During a speech in January, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared that “In our finest hours, California has always been freedom’s force multiplier, protecting liberty from a rising tide of oppression taking root in statehouses, weaknesses masquerading as strength, small men in big offices.” (snip)The most glaring problem with Newsom’s words is that they are self-evidently not so, plus he’s not convincing anyone of anything with his cram-down approach to climate policy. Historically, California has indeed been a place that beckoned people from across the world – a blank slate where people regardless of their background could build a prosperous life.

My assumption is that Mike Johnson (R-LA), who is currently running for the Speakership of the House, will also go down to defeat. Nevertheless, in the interests of being clear about what kind of politicians are unacceptable for the Speakership we should explore his positions. No surprises:

Back when I used to be a teacher at an English all-girls school and the older students were asked what they wanted to do when they left, alongside all the normal answers from the nice girls, a depressing minority of the nasty ones openly answered either “claim welfare benefits” or “be a prostitute.” (snip) before long, it slowly began to emerge that it was actually possible to claim free taxpayer money to skewer floozies with—at least if you were registered as disabled.

The United Auto Workers (UAW) will end its strike against the Big Three as the labor union has reportedly reached a tentative agreement with General Motors (GM). The UAW had, in the last few days, reached similar deals with Ford and Stellantis.
On Monday morning, reports circulated that the UAW had reached a deal with GM. According to details available, the deal mimics many components of the union’s deal with Ford, where base wages will increase 25 percent through April 2028.
