Mark Steyn Goes to Trial

After more than 11 long years, jury selection in Michael Mann’s defamation case against Mark Steyn and others begins on Monday. I had lost track of this case as it wended its tortuous way through the courts, and tried to catch up with it by watching Mark’s deposition, the two short halves of which you can see here and here. The deposition does not lack for entertainment value, but as I watched it, I wondered, how can this terrible case possibly be going to trial? How could Mark Steyn not have gotten summary judgment? You can help put the Mann with the stick in the can by buying Mark Steyn's books. Or even a hockey stick or two(great gifts for the up and coming scholarly Orrs or Gretzkys)...

Mark Steyn is critical of Trudeau. Lawfare is a useful tool to silence critics. A government almost always has more funds than a private citizen. This is why it's taken so long, and why summary judgment was not granted. The goal is to ruin the man.

"whether Mann’s infamous attempt to frighten the ignorant was an honest mistake or a fraud" It took less than 15 minutes of reading the simulator's source code to see the fraud: the "hockey stick" shape is hard-coded into it by ADDING a fake data set having that shape into the temperature data before processing (making that effectively the shape of the zero line or X axis) -- a blatant fraud. The suit against Steyn should have been dismissed almost out of hand...

[that wording was so bad it gives the opposite impression... the hard-coded values are added to the processed set, as in fake-data plus (processed live data), which is actually adding it post processing, not before processing]

mann already lost a similar case against Dr Tim Ball in Canada several years ago. The Canadian court ordered mann to pay Dr Ball's decade of legal fees. While awaiting recompense Dr Ball passed away and, to my knowledge, mann has never paid anything to the Ball family. Steyn published a book a decade ago in which a hundred scientists in different disciplines offerred evidence which which disagreed with mann's hockey stick methods and conclusions. I reckon the taxpayers of the State of PA are paying mann's legal fees.

it appears to me there are very few climate scientists these days who attach their names, titles and institutions to the beliefs of the Democratic Party (those filed under trust the science). Mann does, I think maybe because he is the only one who cannot take his name off this stuff. Nobody else will do it. They say equivocal things that will look fine no matter how it comes out. I wish Steyn could put any one of them under oath but I know he cannot. Maybe however his journalistic friends can try it? To contact the former firebrands and ask them to sign onto the hockey stick, or Greta's weird beliefs, or AOCś. And document that they will not. Anonymously yes, or making their grad students do it yes, or citing the views of others yes, flying under the name of Institutes yes, or those with degrees in the sociology category called "climate science" yes, or other miscellaneous so called science yes, but actual costly personal hard science reputations? I think not.

In Democrat Hell, the process is the punishment. Guilt or innocence have no bearing on the punishment by years of expense, sitting through boring, stupid "legal processes" which are NOT legal, and NOT rational, they are intended as the punishment in and of themselves.

"You gotta run. Because there’s so much at stake," Jill Biden claims she urged her shuffling, addled husband before he undertook his 2020 basement campaign for president. Joe Biden, like the entire country, economy, and everything he touches, has gotten worse every day of his term of office. And it's for this reason that the woman fawned over as a "joy multiplier" is now looked on with suspicion. She's the reason he's one of the worst presidents the United States has ever produced because Mrs. Biden and the Obama holdovers got him there. Americans are beginning to think that Joe's smiling, 72-year-old presidential arm candy didn't have the country's needs

Most news articles about the animal in Lewiston, Maine, who shot 31 people, killing 18, focus specifically on the shooter’s skin color and “AR-15 style” rifle. The media seem to have missed the ten mass shootings that have taken place in the three and a half days since the Maine massacre. FACT-O-RAMA! A mass shooting is defined as four or more people shot, not including the shooter, in a fluid situation. Lewiston stands out because of the unusually high body count. Also, the shooter escaped and was at large for a while before police found his body. Every news source from Maine to New York kept readers glued

Ordinarily presidents enjoy some upward bump in their approval rating when there is a world crisis such as the new war in Israel, but Biden continues to sink despite his high-profile visit to Israel and Oval Office speech. According to the latest Gallup Poll Biden’s approval rating has fallen four points from 41 percent last month to 37 percent now—an all time low in Gallup’s series. (Snip) Most significant is that much of Biden’s decline has occurred among Democrats—an 11-point drop. Gallup’s explanation is significant, because it attributes the decline to something other than Biden’s age: Biden’s immediate and decisive show of support for Israel following the Oct. 7

The good news, such as it is, is that the mask is off the ‘Palestinians’ and it’s also off their supporters. They’re feeling their strength and they’ve stopped pretending that they want anything other than the mass murder of Jews. The pretense of a two-state solution and any kind of coexistence is done. They’ve openly embraced Hamas. At least 800 pro-Palestinian protesters have descended on Union Square following a day-long rally that saw demonstrators climbing the Brooklyn Bridge, damaging cop cars, and blocking traffic. Demonstrators chanted “free Palestine” as they mounted the iconic George Washington statue and plastered it with stickers that read “Zionists are terrorists.” The marchers even erected a makeshift basketball hoop

I’ve been saying for a long time that the transgender takeover of women’s sports is going to end only when women stop competing against them. It makes sense that this retreat from competition is happening in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (“BJJ”), which is a close-contact sport in which women can get hurt, unlike racing. At a recent women’s BJJ competition, men completely dominated the event, with some events having only male competitors. I did BJJ for almost a decade, although I started too late in life ever to be any good, and my joints got damaged before I got my advanced belts. However, I know a lot about the sport.

Being a musician has made me aware of the two major ways that musical tones are ordered in the Western traditions of composition. The more common of the two refers tones to an organizing center or key, in what is called harmony, while the less prevalent of the two, known as counterpoint, lets tones move independently, free of restrictions from a tonal center. This division of approach on how tones should “behave” when they come together is symbolic, I think, of a parallel division in human life. More on that later. The harmony approach compels tones to sound consonant when coming together as melody and accompanying tones, restricting their independence

For my money, it’s none other than His High Holiness the Lightbringer, Barack Obama. Seriously, the dude is irritating. Unfortunately, half the country thinks that he’s the most brilliant man to do brilliant things in the history of brilliance. Anyone who disagrees with that, according to them, is — say it with me — racist. One day, historians may decide that they are tired of embarrassing themselves and critically assess Obama’s legacy as president, which is especially awful when one is discussing foreign policy.

On Friday evening, Harvard President Claudine Gay gave a speech to Harvard Hillel that was adapted in Forward. Gay forthrightly admitted that Harvard has an anti-Semitism problem: Here in the U.S., we are witnessing a surge in anti-Jewish incidents and rhetoric across the nation — and on our own campus. The ancient specter of antisemitism, that persistent and corrosive hatred, has returned with renewed force. A recent ADL report found that incidents of antisemitism had almost tripled over the past six years nationally. Here at Harvard, I’ve heard story after story of Jewish students feeling increasingly uneasy or even threatened on campus.

Instead, Gallant offered Hamas a different deal, which sounds remarkably like Hamas’ true ‘offer’ to the Israelis. “Die or surrender” sums both up nicely, no? This is the same ‘deal’ that Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran have offered Israel for decades. It’s the same deal that the other Arab nations offered between 1947 and roughly 1979, too. For the last sixteen years, Israel has hoped that withdrawal from Gaza might moderate those enemies similarly as Egypt and Jordan moderated
