Two former Directors at the World Health Organization (WHO) have written a scorching article in The Lancet criticizing their former employer for its casual and damaging dismissal of tobacco harm reduction. They are quite right to do so, and it is regrettable that more academics are not doing likewise. Robert Beaglehole (chair of Action on Smoking and Health New Zealand), and Ruth Bonita (University of Auckland), both formerly Directors in the WHO’s efforts to tackle non-communicable diseases, take no prisoners in declaring that “tobacco control is not working for most of the world.”

The rest stay in their jobs, from one administration to the next, protected by rules that make it nearly impossible to discipline or replace them.
Americans have long been critical of politicians and skeptical of the federal government. But today, Americans’ views of politics and elected officials are unrelentingly negative, with little hope of improvement on the horizon.
Majorities say the political process is dominated by special interests, flooded with campaign cash and mired in partisan warfare. Elected officials are widely viewed as self-serving and ineffective.
A comprehensive new Pew Research Center study of the state of the nation’s politics finds no single focal point for the public’s dissatisfaction. There is widespread criticism of the three branches of government, both political parties, as well as political leaders and candidates for office.
With the recent prisoner exchange between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, Americans better be on notice that Iran is once again in the business of taking hostages for ransom. Any U.S. citizen traveling to the Islamic Republic might want to rethink their travel plans. Democrats at every level of government continue to say that getting more work visas will solve the illegal immigration problem in New York.

However much one might sympathise with the protests, they are probably unlikely to shift the situation in a significant way. The protestors, although immensely courageous, are too few, and have little leverage.

Tristan Young took the crown away from four biological females who were in the running.

United Nations, (Reuters) - Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Wednesday he will pump $500 million into the next phase of his energy transition campaign, aiming to shut down "every last" coal plant in the United States and slash gas-fired capacity in half by 2030.
The $500 million infusion into his decade-long Beyond Carbon initiative aims to "finish the job on coal" by working with state and local organizations to force the closure of the roughly 150 coal plants that have not yet retired, slash current gas generation in half and block the construction of new gas-fired plants.
