In the wake of anti-ICE protesters and rioters trapping drivers in Los Angeles and other cities in recent days, Republican lawmakers want to make blocking streets a federal crime. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., will seek this week to make it a federal crime to obstruct or create intentional traffic. The "Safe and Open Streets Act" is a direct response to the "radical tactics of anti-ICE protesters who have intentionally blocked roads and highways across the country," Tillis said. Lawbreakers could face fines or up to five years in prison. Under California law, it is a misdemeanor to "willfully and maliciously obstruct the free movement of any person on any street,.."

It should be treated like kidnapping. Persons stuck in a traffic jam caused by this tactic cannot freely move or leave. It is the same as being locked in room. Free speech also means the freedom not to participate in their protest, those who are stuck there are being forced to be there against their will when they are not allowed to leave. Blocking a federal highway should be a felony, just like tampering with mail.

Hwy 101 seems to be the preferred venue in LA but I don't see how impeding traffic on a state highway should be a federal crime. I-5 or the 405, however? Sure.

Not always a fan of more laws but in this case I have no problem with it. And if they don't move I suggest drivers go the way of Florida. Run then over.

I doubt this will pass muster as within the domain of a federal law. However much we might hate the BLM/King tactics being employed, I wish OUR reps would avoid wasting OUR money on posturing against these activities. Pass some federal laws, people - maybe even a REAL budget.

Making a new law does NOT mean it will be ENFORCED. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW only applies to repubs. Dems always say BUT IT IS DIFFERENT when dems do it.

Extremists have been shutting down federal, state and local roadways across the country. They are creating dangerous situations for anyone caught in their illegal "traps." Last I heard, mobs have no right to shut down traffic or commerce, nor is anyone entitled to prevent the flow of traffic with illegal barriers. Don't forget that when people can't travel freely because they're being denied use of the roads we all pay for, that's a deliberate impediment to safe travel, and could easily prevent others from reaching a destination where they intend to exercise their right to peaceful assembly.

Wait until someone with a medical emergency dies because of a highway being blocked. There will be hell to pay.

It's about time. Throw in wearing masks at a public demonstration. That should be illegal, too, with a $10,000 fine.

It's really a shame to have to deal with this federally, but the Dems have proven again and again to be entirely unwilling to do anything to slow down their 'street troops' which they HIRE and PAY to do these crimes for political reasons. So, Dems won't interfere with THEIR PROTESTORS.
Sadly, it seems like federalization is necessary.

If there was ever a argument for the Interstate Commerce clause...
After all, they'll use it to justify anything, and everything else...

Do it. Make it a federal crime to take away the human rights of drivers to be able to reach their destination without fear of being harmed or stopped.

Shutting down traffic restricts commerce, therefore it should be a federal crime.

Anytime there are protesters blocking traffic, send in the tractor trailers and tell them to keep going.

Yes, it's re-election time for lowT Thom. I'm not a supporter of increasing the federal government's power in regard to what is a state matter, but it will probably pass because the Marxist prosecutors in blue jurisdictions are not doing their job. After the DC US Attorney sabotage by lowT Thom, I don't trust his motives.

The criminals who takeover both federal and state highways in California are nearly never pursued or charged in California. The criminal obstructions of federal highways screams out to the need for federal criminal statutes and prosecutions.
