This week, the Republican-controlled House will begin contempt proceedings against Hunter Biden with a vote expected as early as this week. That alone will be an historic moment for Congress to declare that the son of a sitting president may have committed a federal felony. However, the costs may not be borne by Hunter alone. If the Democratic members, as expected, unanimously oppose the contempt sanction, the party could fundamentally undermine its position in future investigations. The Democratic leadership has made a series of similar decisions in the last decade that have cost the party dearly by opting for immediate political benefits over long-term interests.

Low on law, high on theater. That’s the best way of looking at Hunter Biden’s Capitol Hill stunt Wednesday morning. The president’s son crashed a public meeting at which the House Oversight Committee was slated to vote on a resolution, based on which the full House would eventually hold him in contempt of Congress — ironically, for defying a subpoena demanding that he show up at the Capitol so the committee could depose him. I say "low on law" because, in the absence of enforcement, law is just a talking point.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday suspended his campaign for president.
"It’s clear to me tonight that there isn’t a path for me to win the nomination. Which is why I’m suspending my campaign tonight for President of the United States," Christie said at a town hall event in Windham, New Hampshire.
Christie, a long shot for the nomination in a race dominated by former President Donald Trump, in recent weeks had faced increased calls from fellow Republicans and from some voters to end his bid to give rival Nikki Haley a boost as she aims to close the gap with Trump.

Elise Stefanik deftly demonstrated how to handle Democrats’ false claims about a Jan. 6, 2021 “insurrection” to justify criminalizing the speech of the half of the country that opposes their policies. At the beginning of “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker’s interview with Stefanik, Welker played a deceptively edited clip from Jan. 6, 2021. On the House floor, Stefanik characterized the events from earlier that day as “tragic” and stated that violent individuals should be “prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” Had NBC honestly portrayed the clip, it would have included the main point of Stefanik’s speech.

Amid allegations from conservative lawmakers and activists that Washington, D.C.’s most powerful agencies have been weaponized against their critics, one organization has not only played a key role in helping marshal evidence of such malfeasance, but found itself at the center of an emerging government targeting scandal that would seem to only further substantiate the claims of administrative state critics.

A German cardinal in the Catholic Church remarked that Pope Benedict would never have approved Pope Francis' recent edict allowing priests to bless people in same-sex relationships.
Cardinal Gerhard Mueller made the comment to Reuters while attending an event marking the one-year anniversary of Pope Benedict's death on Sunday.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has been hospitalized since Jan. 1 for complications following a surgery to treat prostate cancer, officials at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center said Tuesday.
The news of Austin's treatment and condition came after a tortious week during which Austin was hospitalized, but the Pentagon refused to say why. Austin underwent the initial prostate cancer surgery on Dec. 25, during which he was under general anesthesia, according to doctors from Walter Reed.

A US Navy serviceman who admitted to accepting bribes from a Chinese intelligence officer in exchange for sensitive US military information has been sentenced to more than two years in federal prison.
US District Judge R. Gary Klausner on Monday handed down the 27-month prison sentence to Petty Officer Wenheng Zhao, 26, of Monterey Park, Calif.
The Justice Department had sought a sentence of 37 months, arguing that Zhao had obstructed the government’s investigation.
In October, Zhao pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring with a Chinese intelligence officer and one count of receiving a bribe, both felonies.

Police officers are urging Canadians not to publicly share home security footage of porch pirate mail thieves, claiming it could be a violation of their privacy rights and defamatory. President Joe Biden did not learn about Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin‘s cancer diagnosis until this morning, the White House said Tuesday.
Austin’s prostate cancer diagnosis was disclosed publicly Tuesday afternoon, mere hours after the president learned, even though Austin reportedly received the diagnosis himself last month.
“[Biden] was not informed until last Friday that Secretary Austin was in the hospital,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said during the afternoon press briefing. “He was not informed until this morning that the root cause of that hospitalization was prostate cancer.”
Democratic consultant and political commentator James Carville said Tuesday on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360″ that former President Donald Trump will underperform” with voters in Iowa.
Carville said, “Moderates, do they show up? If so, it probably helps Haley. More than 60,000 moved to the Des Moines suburbs since the 2016 race. Right? They’re not all Republicans. But do those that are Republicans show up? What will we see the suburbs around Cedar Falls, around Dubuque? The flip side is across the top up here, across the bottom down here, those are the evangelical rural counties that Ted Cruz beat Donald Trump in 2016. Trump is expected to run it up there.
