Thursday on CNN’s “The Situation Room,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) said War Secretary Pete Hegseth should resign over a deadly strike on a girls’ elementary school in Iran.
Host Wolf Blitzer said, “I want to also turn while I have you, Senator, to that devastating bombing of a girls school in southern Iran. According to an ongoing military investigation, the U.S. was responsible and outdated information could be to blame. You’re a member of the Intelligence Committee. You’re briefed on all of this. What information are you receiving about this?”
Gillibrand said, “Well, I have very deep concerns about how this site was targeted. Obviously it was next to naval operations

Washington — An American military aerial refueling tanker that was involved in the U.S. military operation in Iran crashed in Western Iraq on Thursday, according to multiple U.S. officials who spoke to CBS News.
Recovery efforts are underway in the area where a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker crashed. The status of the crew is unknown at this time. A second Stratotanker was damaged but landed safely.
The first plane went down near Turaibil, which is along the Iraqi-Jordanian border, an Iraqi intelligence source told CBS News.

A USAF KC-135 refuelling jet has crashed in Iraq after an “incident” with a second aircraft during Operation Epic Fury, U.S. Central Command has said.
“Rescue efforts are ongoing” after a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker was lost in an incident during Operation Epic Fury. The tanker, which uses a probe or drogue to transfer aviation fuel to other military aircraft to increase their flight time beyond what fuel they can carry aboard, was “involved” in an unspecific second aircraft in the “incident”, CENTCOM said.
The venerable tanker was a “loss” and “went down in Western Iraq” while the second aircraft was able to land safely, they said.

I'm not an optimist, per se. But when it comes to America, I'm an upbeat patriot. I believe wholeheartedly in Americans, the greatness of this country and the strength of our democratic republic – especially when it comes to elections.
But I might be alone in this. According to a March NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll, Americans' confidence in fair elections has actually dropped: 34% of Americans have little or no confidence in their elections, up from 24% since 2024. This is why it's so disappointing to see Congress fail over and over to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, also known as the SAVE Act or the SAVE America Act.

Battered and unseaworthy, HMS Middleton was dragged by tugs into Portsmouth naval base on Sunday. The Hunt class mine countermeasures vessel (MCMV) returned to the home of the Royal Navy on March 8 after being brought back from the Gulf by a heavy-lift ship. The ignominious piggy-back was cheaper than letting the more than 40-year-old ship make the 6,200-mile journey back from Bahrain under her own power and freed her crew to join other ships. For most people, climate policy still sounds like something debated at environmental conferences or negotiated in international treaties. But increasingly, it is being implemented somewhere else entirely.
Instead of being decided openly through legislation, many of the most consequential climate policies are now emerging through financial regulation and banking rules that few citizens ever see or vote on.
A quiet shift has been taking place over the past fifteen years. Increasingly, climate policy is not being implemented through laws that voters can see and debate. Instead, it is being embedded into the plumbing of the financial system itself.

For decades, the United States poured billions into Lebanon, hoping to build a sovereign and stable ally in the Middle East. American aid was meant to strengthen the state, empower its army, and ensure that no weapons existed outside government control. Washington believed that with enough financial support, training, and diplomatic backing, Lebanon could become a functioning democracy and a reliable partner.
By 2025, the latest version of this experiment was underway. Former army chief Joseph Aoun, widely viewed as aligned with the United States, was elected president. Nawaf Salam, a respected former judge of the International Court of Justice, became prime minister.

That’s more than the President of the United States makes in a year. Other figures were also pulling in huge six-figure salaries and the number of employees has ballooned to more than 300 people.

On Monday, after hosting the historic first Shield of the Americas Summit in Doral, Fla., Donald Trump stopped by a Venezuelan restaurant, El Arepazo, on his way to the airport to fly back to Washington, D.C. He was greeted with cheers and applause and chants of "Trump!" and "USA!" The crowd loved him, as they often do during these types of appearances, but this one was, potentially, a bit more meaningful. Sometimes referred to as "Dorazuela," the city of Doral has one of the largest Venezuelan diaspora communities in the United States. The president owns a hotel here —

President Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that the Iranian regime bears some responsibility for the terrorist suicide bombing of the USS Cole in 2000. The president has gotten pushback from some in the press, but a federal judge has repeatedly agreed with him.
In an oft-forgotten terror attack, al-Qaeda terrorists bombed the U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Cole in October 2000 — less than a year before 9/11 — killing 17 U.S. sailors and wounding dozens more. Abd al Rahim Hussayn Muhammad al Nashiri was a top associate of Osama bin Laden and the alleged mastermind of the attack against the U.S. naval ship —

Now that the Virginia General Assembly has passed what it calls “assault weapon ban” legislation, all that’s needed is for Gov. Abigail Spanberger to sign it into law, which is all but a given. Once signed, Senate Bill 749 will likely take effect as soon as July 1, 2026. The law will ban the sale, import, manufacture, purchase, and transfer of what it describes as “assault firearms,” and it will treat high-capacity magazines that can hold 15 rounds or more in the same way. It will make any violations of the law a “Class 1 misdemeanor,” which could mean up to a year in jail and a $2,500

Former first lady Jill Biden announced she will publish a memoir this summer about her time in the White House, including reflections on the end of her husband Joe Biden’s presidency and his decision not to seek re-election.
In a video posted to Instagram, Biden stated:
I entered the role of first lady in a unique time in our nation’s history, in the midst of a pandemic and the shadow of an insurrection. Those days tested all of us—our resilience, our compassion, and our belief in one another—but we persevered. Serving in the historic East Wing was the honor of my life.

A dark money group of left-wing environmental activists has been quietly "training" judges overseeing climate-related lawsuits, hosting them at multi-day, all-expenses-paid seminars in locales like Napa Valley and Palm Beach. Judges who attend these luxury retreats—where they are subject to indoctrination—are not required to report them in ethics disclosures.
At the "Judicial Leaders in Climate Science" seminars, representatives of the activist group, the Climate Judiciary Project, present to the judges contested claims on climate and other environmental issues as settled, scientific fact. Judges who attend the seminars are also expected to make a year-long commitment to participate in CJP events, take online classes, and, perhaps most importantly, help identify and recruit

Rep. Kevin Kiley's, Calif., departure from the GOP this week has further narrowed the party's majority in the lower chamber and has him thinking that some lawmakers may follow his lead and create an independent block in Congress, or even a third party.
Kiley formally left the GOP this week and became an independent, though he continues to caucus with the GOP. He previously announced his intent to seek reelection as an independent instead of as a Republican. The move followed California Democrats redrawing his congressional district to heavily favor their party.

The former FBI agent who ran the bureau’s warrantless spying program said this week that he personally witnessed the director and other senior officials recruiting agents based on political leanings, not qualifications, during Director James Comey’s tenure.
Bassem Youssef, a retired special agent who ran the FBI’s Communications Analysis Unit from late 2004 until his retirement in late 2014, also says he warned senior officials about the potential for civil liberties abuses in the surveillance program that he oversaw, but said neither Comey nor the White House took his warnings seriously.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., says putting the SAVE America Act on the Senate floor for a “one-and-done” vote, as seemingly suggested by Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., would be a “disastrous” failure.
“We ignore our base at our own peril, and we don’t want to dispirit our base,” Johnson said. “And right now, that’s kind of the path we’re going on.”
After an enormous amount of pressure from the Republican base and the White House, Thune announced this week that he plans to bring the SAVE America Act up for a floor vote. The legislation would require voter ID and proof of American citizenship to register to vote.

Iran could use drones to make a deadly strike on California at any time, a top US Army expert says — and we’re nowhere near ready for what could happen.
Iranian forces have the technology, the ability and the motivation to launch withering drone attacks on targets in California, according to Brett Velicovich, a former US Army intelligence and special operations soldier who spent years using drones to hunt and kill the leaders of ISIS and other terrorist groups.
Velicovich said America’s enemy is almost certainly trying to launch an attack on Californian shores with the use of drones. The FBI’s warning to local law enforcement,

The Trump administration has been involved in a months long fight with the University of Pennsylvania. It began when the Trump EEOC asked the university for a list of employees who had experienced anti-Semitism on campus. The school refused and the Trump administration sued to get the information last November.
The administration sued the university on Tuesday, arguing that the Ivy League institution has “refused to comply” with a subpoena from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which is investigating antisemitism on the Philadelphia campus.
The subpoena seeks contact information for employees who have filed complaints about discrimination based on Jewish faith,

And by "shocking," I mean in a good way. It's been so long since we've seen real journalism and the actual speaking of truth to power that it's almost difficult to process.
BBC presenter Laura Kuenssberg sat down with Iran's ambassador to the UK to discuss the war as well as what preceded it, as Ali Mousavi learned to his surprise and displeasure. Kuenssberg started off by noting that "your country is under attack," but almost immediately pressed Mousavi to explain the massacre of civilian protesters. Mousavi seemed initially stunned by the question, attempted to deflect the blame

Will a payroll crisis impact the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the middle of a war and a currency collapse? Either the US or Israel has decided to find out.
Earlier today, one or both of the forces targeted the data center that serves the IRGC's bank. The strike came after Iran threatened banking centers in neighboring states, but it's not clear whether this strike is a direct response to that threat. The hit on the Bank Sepah data center will disrupt payrolls for the rank and file, who may not be terribly inclined to fight much longer anyway: The data center of Iran's state-run Bank Sepah was hit

Huge gas lines have been reported in China this week, and Hong Kong residents are joining the logjams by rushing across the border to fill their tanks, as the threat looms of price increases or shortages from the Iran war. The gas-hungry drivers were not overreacting based on mere rumors, as the Chinese government officially announced major price increases for fuel would take effect on Tuesday. Beijing sets floors and ceilings for gas prices, and on Tuesday it raised the ceiling for retail gasoline prices by a little over $100 per metric ton, the highest increase in four years.
China has rules about selling off existing retail inventories of gasoline before
