Elon Musk – a man I admire greatly but not unreservedly – used ketamine. It’s not just a rumor. He wrote about it in a series of posts on what was then Twitter.
Ketamine is a manufactured drug that was originally designed as an anesthetic, and is still used for that purpose. However, it was noticed some years ago that in doses much lower than the anesthetic dose, it produces hallucinations. The effect is similar to that of other hallucinogenic drugs like LSD or naturally-occurring psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”).
Ketamine, LSD, psilocybin and many other hallucinogens are thought not to be physically addictive

After Beaton came off the Ketamine, he had this to say: "The doc returned. I told him of my experience. He remarked, 'Oh, maybe I should have warned you about that.'”
Imagine what would have happened if his friend hadn't been there to talk to him while he was hallucinating.

Poor Glen. Life has been throwing him a ton of fast balls lately. It was very bad medical practice that the doctor didn't tell him what to expect. He would not have been so frightened.
Coming into my majority in early '70s Los Angeles, recreational drugs were pervasive. I've smoked my share of marijuana, ingested various "uppers" and "downers", "magic" mushrooms, and LSD - or what was sold as acid. We always had someone who did not indulge. I never did it alone. Knowing what to expect, being in a safe place with friends experiencing the same thing, I had a grand time on my "trips". During this time I earned my B.A. in History, and always held down a job. Its not for everyone, but not everyone turns into a dysfunctional, raving lunatic.

I had ketamine for anesthesia 3 times. The first 2 times were only for a few minutes, but I still remember the bright colors, vivid images and weirdness - but since it wasn't for very long, I was ok with it. The third and hopefully, last time in an ER for broken arm and dislocated elbow (later found broken cup in elbow). The Dr. wanted to try relocating the elbow under ketamine. It took about an hour, with the elbow continuously dislocating. The hallucinations freaked me out, and toward the end I could feel the Dr. manipulating the elbow but it had the sensation of a roller coaster with ups of pain and downs of relief. At some point, I thought I had died, and would be stuck in this weird place forever. When I woke, I vomited and cried uncontrollably. I sure hope I don't ever get it again. People who use this stuff recreationally are nuts.

Same #2. I had a friend in college, in fact we still talk, and we did purple microdot a couple times, and laughter was always our experience. Uncontrollable laughter and everything was funny. I got a new Dr not too long ago and she asked me about drug use. I said I was a teenager in the 70’s. She was clueless as to what that meant. I also started working when I was 14,and got really good grades in high school. There’s a reason they’re called recreational lol. In my 20’s I met my husband and his crowd like cocaine. They were all successful men with various careers and one had a wife who worked in the Mayors office. There’s a reason that’s a rich man’s drug. But come Monday everyone is back at work being productive tax paying citizens. I feel sorry for kids today who just want to catch a buzz and fentanyl has ruined that.

I was given Ketamine one time for a surgery. I felt like I was floating on a river towards what felt like my death But not in a grim way. I kept feeling like something huge and earth shattering was right in my grasp. It was a beautiful dreamlike state, with some beautiful things around me, but when I woke up I have never felt so unsettled and a bit freaked out in my life. I absolutely hated the feeling. It has been 20 years and the feeling it left me with I can still conjure up and remember. I have instructions with all doctors to never give me ketamine again.

I truly cannot grasp why anyone would take these sorts of street drugs that some have mentioned, not talking about Beaton.
I don't even like the feeling of being a little bit drunk, and would never consider psychoactive drugs.
I like the way I am, never understood wanting to go into some altered state. As I said, I shun m booze because I don't like the idea of not being in control of what I do.
Don't mean to look down on those who tried drugs, but frankly, they ALL scare the crap out of me. Never have, never will.
My best pain control drug is the low dose morphine pump. I feel 100% normal, lucid, just kills the pain, no side effects for me
YMMV.
Other pain drugs make me sleepy, or incoherent ......hate them. With the pump it is impossible to get too much. A doc friend told me that patients with the pump typically use much less of the drug than periodically getting shots.
But, if Beaton found it to help him through what sounds like some extremely difficult times, then good for him. Personally, I will avoid ketamine like the plague.

Nos. 3 and 6: same. Was administered Ketamine in the ER to set a triple fracture in my lower leg. Worst experience of my life. I thought I had died and gone to hell. Never again.

My younger son had surgery on his shoulder. They couldn't knock him out, he's a big guy. Finally when the anesthesiologist asked the dr how much Ketamine, the dr said "all of it." Son said he saw his dad, who'd died years ago. He wanted to stay there, wherever it was, but his dad told him no, it wasn't his time yet, he had something to do. Son said at some point he heard nurses yelling 'come back, come back.' He did. The "something to do" was take care of me, his aging mother. He's done it for years. I hate he's in that position but I don't know where I'd be without him. He said he never wants Ketamine again.
