FORT DODGE, Iowa–Hours before former President Donald Trump took the stage here, his campaign sent out a text message declaring his intent: "I'm in Iowa today to wrap up the primary." Speaking to a full house of about 3,000 people at the Fort Dodge Senior High School gymnasium on Nov. 18, the former president reminded folks that the Hawkeye State's first-in-nation caucuses were just 58 days away. "All over the world, they're going to be watching this," he said, adding, "We want to make sure we have a big victory."

Several House Republicans called for establishing a new House investigation of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol breach after new security footage was released. Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-Ga.) wrote that the release of the new tapes is "not enough" and that there needs to be a probe for the "lies, deceit, and lives ruined." The lawmaker then called on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to create a new select committee. She criticized the previous Congress's Jan. 6 panel that was chaired by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.).

Republicans on Saturday swept three statewide runoff elections in Louisiana, securing wins in the races for attorney general, secretary of state, and treasurer. The three victories mean that Republicans secured every statewide elected office for the first time since 2015, the year Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards won the first of his two terms in office. Mr. Edwards’ successor is Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, a Republican who won outright in October and avoided a runoff. On Nov. 18, Liz Murrill was elected as attorney general and Nancy Landry was elected as secretary of state, becoming the first women to hold their positions in the state. John Fleming was elected as treasurer.

President Joe Biden met Chinese dictator Xi Jinping for high-level talks in California on Wednesday, marking the first time the two leaders have spoken face-to-face in a year. While specific details of the conversation will assuredly remain under wraps, a White House readout of the discussion indicates that Biden and Xi covered a variety of hot-button issues, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Israel’s defense against Hamas terrorists in the Middle East, and Taiwan. The two leaders also agreed to revive communications between the U.S. and Chinese militaries.

The inevitable occurred last weekend when Pope Francis ousted Bishop Joseph Strickland from his Diocese of Tyler, Texas for reasons not yet provided, after “an exhaustive inquiry into all aspects of the governance and leadership of the diocese” was initiated back in June. (snip)It just so happens that Strickland received the June 24 “apostolic visitation” days after he returned from leading a prayer procession in response to the honoring of a blasphemous, anti-Catholic hate group, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, on the Dodgers’ 10th annual “Pride Night,” a date which coincided with the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Everything happening in/around the courtroom of Judge Engoron in New York City has been ridiculous in the extreme. Even left leaning pundits and political commentators have begun to retreat from the fevered pace of the NY civil case because they can see the appeals court intervening. Earlier today appellate judge David Friedman finally intervened in the insufferable gag order and put some common sense back into the case putting a stay on the lower court order.

Wisconsin and New Hampshire GOPe are very similar to each other. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) released security footage from the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riots to the public on Friday. Johnson took to X, formerly Twitter, and shared a link to a House website containing five pages of videos with roughly 20 videos per page. “Today, I am keeping my promise to the American people and making all the January 6th tapes available to ALL Americans,” Johnson tweeted moments before releasing the CCTV tapes. “To restore America’s trust and faith in their Government we must have transparency. This is another step towards keeping the promises I made when I was elected to be your Speaker,” he wrote in another post.

The process of auto-beatification among the educated in the West seems more prevalent than ever. Possessed, as they believe, of knowledge, wisdom, and generosity, they believe also that they are the conscience of society who therefore ought rightly play a directing role in it. They have what Thomas Sowell, the great American economist and social theorist, calls “the vision of the anointed,” derogation from which would be a sign of moral and intellectual weakness. For them, all desiderata are reconcilable, and the world can be made not only just, but fair. Perhaps not coincidentally, the cost of all this will be borne by others.

A career FBI agent, I was assigned to Paris as the legal attaché, meaning I was the U.S. government’s official liaison with French law enforcement. Later, my private work as a consultant would draw me more deeply into the investigation of the tragedy.

Electric vehicles have been around for 100 years or so. They lost out to gasoline powered cars because gasoline powered cars are better. Is that ever going to change? At the Telegraph, Michael Kelly draws an analogy to the Concorde: The man in the street has failed to embrace BEVs for the same reason he failed to embrace Concorde nearly 50 years ago: the extra cost – of order £10,000 per vehicle – represents an insurmountable barrier. People might pay the extra if they were getting something better in performance terms, but range anxiety and the lack of convenient recharging infrastructure remain formidable hurdles. The once prestigious Lancet medical journal has made the astounding claim the year 2023 saw “the highest global temperatures in over 100,000 years,” even though temperature data collection only began in the 19th century. According to NASA, three of the world’s most complete temperature tracking records, maintained by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Climatic Data Center, and the U.K. Meteorological Office’s Hadley Centre, began in 1880. Although sporadic attempts to measure temperature were made, “there are too few data before 1880 for scientists to estimate average temperatures for the entire planet,” NASA notes.

President Joe Biden’s border chief is now ordering border guards not to presume the correct sex and corresponding pronouns for illegal migrants. “We just obtained [Customs and Border Patrol agency] documents directing personnel to only use woke language when encountering individuals invading the United States,” a tweet from the Oversight Project at the Heritage Foundation reads. The order from border chief Alejandro Mayorkas directs border guards to ignore the biological distinction between the two complementary sexes. Instead, officers must submit to the political claim that each person’s “gender” is more important than their biological sex and so must allow people to sneak across the male/female border under the disguise of “transgender” pronouns.

While the final resolution called for an immediate end to "the brutal Israeli aggression on Gaza" and made offers of humanitarian and financial aid to the Palestinians, not one country came forward with a viable solution, even temporarily, for

Everyone is free to mull some scheme featuring Gavin Newsom riding to the rescue, or the spectacle of Michelle Obama lowered from the rafters at the Chicago convention to accept the anointing of delegates filled with joyful relief.
