A "city-killer" asteroid has a slim chance
to crash into Earth. Here's what to know.

A colossal explosion in the sky, unleashing energy hundreds of times greater than the Hiroshima bomb. A blinding flash nearly as bright as the sun. Shockwaves powerful enough to flatten everything for miles. It may sound apocalyptic, but a newly detected asteroid nearly the size of a football field now has a greater than one percent chance of colliding with Earth in about eight years. Such an impact has the potential for city-level devastation, depending on where it strikes. Scientists aren't panicking yet, but they are watching closely. "At this point, it's 'Let's pay a lot of attention, let's get as many assets as we can observing it,'" Bruce Betts, chief scientist...

A friend asked me if there is any way to aim this thing. I told them it may be possible, check back with me.

Large uninhabited asteroid coming close to earth. Elon has rockets that can travel in space. I think I have an idea what to do with the residents of Gaza. They will have their own land and be in complete charge.

2032? That could be fun. As it gets closer they should be able to predict at least the latitude where it hits. There will be enough time to hop in your car and drive a couple of degrees away.

The asteroid has a 50/50 chance of destroying the earth. Either it does or it doesn't. Besides, if astronomers determine that it will hit the earth, Elon Musk will send a rocket up to knock it off course so it misses the earth.

I can think of certain blue cities we wouldn't miss. If such a city is imperiled, I would encourage all right-thinking, straight-thinking, traditional people to evacuate before disaster strikes, as did Lot and family in Genesis 19.

This is the articles funniest line of all - "If all else fails, the long warning time means authorities could evacuate the impact zone." And how many millions of people could this possibly be? We all know one flat tire on the freeway can back up traffic 10 miles in 5 minutes. Can you imagine if the asteroid was going to impact Los Angeles? Okay, everyone jump in your car and drive to Arizona. Hurry!!

#11 beat me to it. [Hat tip]. #9, if memory serves, we both read some Heinlein in our day. Reportedly so did Elon Musk. I suspect he would tell us that knocking an asteroid of any significant mass off course would require more mass than we could throw into space on a rocket. Being at the bottom of Earth's gravity well makes it hard to defend against this sort of thing.

If you're eager to file your 2022 tax return in January or early February, the IRS has a warning: You'll need to wait for "key documents" before filing in 2023. In a release last week, the IRS urged "early filers" to watch for Form 1099-K, which reports income for third-party payment networks such as Venmo or PayPal. "A little extra caution" could save time and effort, the agency said, because if you don't report 1099-K income, you may owe money and need to file an amended return.

An unclassified document from federal investigators shows forensic findings and analysis of a pair of pipe bombs planted blocks from each other outside the headquarters of the Democratic and Republican parties in Washington, D.C., and discovered by authorities on Jan. 6., the day of the U.S. Capitol riot. Within the task force report, dated Tuesday, investigators wrote the pipe bombs contained “a powdery substance consistent with the oxidizer potassium nitrate, the fuel sulfur, and a fuel consistent with charcoal,” which they described as a “low explosive black powder.”

Living right next to New Rochelle, I was certainly struck when I heard it was the epicenter of Wuhan-virus infection in the United States. More than 100 of our nation’s at least 1,663 cases are in the small city of almost 80,000 people, the result of a congregant inadvertently infecting others at the Young Israel of New Rochelle synagogue earlier this month. That man, a lawyer who works near Grand Central Station in Manhattan, is currently hospitalized.

Rock music isn't dead, but it's barely hanging on. This is true in at least two senses. Though popular music sales in general have plummeted since their peak around the turn of the millennium, certain genres continue to generate commercial excitement: pop, rap, hip-hop, country. But rock — amplified and often distorted electric guitars, bass, drums, melodic if frequently abrasive lead vocals, with songs usually penned exclusively by the members of the band

David Hogg, the new vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), has had enough of Elon Musk’s ceaseless efforts to drain the swamp in Washington, DC, and restore accountability to those who have stewardship of U.S. taxpayer dollars. He took to social media on Friday to decry Musk and point to the man he wants to replace him. Step forward former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. The DNC elected Hogg as vice chair this past weekend, lauding the 24-year-old as “one of the most compelling voices” of his generation.

On Thursday on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said President Donald Trump is not sophisticated enough in terms of the intelligence community to understand what is happening when they comply with his executive orders. Pelosi said, “We are very proud of Hakeem Jeffries, our leader; he has given us guidance on our priorities of what we’re here to fight for, but also how we counter the Trump administration with litigation in the courts, legislation on the floor of the House, as well as communication and mobilization at the grassroots level.

Former USAID Administrator Samantha Power, the architect of the “Responsibility to Protect” doctrine (R2P) traveled to CBS HQ in New York for a late-night television appearance with Stephen Colbert. The purpose of Power’s appearance was to defend the institutional interests of her former agency, as USAID comes under scrutiny for ridiculous spending and manipulation of foreign and domestic politics. Mrs. Power does her very best Sally Stuthers impersonation as she claims the only purpose of USAID is to facilitate charity and life-saving public health in “underserved nations” around the world.

US President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that “billions of dollars have been stolen at USAID and other agencies.” Trump added, “This could be the biggest scandal of them all, perhaps the biggest in history. Democrats can’t hide from this one. Too big, too dirty.” President Trump is referring to the billions of dollars allocated by USAID that never made it to people in need. other resources from USAID made it to NGOs who were organizing the invasion of America.

Big if true, as they say. The Trump administration is considering three potential areas for the absorption of refugee Gazans after President Donald Trump announced that the US plans to take over the Gaza Strip and relocate those currently there to rebuild the area, N12 reported on Wednesday. According to the report, the areas being considered are Morocco, Puntland, and Somaliland. The report noted that what these three countries share in common is a strong need for US support, as Somaliland and Puntland seek international recognition, and Morocco has an ongoing territorial dispute over Western Sahara. Somaliland has been looking for recognition as an independent country.

In a decisive move to cleanse the swamp of bureaucratic resistance, President Donald Trump has officially fired Democrat Ellen Weintraub, the long-standing Commissioner and Chair of the U.S. Federal Election Commission (FEC). Yet, in a display of blatant disrespect for the President’s authority, Weintraub has dug in her heels, refusing to vacate her position, claiming her dismissal is somehow illegal. Weintraub was elected as chair last December 2024. FEC commissioners are appointed to six-year terms by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) suggested the House Oversight Committee consider bringing in therapy dogs to help Democrats cope during a hearing on Wednesday. And wouldn't you know it? Thursday's hearing featured some adorable pups. Not strictly for the reasons one might think. Mr. Crane, during a hearing on 'Rightsizing Government,' noticed that his Democrat colleagues had become a little verklempt over the idea that Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team have been making efforts to slash government waste and fraud. In fact, earlier in the hearing, the resistance party tried to catch GOP lawmakers off guard by calling for a vote to subpoena Musk.
