A couple of weeks ago, I had a creeping worry that I couldn’t quite place. I don’t typically have anxiety, but something was really bothering me.
I tried to pinpoint it. I ruled out anything to do with health, family, or work. (Snip) Finally, I realized what I was concerned about — Percy. Oh, he’s fine. He’s "fit as a butcher’s dog," as my husband Peter says. (Snip) Which is one of the best things about National Dog Day — a reminder of how special these pets are to us and how we must live in the present with them. They’re not worried about tomorrow.

The saddest part about pets is that they don't live long enough. That said, most of our cats have made it to late teens, and some dogs, middle teens.

My 16 year old Beatie Boy passed away in his sleep last week = his last act of kindness, sparing me the difficult decision. He had made so many friends in the neighborhood sp I have been showered with sympathy. It is awfully strange to not have him around.

Condolences, #3.
I can sit in a corner, heaving and rocking thinking about my first pit bull.
The one I have now is a 14-yr old boy in a 1-yr old pit body. He’s a good dog, but not yet great.
I love dogs.

So very sad to hear, #3. My heart aches for you.
Everyone who has had a loving pet as part of the family understands the special place they fill in our hearts and the grief that comes with losing them. Thankfully, they leave us a lifetime of cherished memories that are special blessings, and somehow the sadness at not havIng them nearly long enough, as #1 mentioned, is in itself a loving tribute to their memory.

#3, I know the sting of that horrible loss...many times over. The gaping hole they leave is palpable...and never truly heals. But if you're a dog (or cat) person, there is no better way to live than with those precious companions in our home. I wish you a quiet path through your loss, and may the countless memories bring a bit of peace.

We have just had to say good-bye to our sweet, lovely German Shepherd, too soon, and shockingly suddenly.
She was our fifth. Each dearly loved canine companion takes a little piece of us when they die.
"'Tis sweet to hear the
watch-dog's honest bark
Bay deep-mouth'd welcome
as we draw near home.
'Tis sweet to know
there is an eye will mark
Our coming and look brighter when we come."

Thank you, Dana and LDotters, a touchingly tender thread.
And a quick reminder from my Beloved Pastor here in Cupertino who has a golden retriever, ‘Murphy.’
When I asked him, ‘Since Revelation tells us there will be white horses in Heaven, might there also be dogs?’
He said, ‘Scripture is not clear on that, but I know mine will be, Dear Murphy!’
And as a Dear Sister’s husband in Virginia reminds us, “‘Dog’ spelled backwards is ‘God,’”
For Your glory, Lord.

I agree with all Dana said, and could never imagine my life without my dogs. The love and the loyalty they have given me and my husband is immeasurable, All of ours have been rescues, but I think it is us who was rescued by them and they are blessings from the Lord to be our family. Bless all who have posted here, each of your stories touches the heart!

#3 So sorry for the loss of yout very special pet, Beatie Boy.
As a dog lover, and in my 80's now, it doesn't get any easier to lose my pet, like the others have posted, each take a piece of your heart. Hopefully, they take any coldness or selfishness with them so that the next pet can fill your heart with love and kindness.
My husband and I now have our 9th Cocker Spanie puppy , a red one named Spark" who lives up to his name; a spark of joy, a spark of light, a spark of happiness.
My husband wanted to know why I wanted a red cocker, since we have only had black ones before.
I told him that our eye sight is not great at night and we would trip over a black dog, but hopefully we could see the red. He agreed..
I thank the Lord for creating these very special animals to give us love and comfort in these uncertain times.
