The owners and manager of the cargo ship that crashed into a Baltimore bridge last week and sent its metal frame tumbling into the river below have denied responsibility, as they tried to argue that they shouldn’t be held liable for amounts larger than the new value of the damaged vessel.
Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd., the owner of the cargo ship Dali, and Synergy Marine Pte Ltd., the ship’s manager, filed a petition in federal court Monday denying any fault or neglect, according to the Baltimore Banner.
“The [bridge collapse] was not due to any fault, neglect, or want of care on the part of Petitioners, the Vessel,

Pure and simple.

10% of the value of the ship and cargo to Biden ought to get them full immunity.

Well, you gotta give the boat owner, their insurance company, and lawyers credit for their chutzpah.
Best definition of chutzpah I ever heard was where you kill your parents and claim leniency because you are an orphan.

Standard filing, no doubt equivalent to a not-guilty plea. And as #1 points out, maritime law isn't like what you see on Matlock or Perry Mason.

So the bridge just happened to collapse just as the cargo ship sailed under it?
They are taking a page from the Biden administration. Every disaster is someone else's fault.

Good luck with that. Their insurers are going to have to pay out.

According to an early report the ship had lost power on a number of recent occasions. If true that would seem to point to an ongoing issue that was not properly resolved.

...capping lawsuit damages to the value of the vessel...???....good luck on that one..
I'm not siding with the shipowners ...but ...it doesn't matter what Maritime Law actually says ... the U.S. is now a third world country legal-wise....Judges and Prosecutors making up /interpreting /disregarding written laws as it suits them
Foreign Company + Dramatic Video + Dead Americans = HUGE Liability

You can show attitude now but wait until America's glut of bloodthirsty, greedy attorneys get hold of you. They can conjure up crimes from thin air.

Dali’s demands and statements of how much they are willing to pay in lawsuits are both laughable and irrelevant. Maybe they could play the video of Biden stupidly claiming that the taxpayers would bear all the costs. That might shave a few hundred million off,

The amount of their financial responsibility, if any, will be determined at a trial. It could be zero, or it could wipe them out, or something in between. That's why we build court houses. Welcome to America.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about.
It's just a bridge-- in Baltimore, for Heaven's sake!

What do you want to bet that they find that this ship had chronic issues with power loss. There's no way this was a one-off in port incident.
Make 'em pay!

The ship took one look at the bridge and decided to fold. Owners must be commies or Chinese with this audacity.

The insurance company(s) will pay out policy limits fairly quickly. There is no denying who is liable here. After that is exhausted, then the ship owner will be sued every Monday for the next ten years. I doubt they can survive financially.

Looks like Biden moved to quickly support those foreign ship owners and operators when he rushed out and claimed that the Federal taxpayers were going to pay to rebuild the bridge. Biden did not say how many years it will take for the bridge to be rebuilt or that Congress would have to appropriate the Federal money to get that job done. No doubt by his quick move Biden was also attempting to buy as many Maryland votes as possible in the November election.
