Nikki Haley says 'I had black friends
growing up' as she again tries to defend
flubbed answer that slavery wasn't a cause
of the Civil War

Presidential candidate Nikki Haley attempted to clean up her flubbed Civil War comments by mentioning she had 'black friends growing up' following backlash. The 2024 hopeful faced a barrage of criticism and hate comments last month for answering a question at a New Hampshire town hall on what the Civil War was about without once mentioning slavery. She has since walked back her response, saying 'of course' the war was about slavery and suggested that the question was poised by a Democrat 'plant' trying to get the media to attack her.

Someone needs to tell her to just shut up already. It's bad enough she stuck her foot in her mouth, but she now seems determined to gnaw it off.

Slavery was NOT a major cause of the civil war. Look up the Compromise of 1850, which had basically defused the slavery issue which HAD BEEN roiling the waters a lot, but with this series of linked bills, the problem "can" had been "kicked down the road".....NOT solved, of course, but pushed away for a number o years. The main festering problem was the way the high tariffs imposed by Congress on importation of foreign manufactured goods was bleeding the south to support the manufacturers in the north. The south was forced to pay high prices eithe to the uncompetifive northern manufacturers, or pay the tariffs AND the lower prices of the European manucacturers. Either way, the south lost and the north gained. This infuriated the southern folks, basically being forced to subsidize the north BY LAW. THIS was a major driving factor in the war,. And no doubt, the hatred developed over years between the north and the south over slavery was a wedge, it wasn't the 'proximate cause' because that problem had been solved...if only temporarily. Folks who learned their Civil War history in yankee schools only got the "we heroes saved the slaves from those rotten southerner slave owners" part of the story, never the part where the north was bleeding the south to subsidize the government and the northern manufacturers.

2, the actual reason and history wasn't important in that forum. As a politician running for national office she should have known the right answer (in that situation) was "slavery". Wrong time for her to be intellectual and academic about it. Btw, nice summary description of actual events, thanks.

Slavery became the cause celebre on Jan 1,1863, the date of the Emancipation Proclamation; which was given by Lincoln because he was losing the war and used that as a tool to recruit and unite fury against The South. Until that time...see Number 2 poster!

It's absolutely correct that slavery was only one factor in the Civil War. In fact, it wasn't exec the major factor. Mr. Lincoln pulled some early Biden moves when it came to his "enemies". The problem is, Nikki Haley was obviously not prepared to articulate any of that in a clear manner, and ended up looking pretty dumb.

Maybe, but you don't have many black friends now, do you Sweetie? #2 is correct. Politically correct people feel pressured now to proclaim that the country lost hundreds of thousands of soldiers in the gallant effort to free the black folks to prove their wokeness but they were just not that important back then. Saint George Floyd changed all that on the day that he ingested too much Fentanyl and became the accidental martyr..

While learning the real causes of the Civil War is important just to gain the knowledge of American history. The causes of the Civil War has nothing to do with the here and now. It was a gotcha question by the Marxist media to do exactly what it has done. Get Nicki Haley out of the race as a viable presidential candidate. Does anyone really think the MSM would have run any of this if Haley had given a real and educated answer to that question. The fact that the MSM is still harping on this tells us why the question was asked in the first place.

#2, then add the proclamation of the new Republican party which stated there should NOT be slavery allowed in any new territories or states. Was shortly after, is when South Carolina seceded from the States (they also had one of the highest concentrations of enslaved persons at that time). I would highly recommend watching GRANT and LINCOLN which aired on History channel a few years back, and if you're up to it, read The American Lion (Andrew Jackson) by Jon Meacham.

From what I have read, the main reason for the civil war was that the North was strangling the South econiomically. Slavery was a side issue.

Your heart stops. It's your child's voice. Panicked, a family does whatever they're told to secure their loved one's release from an apparent kidnapping, including wiring tens of thousands of dollars, immediately, to a specified account or even dropping a bag of cash on a street corner. Hours or even minutes later, the dust settles and a bemused daughter, on vacation in Mexico or skiing on a remote mountain slope, would check their phone and learn of the chaos.
