13-year-olds see largest ever drop in
math scores; reading levels sink to 1975 average

Students aged 13 years old have had a never-before-seen decline in math skills as well as a notable downfall in reading, according to a brand new data assessment from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The Nation’s Report Card’s Long-Term Trend data found that students in 2023 tested in mathematics on par with the average score from 1990, the "largest declines ever recorded" in math, according to the NCES press release. Reading levels for 2023 were just a point above the average in 1971, and came out as the same average (256) scored in 1975.

Comments:

We must massively increase the size of the federal Dept. of Education. We must give massive subsidies to the public schools. We must give massive bonuses to the teachers' unions. That won't raise math scores - - but it will make a lot of communists rich.

This is what happens when everyone is given a participation "trophy" that they cannot read or comprehend. Remember an educated populace is dangerous. They might begin to think for themselves. That's why slaveowners would not allow the slaves any type of education. Nice to know that the black/brown populace is regressing back to their roots that they keep throwing into our faces. Time to celebrate "We can't read, write, speak or do math" month.

As a grandmother of 4 I can tell you…..they are NOT going to read it if it’s not on a screen. Phones and computers are used for gaming and talking to their friends. Books are not exciting to them. They know very little about anything unless it was on a screen or possibly in a movie or TV show. My grands had all kinds of books when they were toddlers but these “graphic novels” or comic books as I call them were awful for their reading scores after third grade.

Numbers for private and religious schools and charter schools are much better. Schools with strong union connections for teachers and staff are abysmal and getting worse. But there are enough students in non-public schools that a core of educated people will continue on. We will need more foreign technical people, sad to say. As matters stand right now, the Democrat party is solely to blame.

Hey!!! I call BS on this. I may have been a juvenile delinquent, but I will put my 1975 math test scores up against anything coming out schools today. If anything all test scores were MUCH higher the farther back we go. NCES sounds like a clown with a laptop and fax hooked into the teachers union office.

Anyone who believes that education is the goal of the modern public school is living under a rock. Progressives have made school the center of everything. There is so little time for real instruction in real information that it boggles the mind. Endless mandates from progressives in local, state, and federal government have gutted reading. Add to that the endless pathologies that students bring into the school - much of which is beyond their control - and education is at the bottom of the list. The favorite term in public schools is “family.” As in, this school community is a family - admin, teachers, staff, and students.

When the pandemic hit, I was working in a library that served the teacher education program. Just one of the faculty was NOT in favor of closing the schools and she predicted that test scores would plummet. She has been proven right. She is almost the only academic I've run into who looked at the whole lockdown of schools with a jaundiced eye. Some of the others in the department are still wearing masks and none of them will admit what a disaster lockdowns were.

Isolation of students during COVID didn't help any. We need to have national testing and if a child cant pass the exam they stay back and redo the class. Go on a semester system where they are held back 6 months rather than a year. China and India among other nations are teaching their children and ours are being eft behind. Also, quit giving admissions to colleges based on letters written, ethnicity and or gender preference but on academic merit.

A leading UK school has banned pupils from addressing staff as “Sir” or “Miss” — calling it a battle against “cultural misogyny” inspired by the principal’s “sage,” Taylor Swift. The US Navy detected an acoustic signature consistent with an implosion on Sunday in the general area where the Titanic-bound submersible was diving when it lost communication with its mother ship, a senior Navy official told CNN. The Navy then immediately relayed that information to the on-scene commanders leading the search effort, and it was used to narrow down the area of the search, the official said. But the sound of the implosion was determined to be “not definitive,” the official said, and the multinational efforts to find the submersible continued as a search and rescue effort. “Any chance of saving a life is worth continuing the mission,” the official said.
