An alligator attacked and killed a woman who was canoeing with her husband on a central Florida lake Tuesday afternoon, authorities said, after her spouse tried unsuccessfuly to fight off the predator.
The attack occurred near the mouth of Tiger Creek into Lake Kissimmee, south of Orlando, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said. It's near the same location as a March alligator attack in which a woman was bitten on the elbow while kayaking.
At a news conference Wednesday, FWC Maj. Evan Laskowski said the woman was sitting in the bow of a 14-foot canoe when the attack happened. She and her husband were in about 2.5 feet

In our modern age, the electric grid is the mother of all networks. Without electricity, advanced forms of transportation and communications virtually grind to a halt and nearly all digital and electronic devices are rendered practically useless. When the grid goes down, we lose conveniences like air conditioning, lighting, and other amenities that we often take for granted.
Several days ago, Spain, Portugal, and parts of France and Belgium lost power for an extended period of time, demonstrating just how devastating a total grid collapse can be to our modern way of life.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Dozens of residents were urgently evacuated from a 12-story condominium building on Tuesday after construction workers discovered a growing crack in a support column in the building’s parking garage.
What we know:
The incident unfolded quickly as Clearwater Fire & Rescue and Clearwater police officers went door to door, evacuating about 60 people from the South Beach III Condos, located at 1460 Gulf Boulevard. No injuries were reported, and the building has not collapsed, but officials say no one will be allowed back inside until engineers deem it safe.
"This is a very well-managed building," said resident David Zuzman, who was forced to leave with his two children. "I’m shocked."

Michelle Obama says she’s back in therapy as she begins her “transition” to the “next phase” of her life.
I’m not kidding; that’s exactly what People magazine is reporting.
According to the article, during a recent appearance on Jay Shetty’s "On Purpose" podcast, Obama opened up about her current focus on mental health. She revealed that after years in the spotlight — including eight in the White House as first lady — she’s now turning to therapy to help guide her through this personal transition.
“At this phase of my life, I’m in therapy right now because I’m transitioning, you know?” Michelle said, according to the magazine. “I’m 60 years old,

Today the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence released a report on the FBI’s investigation of James (“Tom”) Hodgkinson’s attempt to assassinate the Republican House members’ baseball team. You can read the report here. The Committee excoriates the FBI for mislabeling Hodgkinson’s firing of 70 rounds at Republican Congressmen an instance of “suicide by cop.”
That claim never made any sense. Hodgkinson lived in Illinois, and if his overriding objective had been suicide, he didn’t need to drive to Washington, D.C. They have cops in Illinois. He didn’t need to case out the park

The only thing better than learning from your own mistakes is learning from someone else’s. Unfortunately, today’s urban leaders haven’t been paying attention. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, New York, and other cities could have avoided their current dire conditions if only they had heeded the lessons of Detroit.
In 1950 the Motor City was home to nearly two million people and built half the cars in the world. Today two-thirds of those people are gone and its auto industry is a shell of its former self. After decades of decline, Detroit is on the way back with a new can-do attitude. But its troubled history gives today’s urban leaders

A man and his dog were killed in a suspected black bear attack in rural southwest Florida, prompting a search for the animal and warnings for residents to stay away from the area, state wildlife officials said Monday.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said the deadly encounter occurred near Jerome, in Collier County, east of Naples and just south of the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area.
Authorities have not released the man's name or said exactly when the attack took place.
FWC said preliminary information indicates the man and the dog died in the incident, which happened near the intersection of State Road 29 and U.S. 41.

Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas appeared to hint that college graduates should be ready to “use a chair” as a weapon during a Sunday commencement address.
Crockett gave the advice to seniors graduating from Tougaloo College, a historically black college located in Jackson, Mississippi, during a roughly 20-minute speech posted on her YouTube page, according to WTJV.com. Crockett told the graduates that they should be ready to use the chairs on people who tell them they “don’t belong.” “There are going to be people that tell you that you don’t belong, and I am here to tell you over and over and over that you absolutely belong,” Crockett said.

We regret to inform you that another female cop may have just botched a case, and not just any case, a major one… Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old who’s accused of murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, might walk free, not because he’s innocent, but because a female cop allegedly mishandled the search that led to critical evidence being used against him. According to his lawyers, Mangione’s backpack was illegally searched right after police found him at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. Now they’re demanding that everything inside be tossed from the case. And if a judge agrees,

Dozens of glamorous bikini-wearing women were frantically rescued from a sinking Lamborghini yacht off the coast of Miami Beach.
On Saturday afternoon, about 30 women jammed onto the luxurious vessel - made for just five passengers - for a boozy day in the sun during Formula One weekend.
They flaunted their ritzy excursion online - posting videos of themselves popping champagne and dancing as they laid out on the boat.
But chaos erupted when the $4.5million yacht started rapidly tipping over and sinking, quickly turning the flashy outing into a dire situation.
Footage from the yacht, shared by passenger Lauren Nicole, showed orange life vests being passed around as the women

Wildlife Services, a program within the United States Department of Agriculture, made headlines recently—and not for a good reason. Federal workers employed by the program recently killed a Mexican gray wolf that was wearing a tracker collar and thought to be pregnant.
Wildlife Services called killing the endangered animal a "mistake." However, this isn’t the first time the program has made such a mistake, and it’s far from the worst thing its employees have done to animals. If the Trump administration wants to save animals and taxpayer dollars (and there is early evidence to suggest he is concerned with both), shutting down Wildlife Services should be a priority.

To go armed or not to go armed? That is the question. Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows…OK, enough paraphrased Shakespeare. It’s common knowledge more and more Americans, including Democrats, are becoming first time gun owners. Federal background checks have numbered more than a million per month for more than five years. Since each check can encompass more than one gun, and they don’t account for private transactions, we can be sure Americans are buying more than a million guns every month.
There are signs the pace of gun buying is slowing as one might expect with Donald Trump’s reelection. Americans not worried
