U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, an Obama appointee, has blocked the Trump administration’s steps toward banning the purchase of soda with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, more commonly known as food stamps. (snip) A USDA spokesperson told the Hill that “the idea that taxpayer funds should not be used to purchase junk food should not be controversial.” “USDA will not be backing down from the fight to Make America Healthy Again, including for families and communities reliant on SNAP,” the spokesperson continued.

Tell me what if any nutritional value carbonated beverages have. From the Coca Cola website Calories240 % Daily Value* Nutritional Composition Total Fat 0g0% Sodium 75mg3% Total Carbohydrate 65g24% Total Sugars 65g- Includes Added Sugars 65g130% Protein 0g So a 20 oz bottle has 130% of the daily recommended sugar. No wonder obesity is rampant among those who rely on taxpayers to feed their large backsides. Next up for the Dems is to start pushing GLP-1s for all the obese people they created making it a twofer. That way the get money from soda and pharma companies to their reelection coffers.

# 3 - everyone who drinks them knows whats in there. I've been drinking diet drinks since they first showed up on the shelf. I'm 78 now and still getting around. For me, tho, there is a digestive issue and the carbonation is what I need or I'll feel too full and slightly nauseous with water. I'll keep drinking them til I die but I doubt it will be a death due to diet drinks. As for buying them with food stamps, no, I don't go along with that.

Because every welfare Queen living in government subsidized housing deserves to drink grape soda while eating Doritos while sitting on the doorsteps while waiting for the welfare check to come in the mail to take care of the seven kids from different absentee fathers. I'm sure that right is enshrined somewhere in the US Constitution and was exactly what the US Congress intended when they created the food stamp/SNAP program. After all, Grape is a fruit and Doritos is made of corn which is a grain. Two food groups are represented so they must be nutritious!

I'll have to confess. I love Cheetos, ice cream and Snickers bars but I am not using taxpayer to buy them. i also limit myself and my BMI is exactly where it should be. The food stamp recipients also buy liquor. They but a bunch of food on their card, turn around, give it back to the crooked merchant and swap it for booze.

Let's scrap food stamps and SNAP all together. Provide actual foodstuffs, via physical distribution centers, to those on the dole. Only include items that avoid the trap of junk foods. Canned goods, breadstuffs, grains and grain products (flour, cereals, etc), pasta, frozen meats, spices, and so forth. Take the guesswork out of it. Lots of holes in this plan, I know, but nothing that can't be solved with a bit of ingenuity and hard work.

Judge has a point. She is just ruling on a law that did not state the definition of "food". She is not saying that welfare recipients have a right to junk food. Congress should give the USDA the power to define what food is eligible.

The proposed rule seeks to create lists of citizens in each state to help determine who is eligible to vote and calls on the Postal Service not to distribute mail ballots to those not on state lists.
