I love “Community Notes,” Twitter’s crowdsourced fact-checking and context-adding feature that has repeatedly busted politicians in their false or misleading claims. On Thursday, they were at it again, nailing FBI Director Chris Wray, whose agency tweeted Thursday that “The FBI is not and has never been in the business of policing or investigating speech by parents at school board meetings…”Community Notes begs to differ, and they added a little “context” to Wray’s claim:
The FBI’s statement is misleading. On May 18, 2023, former FBI agent Steve Friend testified before the House Judiciary Committee that he and others were directed to surveil and document parents

The Court is through for the year, right? And even when they come back in the Fall, this decision will probably be considered forever and no conclusions till next Spring.....which leaves those little old ladies under a tree outside and gone back to Oregon by Greyhound (and found 5 months later by a FBI and Secret Service that can't find out who stashed coke in the White House) will still be rotting in jail.

FTA: " . . . he and others were directed to surveil and document parents . . . "
The correct English word is "survey" - - not "surveil." I'm tempted to grind my teeth to the bone - - every time I read "surveil" in one of these reports.
"Survey" means "view from above" - - to look over something from a height. "Surveil" doesn't mean anything - - it is not an English word.

One of the incidents used to paint parents as terrorist was the case of a father being shut down when he asked what had been done about his daughter being raped at school. The boy claimed he identified as a girl and gained access to the girl’s locker room with school board approval. The school board claimed that the rape had never happened. This enraged the father who shouted at the school board. They had him physically dragged out of the meeting.
Reporters later found that school board had tried to cover the rape up by transferring the raper to another school where he then raped another girl.
I believe any parent would become enraged if the authorities lied and said the rape had never happened and refused to take corrective action.

Wray has no honesty, or curiosity about wrongdoing within the FBI. Wray has been told, but denies it, and is incapable of any honesty, admission of mistakes, or in his case, intentional wrongdoing. Wray should be fired. He does not have the skills or personality to run the FBI. The FBI needs to get back to law enforcement. Currently, most of the FBI is engaged in political activism.

When police "surveil" a target, they are monitoring or observing behaviors, contacts, online activities, etc. of an individual or group that is under suspicion. They are usually seeking information surreptitiously. That is why learning that law enforcement had some parents attending or speaking at school board meetings under surveillance raised alarm in many parts of middle America. Parents get to speak when they are concerned about what children are being told in school. Parents are especially concerned when schools assist children in going behind their parents' backs with a "school identity" that can include a different name, different clothing and a different gender identity than what is used at home.
A survey is often a research or marketing tool, using prepared questionnaires, interviews or phone calls to gather information about preferences, opinions, experiences , etc. from a sample of the larger population.

#5 is wrong about the word 'surveil', at least according to Merriam-Webster.
In that dictionary it is called a transitive verb meaning: to subject to surveillance.
(I must have too much time on my hands.)
