Quarantine Protesters Are No
Heroes of Civil Disobedience

We all deserve protection from the coronavirus, which is now our nation’s second-leading cause of death. To get it, we must cooperate and make sacrifices. Our culture has a wonderful way of taking controversial or partisan figures and weaving them into the broader story of America. When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, for example, his secretary of war, Edwin Stanton, purportedly said, “Now he belongs to the ages,” which was a way of saying that the battles Lincoln fought and the leadership he provided would stay with us and shape the nation going forward.

Heroes? No. But they are good Americans who put freedom above all else, in contrast to the cosmopolitan kollectivists like Jonah, who think we should all sacrifice everything in case it might be useful to someone on the east coast. Its just another hit piece against Americans who love America and what it stands for. Such a disappointment. To think I used to enjoy reading his columns, before 2016. He should hire in to CNN or MSNBC. He'd fit right in.

FTA: "...coronavirus , which is now our nation's second leading cause of death..." I know it is just happenstance, but it's interesting to contrast that statement with the facts in the following article to show two very different mindsets. And, the way some people mix coronavirus with everything and anything as a cause of death, I can't imagine anyone ever being able to sort out that mess.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US at over 600000 per year. Lucianne’s son starts his screed with a non-fact. Chi-Com-19 had a good spurt for three months. Anybody with the virus who happens to die is a “Covid-19” death. Now, I will read the article.

Locking down entire states is a completely different from quarantining people with an infection. When in the history of this country has this ever been done before?. Yes, people deserve to be protected from disease but not at the expense of other people's constitutional rights. That's the reason we the taxpayers pay for the CDC and other health officials. They failed. I have no problem with voluntary measures. There was noting voluntary about the lockdown. Jonah you're wrong, The protesters are heroes and the country needs more of them.

Now, I have read it. Someone makes an inapt reference to Rosa Parks, so Jonah must get up on his high-horse and defend her. Civil liberties are still Civil Liberties even if it isn’t Jim Crow that is being protested. To Jonah, protestors are stupid if their cause is not lofty enough for him. Jonah should seek treatment for his Covfefe-45 TDS infection.

Much less cancer, COPD, accidents Dementia and strokes yet. A nice 'we need to be surveil fascist peons for the greater good' article. Except this country wasn't founded on the greater good, but on individual life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The Constitution is the rules of the country, but not the reason for the country. Its about time we remember there is a difference.

Sorry, Mr. Goldberg. Comparing what Trump says today to what he said last week or month is not evidence of inconsistency when the information about covid-19 is in constant flux. Further, when you state that, "Banning Michiganders from purchasing gardening equipment and car seats for babies strikes me as heavy-handed", I have serious doubts about your credibility. Only 'heavy handed'? Coming from someone whose book on fascism I consider brilliant, I'd have to agree with other respondents here - you can no longer see the forest for the trees when it comes to Trump.

So, if government leaders pick one group to oppress that’s bad, but if they oppress the citizenry en masse, that’s good and isn’t even oppression but is merely enforcing public safety. Mr. Goldberg seems to have a confidence in ultimate power afforded to government leaders which the nation’s founders lacked.

The United States IS NOT New York. I'm in Michigan, the virus is mainly in the Detroit area. Our County has between 100-125 cases. Some Counties in Michigan have none or under a dozen, WHY should they be treated like NY or even Detroit for that matter. I think people's livelihood is more important than "maybe" catching the Wuhaun virus and surviving it. The for the most part, the media only report deaths, not survival. Its their way of unnecessarily scaring the crap out of the people to Control Them! Wake up!

For a guy who has written extensively on fascism, it's surprising he can't see some first steps toward it. It is not the government's place to order people to stay inside, or to shut down businesses. The government can set out guidelines to follow, and then people who are at risk can choose to follow those guidelines. The one-size-fits-all approach is a social-justice concept, and enforcement by police is fascistic. It really bothers me to see police gleefully arresting people for being outside on a beach, or paddle-boarding off the shore, or playing ball with their family in a park. After all, a right that you have to ask permission to use is not a right at all.

There is no way the virus is the second leading cause of death. Cancer historically is #2, with nearly 600,000 deaths a year. There is no way the virus deaths will begin to approach that number. Right now, there are 54,000 deaths and the number is declining each day. The final number for 2020 will likely be under 100,000.

"We all deserve protection from the coronavirus," This is a fairly dangerous, and apparently growing concept. No one has a "right" to a life free from risk. There is much literature to the effect that a life free from risk is no life at all. And government does not have the power to give you a risk free life, but they will use that concept to give you a liberty free life.

Add Jonah to the list of those who still have employment and a steady income, and thus have the luxury of focusing on their health rather than on how they're going to pay the mortgage and put food on their children's table. Too many of them, and you can also count Jonah with them, have lost all compassion and empathy for those who aren't as fortunate as they are. I am eternally grateful that I don't have to worry about finances, but I have total sympathy for those who must and fully support their efforts to agitate the system back into some semblance of normalcy. As for Jonah, I suggest that Miss Lucianne put her son over her knee and instill some compassion into him.

The so-called death toll from coronavirus is already being debunked State by State. The numbers were deliberately skewed to bring in more federal dollars. Our civil liberties weren’t just temporarily suspended. They were gleefully taken by Governors who were enthralled with their own power. Alas Jonah has gulped down the koolaid. Your Trump derangement syndrome has completely clouded your view on everything else in society. For a person who wrote eloquently about fascism I am dumbfounded as to your rejection of what is happening right now to the American people. Government is not supposed to prevent us from operating our businesses and therefore preventing us from pursuing life and liberty. The fate of the 2020 general election could hang on two congressional districts, one in Maine and the other tucked away in Nebraska. Maine and Nebraska are the only two states in the country that split their Electoral College votes by congressional district while also rewarding the statewide victor, giving Democrats extra opportunities to pick up votes in otherwise Republican strongholds. And with the fall fight between President Trump and Joe Biden set to be a tight battle for the White House, every vote will matter on Nov. 3.

There are several lessons we have learned from the CoViD-19 experience such as: the unreliability of predictive models; the danger of depending on foreign supply chains; over-reaction can be a deadly as under-reaction; and the need for better contingency planning. There is one lesson we have not absorbed: to get timely, affordable care, Americans need the private sector, the free market, not the government-controlled health care. When the CoViD crisis began, it was private companies, not government agencies, that quickly produced diagnostic tests, personal protective equipment, ventilators, and developed ideas for both curative medicines

One can pinpoint the exact moment when life in the United States changed, possibly forever. It was the night of March 11th, 2020 and the NBA suspended its season. At about the same time, arguably the world’s most famous actor made a shocking announcement. Within days, states would begin to issue orders restricting the number of people who could gather together. Shortly after that, they began closing schools. But it wasn’t until March 16th that governments began to shut down their states entirely. Why did they take such a draconian step? Because of the release of a bombshell report in Great Britain.

Senate Republicans flatly rejected a $3 trillion coronavirus aid package House Democrats introduced Tuesday and said they’ll wait to decide whether more legislation is necessary. “If we reach a decision, along with the administration to move to another phase, that'll be the time to interact with the Democrats,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters Tuesday.

There will be no official "Chinese collusion" in 2020. There will be plenty of collusion among the Democratic Party, the American press, and the Chinese Communist Party to prevent President Trump from winning re-election come November. It just won't be reported or turned into a news story of any kind. Journalists will not spend the next six months breathlessly screaming about the national security implications of America's most lethal geopolitical foe "waging war" on American democracy

Tom Tiffany will serve as the next representative of Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District. Tiffany, a Republican, was elected Tuesday, beating out Democrat Tricia Zunker for the seat during a special election. With 99% of the precincts reporting, Tiffany received 57% of the vote to Zunker's 43%. The results in Marathon County closely mirrored the district, with Tiffany winning almost 59% of the vote there to Zunker's 41% in the county. Tiffany is facing a quick turnaround after the election. He will be expected in Washington, D.C., starting next week to begin serving in Congress. Tiffany also faces another campaign season, too.

We need his expertise and his judgment to defeat this virus. All Americans should be thanking him. Every day.

Under fire for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, President Donald Trump, his campaign and his party are moving to lay blame for the 80,000 U.S. dead at the feet of the Communist Party of China and, by extension, its longtime General Secretary, President Xi Jinping. “There is a significant amount of evidence” that the virus originated in a Wuhan lab, said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last week. Trump himself seemed to subscribe to the charge:

Now that the Justice Department has abandoned its prosecution of Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, it’s important to remember what made the case of Lieutenant-General Michael Flynn so central to the Intelligence Community’s mutiny against Trump. As a reminder, here is what I wrote in Asia Times last November: As chief of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2012, Flynn had warned that American support for Sunni jihadists in Syria had the unintended effect of supporting the new caliphate movement, that is, ISIS. Among all the heads and former heads of the 17 agencies that make up the US intelligence community, Flynn was the only one who had objected

The Democrat appeared to be playing a political game of chicken with Republicans in Congress over the weekend during a discussion about the coronavirus pandemic with CNN’s Jake Tapper. Mr. Newsom specifically had a message for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republicans when asked about a $3 trillion relief bill being “dead on arrival.”(Snip) Mr. Newsom insisted that he was not looking for “charity” or “handouts,” but instead wanted funds commensurate for “Depression-era unemployment

The federal government has already sent a one-time check of up to $1,200 to millions of American families, but according to Mark Cuban, the stimulus is not enough to offset the economic pain of the coronavirus pandemic. The billionaire entrepreneur proposed the government issue $1,000 checks to every American household every two weeks for the next two months, with the caveat that the money must be spent within 10 days of receipt or it expires. It would cost about $500 billion, Cuban estimated. (Snip) "It's time to face the fact that PPP didn't work. Great plan, difficult execution. No one's fault. U.S. Attorney John Durham’s probe into the origins of the Russia collusion investigation is not expected to lead to a criminal investigation of either former President Barack Obama or former Vice President Joseph R. Biden, Attorney General William P. Barr said Monday. “As for President Obama and Vice President Biden, whatever their level of involvement based on what I know, I don’t expect Durham’s work will lead to a criminal investigation of either man,” Mr. Barr said. “Our concern of potential criminality is focused on others,” he continued. Mr. Barr also offered vague details into the investigation’s progress saying he has a “general

Republicans are preparing a multi-million dollar, multi-state effort to recruit volunteers to monitor voting places for fraud, a move that could bolster President Donald Trump's claims Democrats will cheat in the November election. President Trump repeatedly has complained elections are rigged: that Bernie Sanders lost the Democratic primary to Joe Biden because of it, that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in 2016 through cheating, and even last week's California special election, that Republicans won, was rigged.

The Democrat-led House Judiciary Committee told the Supreme Court it needs the grand jury materials redacted in special counsel Robert Mueller’s report to decide whether to impeach Trump over his alleged obstruction of the Russia investigation. Douglas Letter, the Democratic committee's top lawyer, filed a 33-page motion on Monday opposing a Justice Department effort that seeks to have the nation's highest court block the release of the documents. Democrats insist they need the information quickly because the House Judiciary Committee’s “impeachment investigation related to obstruction of justice pertaining to the Russia investigation is ongoing.”

An article in Nowhere Magazine several years ago explored the ways ancient cultures dispatched the elderly, a practice known as senicide. Author Justin Nobel recounted several gruesome rites that made the Inuit habit of putting Granny on an Arctic ice floe seem humane. At one point, Nobel mentioned that his own grandparents had moved “to a fancy nursing home in the suburbs of New York City.” That made me shudder. If they are honest, historians judging the American experience during the coronavirus pandemic will excoriate our barbaric failure to protect the elderly.
