The Trump administration has ordered the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to pause federal funds to the University of Maine System (UMS) over the state’s refusal to protect women’s sports. The UMS holds a network of eight public colleges in Maine—the state’s “largest educational enterprise,” according to the UMS website, with an annual enrollment of nearly 30,000 students. As Breitbart News reported last month, the president signed an executive order to “re-write federal Title IX education rules to withhold federal funds from schools that allow transgender athletes to play as females.”

Tactically, Sen. Schumer is right: Being (justifiably) blamed for a government shutdown wouldn’t help his party. And Democratic strategists like James Carville are also right: There’s nothing to be gained by “winning” the news cycle in the middle of March in an odd-numbered year. I think we all knew this was coming. As Ed pointed out a few hours ago, Schumer had already signaled he was caving by lunchtime today. So this afternoon he made it official in another speech.
"Republican rejection leads us to a decision, and it's not really a decision it's a Hobson's choice," Schumer said. He continued, "Either proceed with the bill before us or risk Donald Trump throwing America into the chaos of a shutdown. This is my view is no choice at all.
"While the CR bill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse."

Elon Musk visited the National Security Agency on Wednesday, according to an agency spokesperson. The initially undisclosed meeting comes roughly a week after the Trump ally said the U.S. intelligence agency needed to be overhauled.
Musk’s visit was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
