Is Purell the New Gold?

Original Article

Posted By: Toledo, 3/13/2020 6:10:31 AM

Has the plague of coronavirus ushered in a new monetary age of the Purell-backed dollar? We first heard the wise crack from James Grant of the Interest Rate Observer. We’d called him for some wisdom after the Federal Reserve announced a plan to inject $1.5 trillion into the debt markets — only to see the Dow Jones index collapse by another 2,300 points. How else to redeem all these dollars? Is Purell the new gold? We don’t mean to belittle the seriousness of what is now officially declared to be a pandemic.

The world has gone stark, raving mad.

Somewhere I'm sure there are people salivating over the statistics gathered during this crisis. Statistics like how fast the grocery stores empty, which items go first. Can they create panic buying of something stupid by announcing that the stores are running out of it. Where do people go to hunker down. How fast do they move to their planned shelter. How often do they come out. How packed are the streets, businesses and highways. How fast do various segments of society break down.

There are other sources of isopropyl alcohol, and a small empty sprayer makes it into a perfect isopropyl spritzer, perfectly fine for hand sanitizing when you can't use the superior soap and water.

Gold isn't really a valid "hard reference point" like many imagine that it is. Big economic swings like this are unsettling, but if you look at the long term flow of the US stock market for about a century, it is upward at an average of 7-10% per year. Big variability lately, yes.

#6 - I've put alcohol in little spray bottles for years. It kills ants and I usually hit all the knobs in the bathroom on a regular basis. I also spray my hands a few times a day. We went shopping yesterday and the store was packed with full baskets roaming the aisles. No rush anywhere, no empty shelves, toilet paper everywhere - the only thing I couldn't find was chicken noodle soup and my favorite little frozen dinners. The media should be fined, heavily, for this manufactured crisis.

It could be spring and the reappearance of leaves on bare trees and flowers blooming, but I think it’s really because I do not watch network news or read the New York Times, The Washington Report or The Drudge Report. I live in New York City, which has been christened pandemic ground zero, but I’m still alive even though I am at high risk of dying from Covid 19. What I do watch on Sundays is Mass from my local parish’s Facebook page, and a recent homily by my parish priest was what stirred this feeling of hope.

The Democrats are taking their stand on the coronavirus crisis in an untenable position. It is like building a defensive redoubt in a valley surrounded by hills in the hands of the enemy (like the French at Dien Bien Phu in 1955, as President Eisenhower warned them). Whether this is tactical stupidity by the president’s enemies or strategic genius by the president or — more likely — a bit of both, is not clear except to insiders. Readers will recall that the Democrats charged out of the gate on the issue of taking science seriously and reacting comprehensively; the president picked up the gauntlet

It looks like the next round of congressional battles over restarting the economy will involve Federal aid to cities and states. While Speaker Pelosi and the Senate Majority leader, Mitch McConnell, battle over money for the states, Mayor de Blasio is pleading for $7.4 billion. This is by no means the first time the Big Apple has asked for a Federal bailout. The fiscal collapse of 1975 is the occasion that most commonly comes to mind. It turns out, though, just over a century ago, a now-forgotten New York crisis ended up establishing a remarkable precedent in American finance

President Trump, in his White House coronavirus task force briefing Thursday, appeared to suggest that light and disinfectants might have the potential to treat the coronavirus — prompting a number of stories condemning the comments, others seeking to defend the president and a scathing tweet from presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. The comments even prompted a statement from Reckitt Benckiser Group, the makers of Lysol, warning against improper use of disinfectant products. "As a global leader in health and hygiene products, we must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body (through injection, ingestion or any other route)," the company said

There is simply no other way to state this. Nearly everything we’ve been told about models, rates of infection, deaths, and recoveries was inaccurate. I’m not here to argue that it was malfeasance or ignorance — both are unacceptable. But the one thing that Governor Andrew Cuomo’s stunning announcement made clear on Thursday is that there are some pretty shocking — and what should be — reassuring truths. Cuomo announced that antibody testing in New York state, which only began four days previous, was already demonstrating that at minimum 13.9% of New Yorkers, had COVID-19 late stage antibodies.

CNN host Chris Cuomo recently complained about his job. "I don't like what I do," he said. It seems that Cuomo, out in public, gets some negative feedback: "I don't want some jackass, loser, fat-tire biker being able to pull over and get in my face and in my space and talk bulls--t to me. I don't want to hear it." Cuomo complained that as "a celebrity" he cannot "tell you to go to hell, to shut your mouth." Regardless of the original source, this truism describes government corruption and manipulation to perfection. Even in the face of a global pandemic and an unprecedented government-ordered economic shutdown, politicians are using their power to corrupt vital needed data regarding the Chinese coronavirus and its deadly toll on Americans. The latest escapade comes from America's "ground zero" for COVID-19 infections, New York, where the death tally just surpassed 10,000. Or did it?

In the fight between the governors and President Trump over who has the authority to re-open America, the politicians have it wrong. It’s not the politicians who have the power to re-open America, or at least the parts that are now closed. It’s individuals, families, businesses, and religious congregations. The politicians can help by eventually lifting lockdown orders and school closures. That will make it easier for individuals, families, businesses, and religious congregations to resume more normal patterns of activity without the hassle of a legal challenge.

A current global myth alleges that America under the Trump administration is not leading the world fight against the coronavirus in its accustomed role as the postwar global leader. Yet the U.S. was the first major nation to issue a travel ban on flights from China, with Donald Trump making that announcement on Jan. 31. That was a bold act. It likely saved thousands endangered by Chinese perfidy and soon became a global model. None of the ban's loud critics are today demanding it be rescinded.

While speaking Sunday morning with Fox News host Chris Wallace, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson was repeatedly peppered with questions that were typical of an anti-Trump administration, anti-conservative anchor. For instance, Wallace brought up the fatal police shooting of a black suspect in Atlanta. But why would he bring that up with someone who works for HUD, not the Department of Justice? Nevertheless, Wallace wondered whether the shooting was justified. “Was it appropriate to use deadly force against someone whose original offense was that he sleep asleep at the drive-through lane at a Wendy’s?” he asked. Carson replied that he’s not sure and made it clear

Three cities, all supremely liberal, represent an American descent into anarchy against which no one is standing. After New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he wanted to slash the police budget, the New York City Council is going about cutting $1 billion from that budget, about 16%. That will inevitably cause a reduction of police presence around the city and, with equal inevitability, result in an increase in crime. In Minneapolis, where George Floyd was killed in police custody on May 25, the city council plans to disband its police force entirely. On Friday, the city council voted to replace the police with a “community-led public safety system.”

New York– New York’s governor threatened to roll back phased reopening plans Sunday after large crowds gathered outside bars in New York City in violation of coronavirus lockdown guidelines. Andrew Cuomo said his office had received 25,000 complaints of reopening violations by businesses as New Yorkers flocked to streets to enjoy a weekend of late spring sunshine. “Lots of violations of social distancing, parties in the street, restaurants and bars ignoring laws,” he tweeted. “Enforce the law or there will be state action,” Cuomo warned local authorities. New York City, the epicenter of America’s coronavirus outbreak, is in phase one of Cuomo’s four-phase reopening plan.

It may not be a blockbuster win, but it is a win nonetheless over Democratic hopeful Joseph R. Biden. “Overall, a slim majority (51%) of likely voters thought, regardless of their political support, that President Trump would win reelection over Democratic nominee Joe Biden (43%), while 6% thought someone else would win the 2020 Presidential Election,” reports John Zogby in a new poll of 1,007 likely voters conducted June 1-2. He is one of the few pollsters who breaks down voter preference into some very distinctive demographics.
