Consumers are paying more attention to their carbon footprint and it could cost airlines billions of dollars, Citi said in a note to clients Tuesday. The firm said that "flight shaming," which it defines as "the inherent guilt that an individual feels as a result of one's aviation-related carbon footprint" is causing consumers to explore alternative modes of transportation when possible and to look for ways to offset their carbon emissions. Citi estimates that over the next five years the cost of carbon offsetting economy flights will grow to $3.8 billion per year. It will either be absorbed by the
BS It's more likely the invasive TSA and their rude employees causing the problem not anyone's carbon footprint. People figure it takes less time to drive than to stand in a lines to be screened by some nitwit who couldn't see a threatening device if it was outlined in red.

Too bad I can't 'like' more than once, regarding #1's entry...I haven't flown since before the TSA got started...I figure there are a lot of places to go, but if I can't drive, I don't...recently drove 3k to Monument Valley and back and it was great...no grope by some transgendered TSA agent, no lines, no shoehorn into a seat, no smelly bodies, no crappy food, no screaming kids...as I said, it was great...and I'd like to go to the East coast, Maine, Vermont, but I refuse to go to Noooo Yaaawk for any reason, even to drive through, since they harass honest gun owners...and I avoid Illinois as well....

oh dear. it's a mass psychosis. forget windmills and relying on the sun to warm and light the way. now a retrogression to the days when people blamed vapors and creepy wind rustling dried leaves in the trees for the plagues and pestilences.
For those the Eco True Believers, they are free to walk about, set sail on hand-made ships and ride horses or asses. While they're at it, they should emulate the Quakers, leave behind their devices and all the appurtenances of man's accumulated creative genius (good, band or uglyl).

Oh...I have no doubt that some will be flight shamed into not flying. But not to the tune of billions. Several tens of thousands perhaps.

I don't know why it would cost the airlines anything. The evironmentalist whackos fly whenever they like, thinking it is the deniers that should not fly. Then the deniers fly whenever they like, knowing for a fact that the environmentalists are dead wrong crazies.

Maybe I'll get a $250 off coupon when I fly in a few weeks. This trip will put me in elite status for international trips. Will make sure I rent eco-friendly cars at my destination cities. Saw where my limo service now offers a green-car option. I expect what they really do is still pick you up in a gasoline powered car, but buy 'carbon offsets' to ge the 'green status' - I interpret that to mean the want to take more of my 'green....cash'.

So my 50-ish son was just married at a "destination wedding" in Mexico. One of the gifts at his online registry was "$100 to offset carbon footprint for flying to our wedding". I wasn't invited.

Good. Maybe the liberal and environmental loonies will stop flying and there will be some more room on the planes. Oh, for the days when you'd find an empty seat or two near you to stretch out ...

The first poster nails it. The TSA hassle at the airport is a bigger deterrent to flying than any carbon footprint shaming nonsense. I care about carbon footprints about as much as I worry about Yeti footprints. Having to get to the airport 3 hours early in order to deal with all the government mandated nonsense enforced by a bunch of semi-literate morons keeps me in my truck when I go somewhere.

Have at it, Econuts! Flight shame each other right out of the airports! I look forward to fewer overbooked flights, faster TSA lines (even pre-TSA), less crowded airport bars. Love you guys for your nuttiness!

I can think of several better reasons NOT to fly, starting with the fact that over the years, the airlines have managed to turn flying coach into a sub-human experience. Human beings are not meant to be shoehorned into a confined space like sardines, not being able to move for hours on end with their knees in their chins and a seatback in their face.
Then there is getting to the airport in traffic, parking, endless security lines, taking off half your clothes for disrespectful TSA agents, baggage fees, weather delays...…...……..I could go on and on.
No thanks, I'm done with it.

Not just TSA. It’s also having half of your seat taken up by an obese person who should have purchased two seats. And my particular pet peeve - those who take more than 2 carry-on items with them and the gate people let them by.

You can cool believe that the rest of us will have to offset the costs at some point. I recently rented a car from Enterprise. There was a section where I could select to voluntarily pay $6 to pay to offset "my" carbon footprint. If this foolishness continues, government critter gestapos will figure out a way to make it mandatory.

There's a fixed number of carbon atoms in the world. It doesn't much matter where they are located.

The consumers mentioned must all be weak minded. The perfect Jim Jones type of follower. While their worrying about a faux carbon footprint, the elites are jetting everywhere by private jets. One rule for you; a completely different one for the elites.
