Facing a torrent of criticism from conservatives, Senate Republicans on Monday resisted advancing on a bipartisan proposal intended to clamp down on illegal border crossings, signaling a likely defeat in Congress that would leave leaders with no clear path to approve wartime aid for Ukraine.
In a dramatic turnaround, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell recommended to GOP senators in a closed-door meeting that they vote against the first procedural vote Wednesday, according to two people familiar with the meeting who were not authorized to talk publicly about it and spoke anonymously.

I hope they find a way to arm Ukraine, while not doing any more harm to the border mess.

There is obvious misinformation presented in the first sentence of this article. The proposal does NOT clamp down on illegal border crossings. It still allows for 5,000 a day.
I don't see how any Senator can favor this bill when illegal immigration has become the #1 issue for an overwhelming majority of US citizens. They don't even care what we think, and they are obviously not afraid of losing elections.

There already is not enough affordable housing for American citizens. Where are these people going to live? Gymnasiums? Airport hangars? Hockey rinks? It is cruel and inhumane to bring them into the country with no place to live normally.

Schumer has his minions out all around the Senate determining the price tag of each vote.

Unlike so many politicians, I'm more interested in OUR border than I am interested in throwing more billions at that corrupt Ukraine. Why do they insist on ''AMERICA LAST?''

I thought the Senate had already passed it and Schumer was praising the turtle for being so cooperative.

Zelensky, the Universe's Greatest Kick back Artist and the little girl giddiness of our Politicians at the thought of that big payoff is now up in the air? Burisma, at one time, was an exporter of Russian style arms. Do you think the Banderas will man up and head to the front? Militarily, Ukraine is TOAST!

"bipartisan proposal intended to clamp down on illegal border crossings"
Quit reading right there. AP can't even get through the first sentence without lying.

Schumer’s obvious ploy to shift the border problem on to the Republicans will not work. Even the low information voters understand that Biden let this happen. This bill does not stop illegal immigration. It endorses it. Putting some impossible to manage ‘cap’ on illegals after thousands are allowed in daily is an insult to our intelligence and completely unacceptable.

Not one more dollar to Ukraine. I'm tired of going into debt to fund one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

Okay, I got a deal for you.
You can have your aid to Ukraine. For every dollar you give to Ukraine, you give a dollar to Israel, and another dollar for BORDER ENFORCEMENT (Not Immigrant resettlement, amnesty claims, etc.). Oh, and you can add to that a requirement to ENFORCE the laws currently available on the books (less any Biden dictatorial fiats).
I think Ukraine might be a stinkin' black hole for money and my first consideration is to tell the Europeans that they got this one, but I'm willing to compromise.

It's simple.
3 separate bills cover only those 3 items.
However, I don't believe Democrats want to have separate votes as way to protect certain members and provide the bad optics.
Silly Republicans seemed to be more than willing to be fooled by the Democrats once again.
Despite having the upper hand in the negotiations particularly on the border where they Democrats are desperate to find some cover and fool their constituents that they're "doing something".
They also have the upper hand on Israel funding which many Democrats don't want to vote separately on in this election year as it would highlight weak support for Israel.

The politicians can pass another bill supporting Ukraine without involving the US borders and immigration laws.
