Souter will forever be associated with SCOTUS' Kelo decision. To make matters worse, Souter resigned in 2009, giving Barack Obama his first SCOTUS nomination - the "wise Latina" Sonia Sotomayor, the dumbest justice until Biden foisted Katanji Brown Jackson on the court.

California's beleaguered pot industry was given another piece of bad news Thursday afternoon: The state cannabis tax rate will increase from 15% to 19% on July 1, the highest allowed by state law. A Democratic lawmaker's decision to skip a key vote on Donald Trump's new tariffs has sparked backlash from other Democrats. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse missed the vote to rebuke Trump's global tariffs on Wednesday, which ended in a 49-49 tie, before Vice President JD Vance traveled to Capitol Hill to cast a tiebreaking vote against the resolution. Even if it did pass the Senate, the House wasn't expected to take up the resolution after Republicans passed a rule that specifically blocks this type of resolution until the end of September. The Catholic Church has issued a warning to its clergy in Washington state: Any priest who complies with a new law requiring the reporting of child abuse confessions to authorities will be excommunicated. The new law, which will take effect on July 27, eliminates the long-standing confidentiality of the confessional, forcing Catholic leaders and lawmakers into a highly charged standoff over religious liberty and child protection. Scientists at CERN have turned lead into gold during high-speed experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), achieving a phenomenon once confined to ancient legend. The findings, published by the ALICE collaboration in Physical Review Journals, confirm that gold atoms can form under extreme conditions created during heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. While the transformation is temporary and cannot be harnessed for practical use, it marks a major scientific milestone. For centuries, alchemists have attempted to turn common metals into gold.
