A Vietnam War veteran in Michigan has reportedly received his military honors more than 50 years after he left the U.S. Navy. The awards arrived after a struggle to make records publicly available. Vietnam veteran Karl Smith, who graduated from Muskegon High School in Michigan and enlisted in the Navy when he was 17 years old while still in school, received his service medals Wednesday, according to a report by WZZM 13. Smith, who was deployed to Vietnam and served in the Navy from 1969 to 1973, received five awards: the Navy “E” Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), the Vietnam Service Medal

This is much ado about nothing. This vet could have gotten these medals anytime. Why would he have to “prove” his service? He had a DD-214, didn’t he? All he had to do was contact the Navy or the Veterans Administration. Why would all the records of any ship be “sealed”? This is a dodge used by people who either never served or were separated under less-than-honorable conditions: “oh, it was a secret mission, so all the records are sealed.” Yeah, right. And before anyone takes me to task about dissing a veteran - I was on active duty in the Marine Corps from 1967 to 1971, and I have my own Vietnam Service medal.

I spent all of 1968 on the ground in Vietnam. I never heard of any sort of special event there to award any such service medals to soldiers who served in Vietnam. Usually the only mention of service medals was listed on enlisted members Form DD-214 which showed that they served in Vietnam. We had one Silver Star medal and a bunch of Bronze Star medals w/V awarded to members of my company, but no special ceremonies. It seems like just about all commissioned officers were awarded Bronze Star medal based upon their service in Vietnam.

I think poster #3 has something there...my husband served 5 years in WWII and Korea in the Navy...he had a string of medals and awards...but he also carried something else...the best generation never blew their own horn...they just did the job...so this might have been the case with this soldier/sailor....real men don't need to beat their chests and tell you how wonderful they are...they just ARE wonderful men and America is blessed with them....

"All the Leahy-class ships’ records are still sealed today" why would a complete class of naval warships' records be "sealed"? The story never mentions his rank nor rating. I know guys who served on the Leahy Class Worden and England during Nam and they never mentioned any issues with awards nor their ships' records being sealed I was issued my medals as I earned them and they are listed on my DD-214.

Australian universities are crying foul after the Trump administration asks questions that put $386 million in research grants in jeopardy. The bone of contention was a questionnaire sent to Australian grant recipients asking if the institution had "ties to communist or socialist parties, receive funding from China and it only recognises male and female sexes." The grants were frozen in January, shortly after President Trump was inaugurated, but were unfrozen at some time thereafter. This new round of questions is the second time the universities were queried, but this time, it has their attention.

The deep-red state of Florida has been, for some time, trying to return almost a billion dollars in federal funding to the federal government. Too many ideological strings attached, you see. According to Governor Ron DeSantis, the Biden administration (as should come as a surprise to no one who hasn't been living in a cave for the last four years) wasn't able to figure out how to accept the money back. A quick conversation between Governor DeSantis, Elon Musk, and the DOGE team fixed all that. (X) The X post reads in full:

If you are just, you know, stepping in line the way Republicans generally do behind a candidate that is harming the economy, I mean, you need to listen to the people that put you in office.
