John Cornyn, who announced Thursday that the federal government has agreed to assist Texas law enforcement in locating the absent legislators. “I am proud to announce that Director Kash Patel has approved my request for the FBI to assist state and local law enforcement in locating runaway Texas House Democrats,” Sen. A gunman is dead after opening fire at Georgia’s Emory University Friday afternoon, spraying bullets at a police cruiser and a nearby CDC headquarters building – leaving one officer injured, according to police and photos.
The suspect died after the frightening shooting that prompted students to shelter in place on the last day of the summer term, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
“There is no ongoing threat to the Emory Campus or the surrounding neighborhood,” police said in an updated alert on X around 6:45 p.m. “The incident involved a single shooter, who is now deceased. One law enforcement officer was injured in the course of the response.”
Famed NASA astronaut Jim Lovell, who commanded the harrowing Apollo 13 mission that was forced to abandon a lunar landing attempt in 1970, has died. He was 97.
Lovell died on August 7 in Lake Forest, Illinois, according to a NASA news release. The cause of death was not immediately clear.
Lovell’s family requested privacy but said it was “saddened to announce the passing of our beloved father, USN Captain James A. ‘Jim’ Lovell, a Navy pilot and officer, astronaut, leader, and space explorer,” in a statement.

An Australian state has asked citizens to surrender machetes at disposal bins ahead of a statewide ban on the weapons aimed at combating knife crime.
Australia’s state of Victoria on Thursday announced that more than 40 machete disposal bins will be available at police stations across the state to allow citizens to safely get rid of the weapons without a penalty before the Sept. 1 ban begins.
"Owning, carrying, using, buying, or selling a machete without a valid exemption or approval will be a criminal offense," the Victorian government said in a statement.
The government is running a "Machete Amnesty" period from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30 to support the safe disposal

Baltimore Circuit Judge Yvette M. Bryant rebuffed prosecutors’ calls for a 10-year sentence against Patrick Brice, 28, after he was found guilty of two counts of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment in relation to the May 2023 incident, according to The Baltimore Banner.
