Ten House Republicans joined Democrats on Thursday evening to keep roughly 350,000 Haitian nationals in the United States on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) despite the Trump administration seeking to end the quasi-amnesty. The House passed the measure, led by Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Laura Gillen (D-NY), after advancing the bill through a discharge petition maneuver, with help from half a dozen Republicans. The gunman accused of shooting eight young children dead in Shreveport, Louisiana on Sunday morning has been identified as Shamar Elkins.
Elkins, 31, opened fire at a home in Shreveport during a domestic disturbance, former Caddo Parish Constable Patrick Young told the Daily Mail.
The suspect, who was fatally shot by police during a vehicle chase, is accused of killing eight children, with the youngest being just 18 months old, the Shreveport Police Department said.
He was believed to be the father of some of the victims, police told KSLA.
A total of 10 people were shot, with two women surviving the deadly rampage.
