Everyone knows there are budget deficits, except, it seems, the union and the elected officials behind them. The city’s new contract — which gives teachers raises and bonuses of up to 20% and retroactively to 2022 — is particularly rich when taxpaying companies, from local McDonald’s to major corporations such as Morgan Stanley and Meta are making major layoffs.
At a $37.5 billion total budget, the city Department of Education spending per student is higher than any other system in the world, let alone country.
The public-district schools’ per student spending is $36,000, against the per public-charter-school-student cost of $18,000. Once the smaller-class-size law Gov. Hochul signed is implemented,

Nothing news about this. Teachers should never have been allowed to have a Union.

And what are the results at graduation time for the students? Can they read & write, do they know a true history of the world, can they do math in their heads, a smattering interest in science? If they are so far behind what a charter school produces - why continue with public? School vouchers, school choice.

This is criminal behavior with far-reaching damage done to our future citizens when these substandard, under-educated students are let out into the work force. If private industry had performance numbers like this, the business would go bankrupt and be closed down. That's what should happen to most public school systems in this country. No need to wonder why China is kicking American butt across the globe, smarter and better educated people are the primary reason. When America falls into the grave of history, we only have ourselves to blame.

"F" is for fantastic. A fantastic failure, hardly worthy of a raise.

On the other hand, SOME students are unteachable, out of control, and violent.

I cannot wait for New York, California, Illinois, and every other Dem cesspool to run out of OPM (other people's money). Sadly, those who leave don't leave smarter. They bring their voting idiocy with them. Here in Texas, most all the major metroplexes have become stupid.

Teachers make few decisions about what happens in the classroom, except to do nothing, or teach their opinions. The only decisions they make are union related, which is why they are getting raises.

Unionized teachers are PAID to create idiots out of our children so they will vote Dem and undermine American values and culture. It is their way of perpetuating a permanent Democrat underclass.

The only solution - - is a Constitutional amendment prohibiting any government - - federal, state, local - - from owning, operating, or subsidizing a school.
This would be similar to the "establishment" clause in the first amendment. If the government can't establish a religion - - then the government shouldn't be able to establish the pseudo-religion of political indoctrination.
We can dream - - can't we?

Most schools are funded by local property taxes, which means only property owners are paying the costs of the deals worked out by politicians who are supported by the very people they're "negotiating" on behalf of.
If you have high property taxes, you likely have what people will say "good schools".
The rest are essentially very high-paid babysitters like in Baltimore where ZERO students are reading or writing at grade level.
ZERO.

Looks to me like the Democ'RAT-Union-Communist Machine at work.
Years ago (and likely also today the situation in Washington, DC was pretty similar.
As it is a Federal 'enclave', the federal government has authorities there that it does not have in any of the States.
Recognizing that a decent education is necessary to have the graduates be decent young adults as they enter into society, President George W. Bush instituted a policy that any parent who wanted to get their child out of the failed DC schools and into a decent -or perhaps excellent- private school could obtain a voucher to pay for the schooling.
As soon as he came into office, President "Oh" (that is, Zero, who himself went to a series of very exclusive private schools) stopped the program and forced all those aspiring to a decent education back into the failed DC public 'skool' system.
From what I can see, the Tactics have changed, but the Objective of the Democ'RATS..... from the old Southern KKK'ers to todays 'multicultural' Leftists (that is, Communists)..... remains the same...."Keepin' the [Enwords] Down".
Don't believe me?
Look at the results!
