America’s founding documents are selling at the fastest rate since 2004, when market research firm Circana began keeping track, prompting publishers to plan new editions. The rising civic interest is being attributed, at least in part, to the tumultuous state of America’s political affairs. The U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Federalist Papers have sold a combined 162,000 copies this year, Circana noted—and that’s only through mid-April. This is 76% higher than the same period in 2017, President Donald Trump’s first term in office, when these documents sold 92,000 copies, more than twice as many as in 2016. Sales totaled 58,000 over the same period

The U.S. Constitution is a political masterpiece. The ideas of limited government enshrined therein, with its system of checks and balances, its federalist structure, and its Bill of Rights, is responsible for more freedom and prosperity, not just in America but worldwide, than any other document other than the Bible. The Constitution only had two glaring flaws. The first was the reluctant tolerance of slavery, which was eventually corrected by the 13th Amendment (and a civil war). The second was a lack of restraint on the powers of the judiciary. There are mechanisms for the legislative and executive branches to check each other, but nothing with which to check the judiciary

During the UCLA Hamas riots, it was routine for the terrorist supporters to mace and assault Jewish community members and students. And for campus security to refuse to intervene, take down evidence or call the police. The media covered up the situation. And even those who were actually arrested after weeks of this are getting a pass. The City Attorney’s Office received over 300 referrals from arrests made during the mass protests on the campuses of UCLA and USC in April and May, 2024, and declined to file criminal charges on most of the referrals. Three others will be referred to informal prosecutorial proceedings.

Judges lately often exhibit acute cases of TDS. One in Milwaukee was preparing to preside over the trial of an illegal who’d been charged with domestic abuse. In layman’s language, that’s wife beating. Federal agents showed up outside the judge’s courtroom with a warrant to arrest the man, presumably to deport him. The judge stalled the agents for a bit by sending them down the hall, then returned to the courtroom. While the agents were away, she spirited the wife-beating illegal out the side door.
