On an October morning, a small army arrived to evict Rudy Ortega from his home in the Crash Zone, an encampment located near the end of the airport runway in San Jose, California, Silicon Valley’s largest city. As jets roared overhead, garbage trucks and police squad cars encircled Ortega’s hand-built shelter. Heavy machinery operators stood by for the signal to bulldoze Ortega’s camp. As the workers closed in, Ortega grew increasingly upset. “They’re going to have to drag me out of here,” he said.

Just a smidgen of the $24B doled out by Brylcreem since taking office, while homelessness throughout the state has increased by 30% over the same period. There's more money to be made in the homelessness industry than growing and selling pot would ever bring in.

Sorry, but am I supposed to feel sorry for the "unhoused residents"? They have turned their camps into toxic waste dumps and refue any/all services offered them. In most cases, they have alternatives via government agencies or NGOs. They choose to not accept those alternatives due to rules and expectations. They are a blight that I am glad someone will clean up, even at a cost.

Unless we have the courage to acknowledge the reason behind all this homelessness, nothing changes. Their ranks will only increase. Drug use and mental illness are the main reasons people are on the streets. Drug use increases the likelihood of mental illness. It is a vicious cycle. You cannot put toxic chemicals in your body and expect them to have zero effect. Frankly, we have made it too easy to be homeless and drug addicted. We bend over backwards to help people who only want help to facilitate their addiction. History has shown that this is not an effective strategy. The more help we give, the more drug addicted homeless we have. Clearly, this strategy is not working. Until we decide that our citizens deserve better than to live with these filthy encampments in our cities, nothing changes. We have to demand better. While we have let this problem fester and grow, our cities have become rancid and dangerous. This has to stop. Our country is undergoing a horrible transformation thanks to democrat policies. Our cities are a disgusting mess while our citizens are left wanting. We throw away billions on programs that benefit no one but the provider of the services. It’s time to try a different way. It won’t be easy but it must be done. As long as the border is wide open and drugs are flowing like water, nothing changes. We must not allow drug addicts to hide behind the word, homeless. This is a massive problem that democrats have enabled and the rest of us do not deserve to live with the filth and danger that comes with these encampments. We need some tough love and we need it now.

I am not sure how we are supposed to react to this. The people who established these camps should not be here and they know it. But, our current government is enticing them here because someone is making money off what these desperate people are paying the cayotes who bring them to our country. Time to get to the root of the problem and fix it.

Clever idea, using contractors instead of local authorities and police so it doesn't affect your next election. How do these people have rights on land that they do not own and dump all sorts of human garbage on the ground thus creating unhealthy and unsightful conditions? Homelessness is usually not the lack of a home, it is caused by drug abuse and the lack of ambition to do anything useful with your life except to exist from to day. Henry David Thoreau was our first homeless bum but he eventually made his mark by writing about his experiences.

No. 8 absolutely nailed it!! Drugs and access to drugs are the major cause behind homelessness, no matter what any official says! And which came first, the mental illness or the mental illness cause by drugs? Certainly mental illness must be addressed but Cali laws have hamstrung families so much that if, say, a person suffering from schizophrenia doesn’t want to take his meds and prefers to live on the street, self-medicating with street drugs, there is nothing anyone can do. Many of the inhabitants of those encampments by the airport cleaned out in the article ended up in my old neighborhood in South San Jose. Homeless from downtown ended up there too. Yes, let’s clean up downtown and send the homeless to neighborhoods 12 miles away from the city center so they don’t come back! My quiet neighborhood exploded with property crime. A neighbor’s elderly father, out for his customary evening walk, was brutally murdered by a vagrant. Women could no longer safely walk alone in the streets with being approached by strangers and children couldn’t safely walk to school or the park. Bikes, a hot commodity, were regularly stolen. As No. 8 said, you can’t treat the homeless with kindness that enables their addictions. Eliminate the drugs and get hardcore strategies in place to get the homeless off drugs, for their own sakes. Change the laws so that the mentally ill can receive proper care. My old neighborhood had our own local schizophrenic who had family in the neighborhood who could not help him because he refused help and refused his meds. He was not capable of making sound decisions for himself. Shooting up on the side of the road is not a sound or healthy decision. I am glad I moved. I feel badly for my former neighbors who are still there. The nice weather isn’t worth it.

The president called Israel’s defense during the attacks a win — telling Netanyahu Israel’s ability to intercept nearly all of the hundreds of missiles and drones showed its military superiority, a US official told CNN. Biden also made it very clear that the US would not be engaging in any military offensive against the Islamic Republic, the senior official told the channel.

The Labor Department just imposed 300 pages of new regulations to reclassify many individual contractors as payroll employees. CNBC claims this could help freelancers “recover lost wages.” That’s just nonsense. The new rules will make it harder for some freelancers to support a family. It will also make it harder for them to do what they want to do. I know this because I saw what happened in California. Four years ago, unions got Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez to push through a new law that reclassified gig workers. They were told they’d get higher wages, overtime and other benefits. Clueless media liked that. Vox called the law “a big win for workers everywhere.”

While Democrats still lead Republicans in party registration, the margins in these states are much smaller than before.

The current status of the New York civil fraud case that New York Attorney Letitia James filed against Donald Trump, and that resulted in a huge ruling against him, thanks to Judge Arthur Engoron, is just a little bit of a puzzle. In the short term, Trump is on defense, but the wheels of justice should turn and place him on offense. Understanding that requires us to look at the logic of the law, a subject at once fascinating and exacting and, sometimes, very surprising. The role of logic in law is one of the features of the law that most non-lawyers misunderstand.
