After Republicans lost in 2012, failing to retake the White House and actually losing Senate seats despite a sagging Obama-era economy, two prominent analyses were proposed. One — the Republican National Committee’s “autopsy” — said the GOP’s problem was embracing social issues too much and liberal immigration too little. The other analysis — the “Missing White Voter” thesis — was grounded in actual data. It said the problem was that the GOP of the Bush family and Mitt Romney had turned off working-class whites to the point that they disengaged.

Facts are stubborn things. President George H.W. Bush went from historically high approval ratings to appalling lows without Ross Perot's help. In February, 1991, President Bush's approval rating was 89%. By February, 1992, it had fallen to 38%. All that happened before Ross Perot entered the race. Ross Perot didn't cost Bush the presidency in 1992; George Bush lost it.

Ross Perot didn't really want to be president. He only wanted the ego trip of all that attention. When it appeared he had a real chance and was drawing real support, he panicked.

Liz Cheney. Lummis, also a former two-term state treasurer, was first elected to the House in 2008 and retired after the 2016 election. She was the only woman to serve in the conservative House Freedom Caucus when the group first formed in 2015.

The rhetorical battle between President Donald Trump and Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell is nothing if not amusing. But beneath the political theater is a darker reality: the longer-term drift of America’s economics from the old world prudence of the 19th century to the silly socialism of the 21st. The battle between democratic free markets and state socialism has deep roots stretching back more than a century to World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Risch (R-Idaho) is navigating a political tightrope as he tries to craft legislation on Saudi Arabia despite deep divisions between the Trump administration and Congress. Risch has been locked in negotiations with Democrats and the administration over the parameters of the bill, which is being discussed against a backdrop of congressional animosity with the Saudis following the country’s bloody intervention in Yemen’s civil war and its involvement in the killing of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi.

Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao’s personal connections are raising concerns on Capitol Hill and beyond amid recent reports of various conflicts of interest. Recent reports found that the Trump cabinet member created a “special path” for projects favored by Senate Majority Leader and husband Mitch McConnell for his home state of Kentucky; she retained shares in a construction-materials company for more than a year after promising to relinquish them; and she has “extraordinary proximity to power in China” given her family’s American shipping company is largely based in China.

If Hillary Rodham Clinton insists she’s not running for president in 2020, why is she running… all over the place? Well, for one thing, Her Heinous has always believed in the value of high visibility as a means of enhancing her political chances When she’s out of sight it’s almost like she’s out of her mind. To that self-serving purpose, she and Bill arranged a cross-country tour of joint speaking engagements that began last year. It was to be a means of keeping their power-presumptive connubial image front and fresh in the public eye, but flopped almost from the start.

Illinois has eliminated protections for unborn human beings, even late in pregnancy, and mandated insurance coverage of abortion. Some of the officials who voted for the law are Catholics, and Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield has argued that they should not receive communion. Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago agrees with Paprocki that the law is gravely unjust: “It says that human life is cheap,” he told the Catholic News Agency. But he disagrees about communion.

I suppose I should be thrilled that the U.S. Women's soccer team won its second world title but I confess to rooting for all their opponents during the games. I don't particularly care for soccer anyway but it was the purple-haired star player Megan Rapinoe who turned me off by spouting her disdain for any White House visit before she was even asked. Did she do that for publicity or was her Trump derangement too deeply entrenched? Stomping on the American flag even accidentally during the World Cup celebration was more proof of her unworthiness to represent our great country.

Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY), a member of the party’s leadership team under Pelosi, in last year’s primary race. The latest spat began on Saturday, when columnist Maureen Dowd of the New York Times reported that Pelosi had disparaged AOC and her allies on the left (original links):
