucks and buy a megacup of coffee beverage loaded with whipped cream.
Someone asked if 30 lbs overweight was “obese”. Depends. Here is one definition.
Obese: Well above one's normal weight. A person has traditionally been considered to be obese if they are more than 20% over their ideal weight. ... Obesity has been more precisely defined by the National Institutes of Health (the NIH) as a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 and above. (A BMI of 30 is about 30 pounds overweight.)

Obesity increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and countless other ailments that themselves make recovery from any illness more difficult so why this comes as a surprise or is so revolutionary I have no clue. And the longer this stupid lock down goes on and gyms and outdoor exercise areas are closed, the fatter folks get. I personally want to get back to my gym and weight training. For a middle aged lady, I was feeling pretty good. I had lost 15 lbs and gained some good muscle on my program just prior to this present misery. I'm guessing that progress is toast.

I hope this is another one of those studies that is the reason de jur for dying from this virus, or this old fat man is a goner. Coffee's bad for you, then it's good for you, egs are bad for you and then they're good for you. It's how you interpret it.

Oh No! People are starting to lose their panic! We better dial it up some more!
My facebook is full of these stupid dial ups lately. As far as I'm concerned its all fake. Whatever the goal is hasn't been achieved yet because we bumpkins just aren't scared enough yet. Next will be that it targets minorities or LBGTQXYZ's.

Obesity... Let's jump on the bandwagon of righteousness. Lose weight, you slobs...take some responsibility for your miserable state because you're gonna die.
Meanwhile, we mock the "Karens" for their behavior.

Go to Walmart and all the people on their little rascals if you want to see obese. Oh, and almost all of them are wearing their masks to protect them, or us from something or other.

My guess is that this is a correlative conclusion, not causative, as so many research conclusions are. There are a lot of obese people around. I don’t doubt that they represent a significant portion of COVID-19 deaths, but I highly doubt that the obesity was the cause, other than increasing the risk factor.

Re #14, obesity wouldn’t have caused the disease, but it could have contributed to other conditions that weaken the immune system and the body’s ability to fight disease. Those who were obese would not have fared so well. Obesity is rarely a stand-alone condition.

I see way more fat people at the salad bar! Cows get fat on grass and Alfalfa. Being Anorexic lowers your immune system. Starvation is bad for your health.
Yes, people should take better care of themselves, but it's their choice to be fat. No worse than choosing drugs, alcohol, or tobacco.
It's fun to think of all the article that could be written about other people's weakness (but not you own!)

OK, yes, obesity is unhealthy, but do you want to know what is worse?
Being too skinny. Several studies have shown that being 5% below your ideal weight has more negative health effects to being 5% overweight. In fact, the negative health effects of being overweight do not equal those of being 5% below your ideal weight until you reach the point of morbid obesity.

I have gained at least 15 lbs since the start of the virus due to sitting at home and eating everything in sight!
Just this week I started cutting back on the eating and going on long hikes and walks. I plan on losing at least 20 lbs as I wasn’t in real good weight shape already. I got a relatively bad injury in December and used the rehab period as an excuse.

My entire family has tendency to gain weight easily and I have watched what I eat every day of my life since I was in my late teens. I’m 67 years old, 5’4” and 119 pounds. I put a lot of effort into staying slim and have very little sympathy for those who can’t control what and how much they put in their mouths.
Somewhere around the 1960’s people eliminated personal responsibility from their lives. Maybe one of the silver linings of CV19 is that people will regain some self control.
For what it’s worth BMI is a useless measurement. All it does is compare your height to your weight and does not take into account fat or muscle mass. Therefore, you could be a body builder who has almost no body fat and a BMI would tell you that you’re obese.

And how many will again report that they have "a gland problem" and it's not their fault.
Whatever you say, yep, sure, I agree. Not going to fight about it.

We visited family in Fla, Ga and SC this holiday season and had my niece and her husband and kids out to our cabin in February. LOTS of "hearty eating".
So far, I have managed to work off 12 lbs of the 15 or 16 or so that I need to get back to what I weighed in HS. Just a bit less food at each meal, and no or very rare deserts, and slowly, slowly it goes down.
I have had a number of friends gain weight and get diabetes, and have vowed to not get it. So far BP is normal without pills, too. I work at it. Health isn't free, isn't guaranteed.
I am reminded of this every day. I have lost one friend to cancer, and another has turned up with it during this lockdown....I wonder if I will ever see him again. He is on chemo, no visitors.....
