The car was found to be empty after it arrived two weeks later at a rail stop in the Mojave Desert, according to a short incident report from the explosives firm that made the shipment. The company, Dyno Nobel, made the report May 10 to the federal National Response Center, or NRC.

Reminds me of that time in the 50s when 40 tons of sugar was stolen from a boxcar in Los Angeles. The wall of the boxcar had been pulled out. It was near the storm drain system of the Los Angeles River. An FBI man, Robert Graham, and a New Mexico police officer, Police Sgt Ben Peterson, tracked the thieves into the storm drains. Officer Peterson was killed rescuing the hostages, 2 young boys; but the quick thinking of Robert Graham, and a consulting scientist and his daughter- also a scientist - the Doctors Medford, saved the city from the thieves, who threatened to go on a rampage. Them sure were the good old days!

"Explosive" ammonium nitrate is precisely the same thing as fertilizer ammonium nitrate. And the price of fertilizer has increased massively in the last few years since it is made with natural gas. Probably somebody stole it to sell as fertilizer, far more likely than nefarious applications....which actually aren't very easy to do. Can you make it explode? Yes. Is it easy? No.

This is not good at all. Add some diesel fuel to it (a very common explosive mix used in our mining industry) and detonate it with electronic wifi-compatible detonators, you will have major explosions. Time will tell where it gets used. 30 tons (60,000 pounds) is enough to blow up and drop some big buildings. My 43 years in the mining industry tells me this is a mega ruh roh moment. You don't heist this much ammonium nitrate because you just want to fertilize your lawn or farm fields.
