President Trump is replacing his Secretary of the Navy as the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues as a key chokepoint in the war against Iran.
John Phelan is leaving, effective immediately, and Undersecretary Hung Cao will become Acting Secretary of the Navy, the Pentagon said Wednesday in a surprise announcement. No reason was given for his departure.
“Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan is departing the administration, effective immediately,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced. “We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Probably Mr. Phelan wasn't getting with the program.

SecNav is not on the operational chain of command and therefore not directly involved with any decision making going on. My guess us that he voiced concern over his area of responsibility - the pace of operations (the Gerald Ford battle group has been deployed since last June) and the impact the buildup is having on readiness in the Pacific and elsewhere. "You're fired."

Hung Cao is a great choice to replace him. He is a man of strong faith and a true patriot. I hope he gets the job permanently.

A quick look at Hung Cao impresses, a lot. A Vietnamese refugee, he enlisted in USN as a seaman recruit (dead bottom) and then went to USNaval Academy (not doubt via Bainbridge) and eventually retired as a Captain, with EOD and diving as expertise. THAT is impressive. And he's been on the roll since.
He's going to be one hell of a SecNav, I predict.

I believe Hung Cao spoke at the last Republican National Convention. He was a candidate at the time and was very impressive.

After my congressional district (10th) here in Virginia was re-drawn a few years ago, Hung Cao ran to be the R nominee. He won the nomination for the redrawn district (bringing in parts of Loudoun County - very lefty Dems) and lost to Jennifer Wexton. He then ran against Tom Kaine (another Catholic lefty) and lost that Senate race.
Although the SECNAV doesn't get into all the operational stuff generally, I think Hung Cao, with his background might be an additional force multiplier with the current events in Iran.
BTW - unlike the current mass of "migrants" and "asylum speakers", Hung greatly appreciates the opportunities this country gave him and his family and loves the USA.

Don't cry for Mr. Phelan, (pronounced like, "felon?" /s) who became a "political fundraiser" of sorts. He "married up" to a former Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader, and lives in a $38M Colorado estate that houses his private art collection, including works by Andy Warhol and William de Koenig. It's unlikely that Mr. Phelan (pronounced like, "fail'n?" /s) will be left "teary-eyed" for long over this gig sail'n away.
My suspicion is that Mr. Phelan (pronounced like, "fallus?" /s) was persistently going around SoW Hegseth's, back and direct to his buddy, the POTUS, whenever he wanted, which, for a subordinate, really ain't cool. Mr. Phelan, was pitching a "Trump-class Battleship" which sounds like an appeal to POTUS' ego, but went contrary to SoW Hegseth's desire for a Navy of "no crew" Surface Ships.
Knowing how the Naval Admiralty works, promotions are made by commanding ever-larger "crewed ships." Hence, by commanding "More Enlisted = More Officers," whereupon, "More Officers = My Next Promotion!" This is a millennial-long way of thinking, and the wrong direction for a 21st century military. Mr. Hegseth probably needs to relieve 2/3rds of the "Field Grade" Officers in the Pentagon, while making the remainder aware that they too are, "on notice."

Ya' all oughta do due dili...whatever... and find out that the brouhaha was basically over who was going to build our new warships, at what pace, at what cost. Hegseth wanted ships to be built in American shipyards (which had become slow and expensive) versus Phelan's push to farm out the procurement to foreign shipyards who could "do the job" cheaper and faster. America-first jobs at a slower and more expensive pace versus the faster/cheaper done is a place like Korea, etc. It boiled down to: ya want you fleet quicker and cheaper or can you settle for slower and more expensive if home-grown? But wait! There's more! The Hanwha Group (South Korean) recently bought the Philly Shipyard and is busy getting the operations there up to better speed - keeping the workforce American while instituting tech and management improvements.

Thank you, #9. I suspected that shipbuilding was a key issue. There are serious, long term problems with massive shortage of ship building and repair capability in the USA.

The shortage of shipbuilding capability - - is the direct result of electing three presidents who never had a job - - Master B. Clinton - - Little 0bie - - and Despicable Joe.
Surprised?
