The Threat/Promise of Obama’s Movie Imagination

Original Article

Obama’s imprimatur tells us how to comprehend Leave the World Behind. The movie speculates on the end of the world when white advertising executive Clay Sandford (Ethan Hawke), his wife Amanda (Julia Roberts), and their two teenage kids escape Manhattan luxury for a swanky Long Island summer retreat. There, the story develops a political consultant’s test-marketed consensus about the fears of Millennial Americans. The Sandfords react to a cyberattack, plus nature’s revolt, the way pollsters do: Everything is primarily about race.

I saw the movie, and it wasn’t a commentary or an allegory or a consensus. It was a blueprint.

What did the founders do? They committed an act of treason by signing the Declaration of Independence. They recognized at some point you have to take on the established regime when it is not only unjust, but when there is no lawful way to get it back on track. These matters frame our own nation. Texas had just filed its original action in the Supreme Court against Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Michigan -- four swing states whose election officers had clearly violated election law in those states and with an impact that put Biden over the top in all four.

A prominent rabbi at Columbia University took the drastic step Sunday of warning Jewish students to go home and not return to campus because of “extreme antisemitism” at the Ivy League school. The dire directive followed yet another night of virulent anti-Israel protests on campus — which included one protester holding up a sign suggesting that students waving Israeli flags should be the next target of Hamas terrorists.” The events of the last few days, especially last night, have made it clear that Columbia University’s Public Safety and the NYPD cannot guarantee Jewish students’ safety in the face of extreme antisemitism and anarchy,” Rabbi Elie Buechler told students Sunday morning over WhatsApp.
A crush of lawsuits over voting in multiple

As President Joe Biden and Donald Trump step up their campaigning in swing states, a quieter battle is taking place in the shadows of their White House rematch. The Republican National Committee, newly reconstituted under Trump, has filed election-related lawsuits in nearly half the states. Recent lawsuits over voter roll maintenance in Michigan and Nevada are part of a larger strategy targeting various aspects of voting and election administration. It’s not a new strategy. But with recent internal changes at the RNC and added pressure from the former president, the legal maneuvering is expected to play an increasingly significant role for the party as Election Day in November approaches.

On an October morning, a small army arrived to evict Rudy Ortega from his home in the Crash Zone, an encampment located near the end of the airport runway in San Jose, California, Silicon Valley’s largest city. As jets roared overhead, garbage trucks and police squad cars encircled Ortega’s hand-built shelter. Heavy machinery operators stood by for the signal to bulldoze Ortega’s camp. As the workers closed in, Ortega grew increasingly upset. “They’re going to have to drag me out of here,” he said.

President Biden told Israeli Prime Minister that nothing of “value” was hit in Iran’s airborne attack Saturday and asserted American forces will not be participating in any offensive against Iran, according to a report. The president called Israel’s defense during the attacks a win — telling Netanyahu Israel’s ability to intercept nearly all of the hundreds of missiles and drones showed its military superiority, a US official told CNN. Biden also made it very clear that the US would not be engaging in any military offensive against the Islamic Republic, the senior official told the channel.

The Labor Department just imposed 300 pages of new regulations to reclassify many individual contractors as payroll employees. CNBC claims this could help freelancers “recover lost wages.” That’s just nonsense. The new rules will make it harder for some freelancers to support a family. It will also make it harder for them to do what they want to do. I know this because I saw what happened in California. Four years ago, unions got Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez to push through a new law that reclassified gig workers. They were told they’d get higher wages, overtime and other benefits. Clueless media liked that. Vox called the law “a big win for workers everywhere.”

Three crucial battleground states have experienced a drop in Democratic voter registration since late 2020 and ahead of a November rematch with former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, election data shows. Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania — which saw some of the closest presidential elections last cycle — all currently have less registered Democratic voters overall than in late 2020, according to the most recent state records. While Democrats still lead Republicans in party registration, the margins in these states are much smaller than before.

A group of Westchester County residents is in a frantic fight to keep Donald Trump’s name emblazoned on their luxury high-rise — claiming a rigged condo election could foil their bid, The Post has learned. About two dozen tenants at the 40-story, 194-unit Trump Plaza in New Rochelle want the former president’s name to stay on the building even after his management company got the boot but say anti-Trump members of the condo board are trying to fix the system in their favor. “They promised us that they would be an apolitical board, but they’re not.

An attorney for one of the two IRS whistleblowers who alleged a Justice Department cover-up in the tax investigation of Hunter Biden accused Attorney General Merrick Garland Thursday of allowing conflicts of interests that have led to alleged retaliation against his clients — and prosecutors aiding the president’s son in criminal cases. In a letter obtained by The Post, Empower Oversight president Tristan Leavitt demanded Garland “put a stop” to any retaliation against the IRS agents and eliminate conflicts of interest related to cases involving the first son. “On issues related to the whistleblowers, Department attorneys and Hunter Biden’s attorneys are simply not adversarial in these cases,” Leavitt said.

The Biden administration is slated to announce sanctions against the IDF’s Netzah Yehuda battalion for alleged human rights abuses against Palestinians in the West Bank, the Axios news site reported on Saturday. It would be the first time the US has ever taken such a step. The battalion has been at the center of several controversies in the past connected to right-wing extremism and violence against Palestinians, notably including the 2022 death of Omar As’ad, a 78-year-old Palestinian-American who died after being detained, handcuffed, blindfolded, and later abandoned in near-freezing conditions by soldiers of the battalion. The reported US plan drew a scathing response from Israeli officials

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Saturday crushed a putsch by far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Republican rebels — pushing through a $95.3 billion aid package that funds the fight against Russia, the defense of Israel and resistance against China. Lawmakers in a rare bipartisan effort overwhelmingly approved the four-bill package, including one measure providing $60.8 billion for Ukraine. About 80% of that money will go toward replenishing supplies of US-made weapons and ammunition and other direct military assistance. Another $9.5 billion is in the form of a forgivable loan. The bill passed 311-112 with all “nay” votes coming from Republicans, including Greene who was hailed as “Moscow Marjorie” by

We are now roughly six and a half months from election day or election month, depending on your state’s election laws. Today, we’ll focus on Joe Biden’s recent polling surge, as shown in the Real Clear Politics Poll Average of Trump vs Biden. You will note Trump is up over Biden by a whopping 0.4 percentage points. If we remove the possible outlier Rasmussen survey from the average, showing Trump at +8, Joe Biden would be ahead by 0.4. Republicans might be dismayed by this, and Democrats encouraged. In January of this year, Trump was ahead of Biden by +4. Since then, the poll average

True, the mayor had done everything he could to prettify the city, including screening the stockyards with redwood fences,
